View Full Version : Is my sedan really ugly? :(

a lot of posts say that sedan is not good looking. I am so sad.:frown: :frown: I got my sedan this Oct because there is no 4 door HB available in US.

I think Toyota is really stupid. Can't them see the large demand for 4-door Yaris Hatchback????

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I love my 3d LB even though people have said things from "what a cute little car " to "where do you keep the engine?", "is it hamster driven?", etc.
What really matters is that I love it and I don't care what people say about it. You shouldn't either!!

I think the sedan harkens heavily to the Corolla whereas the liftback comes of as totally unique, although I see many similarities between the LB's and the Chevy Aveo hatches. However, both cars are gorgeous in their own respects.

I don't think there is a demand for a four door hatch in the US. If 20 people want them, that isn't a demand. Trust me, there are enough people working solely on demographics at Toyota... if there was a huge demand for the four door hatch, we'd have it already. Most people that want four doors also want a trunk I guess. :iono:

Then again, I could be wrong. Who in the US said that they didn't want a tach? :bs:

Don't dwell or worry about whether people like your car or not, sure they shouldn't be mean or rude regardless if they like it or not. As mentioned its important you like it! Don't feel bad, I have an ECHO sedan and that gets waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy more crap then the Yaris sedan would (at least in the U.S.-from what I observed)...but I don't care...I know the ECHO was designed fuction over form and its goofy looking, great! That suites my personality and that I like to be "different." I always get a kick out of seeing another ECHO on the road and going "man is that a goofy looking car but yet so cool! (IMO)" and plus I love my baby, it works for me and that's what matters so the same should go for you! Most people pick a car that suites them, even cars I think are hiddeous.

actually i think the Yaris sedan harkins much more to the new Camry design than the Corolla. the sedan looks like a mini camry in various ways (i.e.-the rounded nose). i'd be surprised if the 2008 corolla doens't take its design cues from the Yaris and Camry. :)

the Yaris in general is still a pretty low volume vehicle in the US, which to me says more about why there was not a 5 door LB offered here more than anything else. its the reason why dealerships kept telling me "we'll sell u one at MSRP. they're hot!" there is a demand for them, bc they're well styled and such, but they'd only be hot, if for instance they had as high a volume as the corollas and had the level of demand they're seeing now. Toyota, much like Honda and its Fit, are testing the market to see what the response will be before ramping up volume and tinkering with different body styles.

looks-wise, i tend to lean towards sedans in general. as noted elsewhere however the Yaris is one of the few hatchbacks i've seen and really been drawn to for its esthetics. i'd have gone for a 5DR if they had them here in the US, but that's no disprespect to the sedan. with a 5DR LB i could have the style that i like in both models, the people moving capability of the sedan, and the utility of the LB. for me it's more about money. i could save money in the short term by getting a 3DR LB, which i do like as well, but that would leave us with a dying 4DR Plymouth Neon to be our passenger friendly vehicle. not good! in any case, i still love the styling of the sedan, even without rims, drops, etc., and am very stoked about picking mine up this month!

The S sedan is pretty hot, but having spent the last 10 years driving a subcompact economy sedan (a '95 Saturn SL1), I really wanted something a bit different and the Yaris sedan -- especailly the CE -- just looked too much like an update of the same sort of car. So for me, it was the Hatch or nothing. I admit, a 4-door hatch would have been slightly preferable, but in practice, I carry stuff a lot more often than I carry multiple passangers, so this is just great.

The Yaris sedan -- in either trim -- is NOT ugly. It's just a bit more normal looking.

I don't think a four-door car of any kind looks good, but that's just me.

The sedan looks like any other car out on the road. The hatchback is really different than anything else on the road right now.

Cute is definitely the most used adjective when people see the car. Even guys say it.

Saying a 4 door hatch wouldn't sell well is crazy. America is 4 door crazy now.
The Dodge Charger has 4 doors and it sells like crazy, the GTO is 2 door and they can't give them away.

I bet a huge percentage of people who bought the hatchback would have opted for the 4 door version if it was available for the same price.

St_G
01-02-2007, 04:08 PM
WHile I agree that the sedan is the more sedate and bland of the two designs, I don't think it's fair to claim that the hatch has no analogues out there. Even setting aside the "a hatch is a hatch" outlook of most american buyers, the Yaris LB's looks can be pretty closely tied to two other vehicles: the VW Golf/Rabbit and the Smart ForTwo.

The sedan looks like any other car out on the road. The hatchback is really different than anything else on the road right now.

I Love the look of my Sedan. The Yaris got the first of Toyota's good looking models to come out for awhile. If you get it lowered with rims, it's one of the most futuristic looking cars on the road.

I'm a proud new owner of a yaris S sedan...and I've gotton nothing but compliments on not only the body style, but the quality of the interior and ride* As long as it makes you happy getting into it every day...it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks...although...I haven't heard anything negative about it! =)

StellarPrincess
01-03-2007, 02:44 AM
haha...yeah...I see that. It would have been nice to have the 2 doors. It would have given it a more sporty look...but the cabin is really roomy (just as big as the corolla) and is nice for toting friends*

An Answer in 3 parts:
1. The people that say the Sedan is ugly are just flat wrong.

2. The demand for the 4 door hatch is irrelevant as car companies have always sold what "they want" rather than what "we want"

3. Finally who gives damn what "others" say? Buy the car YOU like and and roll proudly. I personally think the Sedan (non S) is the best looking of the lot. But that's just my opinion.

At first I wasn't much of a fan of the sedan's styling, but I went with it regardless since I need a 4 door. I have to say it's really grown on me (like a fungus, perhaps) - now I wouldn't have it any other way.

The yaris in sedan form looks good. Don't get me wrong, but I think I prefer the liftback/hatch better (for myself). The Sedan's got some great features, ie. the good trunk space) and I think it's a great looking car.

As for the sedan, I think it's harder to tell it's a Yaris when it's a Sedan though just because it loses some of the Liftback qualities when it's melted into the trunk at the back. It kinda loses the smooth grooves in the door, and the shape of the back, but maybe it kinda gains it's own unique shape too when a trunk is added.

My opinion is, that it starts to look like other sedans, and only when you look closely do you realize it is really a Yaris.

Not saying that it's bad, but if you're looking for something different or unique, maybe the Liftback is one option.

For me, i wanted a sporty car, so i picked 3dr hb, we dont have the 5dr hatch in the US anyway, even if we did, i will still go with the 3dr hatch. personally for me, I think the sedan, wagon, and 5dr hatch are family cars, 2dr coupe and 3dr hatch are usually more sporty looking and because a sports car doesnt need all the extra door, also helps in order to reduce the unneeded weight, as well as the transmisstion on the car, Auto to me are used as family cars, and manuals are for performance, like sports cars, the color too, red, yellow, such as the Ferrari's and some blue are mostly for sports cars ,silver, black, and white are usually for luxury cars, such as the M-Benz. it is just my opinion, for family cars they can be any color, but not red nor yellow, in that case, a family with a sporty color will not be a good combo.Yaris in the north American used to be called ECHO, but then TOYOTA decied to bring the new Yaris to the North America as the same name as known in Europe for many years, which is the Yaris, and in Japan Yaris are called Vitz, the Yaris Sedan in North America is called Bel** in Japan, i dont remember how to spell it. ANy way it really is up to the personal favor when u buy a car.

Toyota branded the previous gen Vitz as the Yaris (like the second gen) all around the world which was a hatch. The Platz sold in Japan was the bases for the previous gen N/A ECHO sedan as well as Oceana (Australia etc.)-although I believe it was badged as a Yaris (the sedan varient) in other countries...the ECHO hatch which was only sold in Canada (as far as N/A goes)was a rebadged Yaris/Vitz-previous gen. Yaris isn't new around the world as far as name goes, just new to N/A as far as name and car itself as we get the second gen like most other places.
Just a heads up!

Oh, the current Yaris sedan is based the Belta in Japan, you were close!!

I've never been a fan of sedans in general. In fact I was always convinced that I would never own a car (my last vechicle was a Chevy s10). When the time came for me to buy something new a small SUV was out of my price range and I've realized that a small pickup is very impractical. Thankfully I saw the 3 door HB and fell in love with it.
After seeing all the sedans on here I'm really starting to love it. The main reasons why I hated sedans was because I felt that they were boring. The more I see the Yaris sedan the more I realize how far from boring it actually is. There have even been a few times that I have wondered why I never bothered to look at the sedan when I was car shopping. However the HB really is the perfect size for me since it's just me, my partner and our jack russell terrier.

look at my car. i think its hot alone with the projector retrofit :) it totally changes the personality from the front when people look at it. Driving on the highway people are leaning over to their driver mirror to see what car it is. Also, some people compliment the way it looks compared to it being stock *headlight that is* It's a matter of preference. I respect the LB community and in my opinion its better styling compared to the civic sedan, versa and the fit.

You kidding me? The sedan is nice IMO. Especially like the front end. Sometimes I try to imagine my LB with the sedan front end and wonder why Toyota didn't use it. Even though it looks great, have to say the LB wins by a nose (no pun intended).

Don't worry about what other people say about your car. You chose it for a good reason and your happy with your choice. That's all that matters. Also don't be afraid to throw a comeback about their cars the next time they snap at you about yours. Bet they won't say anything then, unless you're in good with them and their just joking around.

That looks dope as hell!

Well I must admit stock sedans dont look quite as good as those with the factory S kit. I know its pretty expensive to buy a full body kit and get it painted, but theres plenty of cheaper cosmetics that'll imrpove looks dramatically. Like its been mentioned already, dropping it will make a huge difference. Then add some aftermarket rims and itll look like a whole new car. Adding tints and a rear spoiler will also make it look a lot meaner.

I must admit one of the main factors when buying the sedan was how it looked and my friends and family also prefer the sedan over the lb. I am happy with the choice I made even though I am a minority within the LBs at meets :P.

You should love your sedan, they are so nice when I see them riding down the road, very differnt yet very similar to the LB.

trust me, having a yaris, period, is amazing.

YEAH!!! I think so too.

I sat in a sedan and a LB and I liked sedan better. It just felt more upscale. The handrest, the tachometer, the rear seats are actually useable, vs on the LB it's a joke, IMO. Also the trunk is a good thing. If you carry any smelly items like oil or gas, in a LB it's a hazard and it's gonna smell all over the cabin.

Further more, the 5 door HB doesn't allow the seats to fold completely flat. At least the one I saw at Los Angeles Autoshow last week. And it WAS 60/40 folding seats.

So if I decide to go with the Yaris instead of waiting for the IQ, I will get a white sedan with manual tranny :D.

I'm super happy with my sedan, so much fun twinking here and there, check out the before and after...

From day one it has been a charm, girls love it, "very cute" now it's has been growing up and looks more sportier. It's the "S" model any way! but I still like the LB it's very versatil to carry things around that I can't fit in my sedan. If I buy another car and I can keep my sedan I would buy a LB for sure.

It's amazing what some springs, eyelids, and a grill change can do.

I agree that that RS copy looks slick too. My wife and I don't really care for the Sedan versus the 3/5dr LBs but props to those guys/gals that find a way to make the sedans look good too.

I may have to consider adding a sedan to the line up.

@Derick: Looks great with the drop man, if only some of the roads weren't so bad where i'm at. The majority are clean but there are a few that are on somewhat daily routes of mine that would make me worry. (i might just have to go ahead and drop it anyways)

Sedan, clearly for the win.

Thanks, if you keep the tires you have now, and do a mild drop like I did (NF210s) you will be fine! The gain in performace is awesome and the looks (real life not pictures) it's so much better than stock, go ahead do it, you will love it.

I really like your spoilers! is your sedan an 08 or 09?

I've seen a couple of good looking sedans, but most of the sedans I see just blend in with that sea of sedans (Corollas, Civics, etc.) driving around here.

Oh and the 60/40 seats do fold down flat. Mine looks like this (someone else's pic., but my back seats fold down just like that):

That is what I was talking about the big difference for me between LB and Sedan is the versatility to carrie a big box, tv, etc. NICE!

Do you have to move the front seats foward to acomplish flat down?

IsLNdbOi
11-26-2008, 06:03 PM
Yeah you have to move the front seats forward, but once the back seats are fully down you can slide the front seats back again.

lol sedan>LB imo. Because you can carry five people, and their luggage haha. And it looks special compared to regular sedans too. But then again, I chose LB because it was different. And I wanted the smallest car possible, I live in LA after all.

I could stare at my sedan all day. Sure, it's a "base model" with horrid hubcaps (wrong bolt pattern?!) on it's steel wheels. But, I think it's a work of art. It's definitely fun to drive too! If I had the liftback, I think it would take me a bit longer to warm up to it's looks. The 4 dr. liftback is alright looking but I think the 3 dr. is downright insect like (just my opinion). The sedan has the added convenience of a covered & large cargo space. This would come in handy if I ever decide to join a band and had to haul around expensive stuff like amps & guitars. If I had the liftback all this stuff would be kind of exposed and I'd have less room to utilize.

I've only got good comments about my sedan. Most of my friends have long legs and they love how much leg room the sedan has to offer. They even like the head space cuz some of my friends are super tall. Also the sedan looks very sporty to me no matter what angle you look at it. Don't' listen to what other people say. Be happy with what you got and you'll come to find that even the smallest things of the sedan can be appreciated

WHAT UP 09 SEDAN REPRESENT!!!!!!

with much respect to the LB guys, i like the sedan better. i love hatchbacks they are so cool!, but i have always been the one out of my friends to drive, i guess we always take my car so four doors for me is pretty neccissary. i have became acoustom to haveing the 4door and freak out a little when driving coupes or HBs.

sedans ar super cool man dont be down about it, its just a little harder to get the right exhaust set up is all :)

Almost two yrs later I know...but Sedans are hot. Much respect to the HB crew but they look too girly for ME, the 2012 hatches are however very very nice.

Love the 3DR HB I've had since new ('08)....and when I see a sedan, I figure they have their Yaris for the same reason I have mine - MPG, price, transportation, and common sense!

I got the Sedan over the Hatch for one Reason only, and that is
the seating geometry was more comfortable for me, this was after
several test drives in both on different occasions .
Looks was not really a deciding factor but for a sedan the Yaris looks
really good and for the hatch also, I seriously also considering the Fit
and Matrix at the time I really liked the utility of those but the seating
sucked.
