Um, the first time I changed the oil, I bought an STP oil filter, the one that's supposed to be better than their regular one. I bought it from Advance Auto too. Strange it's not listed in that site. It's been replaced and I have no info on its part number anymore...

Anyway, here's a popular linky for your perusal - http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html

I have read that Purolators are the best for the money. That is what have run in my last two cars, and have had no probs.

I have heard bad things about Frams. One problem i have with them, is when You take the old one off, the damn gasket always seems to stay on.

Baldwin also makes a very good oil filter. B33 for the Yaris.

In my unfortunate ignorance I used Fram's for years in my "domestic" vehicle. Eventually I got tappet noise and tried changing oil/filters more often, tried a high detergent additive, tried a Pennzoil filter (crap, too)--all to no avail. I put a Baldwin on it and the tappet noise went away on my next drive. I'm a believer.

Wix is one of the best from what i have read. Purolator PureONE and Mobil 1 filters are really good as well.

they use good filter media, and have actual metal end caps and valves, where as fram uses plastic/cardboard.

i changed out the breakin oil with Pennzoil Platinum and a mobile 1 filter about 2 weeks ago but have been using m1 filters for about 8 years now. my escorts engine looked new after 90K+ miles.

anyone have air filter numbers. i am in need of that info too. as i am staring down the barrel of a VOLCANIC eruption :eyebulge:

Think I'm going to go with a WIX filter.

Part Number: 51394 You can use the WIX filter for the 2.4L We have a rav4, 2005 and I use the same filter on both. Its a little longer ( 1/4"?) but fits no prob - same specs so no prob there either. I think the last digit of the part # is a 6 instead of a 4. Bigger is better with filters!

The purolator doesnt fit right on my 08 3 dr. It doesnt grab enough threads when you twist it on maybe only 2 which is NOT enough! And I like purolator too. And AC delco Too:frown: You dont want to risk the thing falling off - or stripping threads. Why purolator doesnt fit well:iono:

AC Delco looks different now. The last one I bought looked exactly like the STP oil filter.
Same company may even make filters for AC-Delco and STP, but there's been a redesign on the AC-Delco...different shade of blue, plastic inner tube, etc...

Makes all the Private label stuff. Never found it to be good. LOOKS ok though. Must be the paper media is substandard?? I Have one Supetech in my garage that I pulled off a 2007 Chevy Truck V6 that was having problems. The "OLD STYLE" DELco worked much better. Luckily I found some dusty old boxes of Delco at a locale Auto parts store and scooped 'em up. No Chevy truck anymore though:frown:Just the Yaris:smile:

My first choice is Purolator Pure One http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v631/bigodave/PurolatorPureONEPL30001.jpg

My second choice is Baldwin (Hastings)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v631/bigodave/BaldwinB2-HPG.jpg

My third choice is Wix also branded as NAPA (gold).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v631/bigodave/Napa1515-Wix51515.jpg

Beware of Champion Labs E-Core branded as STP, AC and Super Tech as fiber end caps peel off easy. This design also finishes last in every test I ever saw.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v631/bigodave/STPS8A.jpg

Also Fram has been cost cutting over the years and uses Cardboard end caps. Every filter study I see is weary of this design.

Why would you say that? No car maker builds their own oil filters, right?
Also, I notice the Toyota filters have an O ring vs. the flat rings the aftermarket brands have.Must be for a reason, I've noticed this on dealer Hyundai filters too.
The Thai filters also have some kinda lube on them under the nice plastic wrapper that keeps junk out of the filter. Makes the dealer happy too to see a" Genuine Toyota Part" too.
I've used Purolator PureOne. I like the IROC blue paintjob.....

If you like the Thai filter, you'd probably like the Japanese Nippon/Ultra-8 (Napa Altrom Import line) better. It leaves off the grease, but it has a plastic lid on the end, plus the end plate looks more like the OEM Japanese Toyota filter... :iono:

The PureOne's have a textured yellow finish now, which looks cool, but I just ordered a complete line of Beck/Arnley filters. Decided to switch from the PureOne after trying them once.

Now, I dont like that leaf spring on the purolator. You will be opening that bypass all the time in the winter up north if you car is not garaged. As an engineer I would prefer to see a coil spring or better yet an independant bypass valve assembly

I've used Purolator PureOne. I like the IROC blue paintjob.....:thumbup:The ‘Yota/ Densio Japon o-ring design is great, along with the pre-lube on the o-ring. I had flow, engine noise problems with thwe Thai filter so I spent 9 bucks each on the toyota EOM filter made by Denso in Japan. p/n 90915-1004. The Thailand unit bears NO resemblance to the Thai made Denso. If I didn’t have problems with the Thailand Denso, I would still be using them. I prefer OEM dealer filters they are usually the best, and make the dealer and me "comfortable" during any warranty escapades. Unsure why I had problems with this Thai made filter - most likely the paper in the element was too restrictive. Maybe a bad batch. Had problems with our Yaris and Rav-4, using both yzzf1 and f2; so I decided not to use it. You will know RIGHT away if you got a bad one. The engine will idle weird and have excessive timing chain noise (like and electric chainsaw under oil). OTW you’re good to go with your yzzf2 yota filters

Can they have both?

Looking at a WIX box, a safety by-pass valve assy sits just above the silicone A.D.B. valve, and a steel coil spring on top of the upper metal end cap.

The Thai filter is a good filter, but it sure isn't the OEM Denso filter that came on the car. Just don't understand why I can buy a coffee mug that's made in Japan at the dealership's parts counter, but can't get the Japanese oil filter that was originally installed at the factory. It had better media, o-ring and A.D.B. valve.

Mimelio and !st Nice cut-away pics. You just gotta know in the real cold weather that the thick oil wont go through our 'tiny' filter element and the oil pressure is pushing open that bypass valve on every cold start - so the bypass has to be a robust design. The wix looks good to me but it think the purolator has a bigger filter element area. I want a bigger filter altogether! I'll search the wix database and see what else BIGGER might fit. Oh man, more thai filter bashing. just like GRUMPY used to do.
Funny, Grumpy's wife ALSO had a RAV4. Hmm.....
I doubt a RAV4 died due to the filter the dealer tech installed. That's if you even have/had one.
Thousands of oil changes are done Nationwide every day and so far yours is the only claim I encountered that the mfgs. part they distribute worldwide is the culprit.
Sorry, but I gotta put up the :bs: flag here.
