I accidentally hit and maintained 7k rpms for like 2 seconds. I wont get into the reason why hahahaha >.>.
Its a new car too and i felt so bad for fucking up so badly. How much damage did i do in reality? (i dont usually go above 3k/4k rpms daily - no point in lying about it)

For two seconds? One time only? On a warmed up engine? The answer should be none. Unless your car is behaving in some way that makes you suspect that something is wrong, I wouldn't worry about it.

How did you manage to do that when fuel cut-off is at around 6450 rpm?

yeah, all warm.
Part that bothers me though is everyone is telling me that shift limiter kicks in at 6.2 but i was clearly in the 7.1-7.2 range. What gives, am i a real life initial D?

Modern engines are designed to endure that, also you will never be able to reach redline. It stops at about 5800 RPM if your redline is 6000...

Just out of curiosity......What makes you feel that you damaged the engine? Is it making some funny noises or something? Is it not running right now?

I'm curious how you got it above the rev limiter....by any chance, did you downshift into too low of a gear?
was at a red light in 1st, happened as i was attempting to shift to 2nd.

Were you wearing platform boots when you did this? Just curious.

If you didn't then some of your engine parts would be scattered into orbit by now lol
I've done this a couple times with mine too in 1st and 2nd with no problems. Just don't plan on turning this into a habit.

How new is the car? If it has over 1,000 miles and was warmed up, I wouldn't worry too much.

this has hopefully gotta be a joke thread.... cuz this might be one of the most retarded whines I've ever seen, lmao....
"OH NOES!!!! I HIT THE REV LIMITER AND IT BOUNCED OFF IT A FEW TIMES!!!!! MY CAR IS RUINED!!!"
i've bounced off the rev limiter countless times, as have MANY others on this forum, in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and i've tried my damn hardest to get it to do the same in 4th, but the gov kicks in too soon.
Unless you sit there and just sit in your driveway and hold the gas on the floorboard for like 3 straight minutes, odds are, you won't damage anything. Hell, it's suggested to go through a full range of rpms during a break in period to just ensure everything settles in correctly.

+1, this happened to me the other day too, my rev limiter before has stopped me around 6.7k but for some reason i got past 7.2 the other day and it was still on the rise.....

I don't understand why your calling the OP a "retard" (who BTW is only trying to learn to play it safe) when you're over here purposely trying to hit the rev limiter for shits and giggles. Just to remind you, it's not a toy. It's there to help keep you from losing your engine in case you forget to shift in time. You should really think about how bad you're making yourself look before ripping on someone else. .02¢

Yeah know need to go negative on the OP. This is a legitimate question and concern.
A break in period is still a good process to take although it isn't nearly as important as on past cars. Today's cars can take far more abuse and are already built to much tighter tolerances that require little "settling" of engine components. Still, automakers recommend these break in periods that suggests limiting RPM, very high speed, jack rabbit starts, and long sustained speeds.
The OP has every right to wonder if he may have affected long term durability.
That said, I don't think there's anything to worry about from this example especially on a proven to be bullet proof engine. Today's cars are extremely resilient to abuse.
Check out these torture tests for Ford's new EcoBoost engine in the F-150.
And this is with no break in.

I drive a Focus SVT and the hard limit on revs is the oil pump disintegrating at 8000 RPMs, my redline (after an after market tune) is 7600 RPMs. I've bounced off the rev-limiter and there isn't much to worry about. Okay maybe you'll only get 999,750 miles out of your engine instead if the 1,000,000 you were hoping for.
Toyota (despite all the recalls and anti-Toyota rhetoric) builds damn fine engines, I'll bet there's some builders who have no trouble revving their engines to 9,000 for extended periods of time.
Enjoy your car, it will last longer than you'll want it (unlike my SVT)

enigne is likely fine
ive bounced mine off the limiter on several occasions...mainly at a lapping day where there was a section of the track allowed me to go fast enough to top out 2nd, but was too short to be worth the shift to 3rd....
just banged off the limiter for a few seconds before hitting the corner...

Considering Toyota cheaped out on including a tach (even the mazda 2 comes with a small but functional tach), the rev limiter would be a lifesaver for knowing if you went to high before shifting. But the rev limiter is there to save you, so I'm guessing even if you did rev limit it quite ofter, but not every single time, there still wouldn't be any problems. Toyota would lower the rev limiter if it wasn't safe where it's at now.

there's two kinds of over rev, only one of which the car can control
the first is fuel based over rev
the other is a mechanical over rev which can be achieved through poor downshifting

Bingo. Hitting the rev limiter is no problem-the limiter is there to PREVENT over speeding the engine.
A mis-shift is the scary stuff because there is nothing to prevent an over speed condition and the pistons can actually hit valves in extreme cases. This is what would worry me.
My brother has a 94 Civic he drove for 12 years and he used to hold it on the rev limiter just for the heck of it. Now it is strictly a race vehicle and is still seeing the rev limiter! No problems. I wouldn't do it for sport, but hitting the rev limiter is no big deal. Overspeeding the engine is another story!

hi, one question, is there any problem if i switch gearbox to "N" position when i've reached some speed which allows the car go by itself without acelerating? or for example in a downward slope?
thanks!

i am wondering why you would do that, it would be faster to just shift into the next gear

Since you were going from 1st to second, the acceleration momentum could have kept it revving up. Did you notice a drop in acceleration right before you shifted? Im not sure if the limiter cuts fuel, spark or both, but it may have just kicked in. Or was it down hill at all? These little motors can take quite a beating and be fine.
