View Full Version : Anyone Have a trailer hitch on a Yaris??
Suey 1958

I have owned My Yaris for 13 months and love it. I have driven Gas hog SUV'S for many years and dont plan on ever going back. With the suv's I have always been able to tow a trailer and am wondering if anyone on the forum has installed a trailer hitch and done any towing. I OCASIONALLY buy and sell motorcycles and sometimes I have to travel to pick them up. Would the Yaris be up to towing a 800 lb. Harley on a small trailer? I live in the the Spartanburg SC area,...no mountains here .just rolling hills. Thanks, Suey

Several threads exist on towing. Just search trailer.

Had a hitch on my ECHO and towed a 14 foot boat and outboard on it. Maybe 500 pounds? I think a Harley is no problem for your Yaris at least for short distances. U haul makes an outstanding mc trailer by the way and its $10 a day.

A short distance would be fine , but I sure would not take it to the Dragon . Also things could get tricky if there is a rough patch or pothole in a turn considering the high center of gravity of the trailer with load and that there are probably no shocks or power assist brakes on the trailer . ( Most small trailers that I see are straight axle )

I installed a Draw-tite hitch on mine yesterday. There's no way that I would tow anything substantial with it. The hitch more or less bolts up to sheet metal. I'm only using it for a bike rack.

I had one like that a 1980 Subaru Hatchback. I put a metal plate on the inside of the sheetmetal. I used it to tow a 1500lb boat five miles to the boat ramp. The first time the car would not pull the boat out of the water up the ramp! I had to tie a 50 foot rope to the hitch and then to the trailer tounge.
Once I towed that boat 150 miles with that setup. The trailer fishtailed anything above 50 mph. I inspected the mounting inbetween towings. It was fine and I would trust it.

i have a Hidden Hitch ,that's the brand name you can still see it. i pull a 4 foot box trailer and flat tow my dune buggy (about 900 lbs) . pulls fine but give yourself extra stopping distance.
i used Geo Metro's for delivery in my Spacewalk business for years 1.0 motors and 1500 lb cars. the only mishap was when a trailer spring broke. 9 cars and over a million miles of towing.

The lightest, best-made bike rack available = 1Up USA! I have a single tray on my 1-1/4 receiver and you can add up to five! The Yaris should probably only have 2 max. Tongue limit is 70lbs per my 2010 manual on hitches and unadvised towing...

I have one of these on my car. I only use it for a folding bike rack. I don't like the kind that strap onto the back of your car as I kept reading reviews that they can dent the car.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JIC1M8 It's towing capacity far outweighs the capacity of the Yaris AFAIK

Curt, Hidden Hitch, and Draw-tite all look like this when installed.

It's too bad the poster didn't snap a pic without the ball mount in place. Without it, all you see a 1.25 inch black square sitting below the bumper facia.

Hiddenhitch also makes a invisi-hitch one, where it is completely hidden when installed:

It uses a special drawbar:

I installed a 1 1/4 inch receiver on my 3-door Yaris to be able to transport a couple of bikes. I never tried to tow even a small trailer because I could not find a location where I could tap into the rear lights.
Where is the most convenient place to get at the rear wiring?

Purchased from etrailers for 88 bucks + shipping. It's a class 1 hitch but it was easy to install and does its bike carrier duties perfectly. Couldn't be happier with the setup.

Thats a very good price, might have concider this one instead! I want to get a 40"x48" utility trailer set up for towing spare tires and small box for tools and such, just for going to local Auto-Xs and track events.

Heres an idea for us Yaris owners that want to take a few things with us but don't want everything taking up space in the car. This is also a good idea for the weekend Auto-Xer or Track Event junkie, who wants to be able to lock up your stuff at Hotels and some Tracks, I hate to say!!

Here's mine. Much cheaper ($1100.00 CAD) and lighter (260lbs without top,300lbs with top on). Not sure if available in the U.S. though. It is made by Stirling.
http://m.flickr.com/lightbox?id=9627553856http://m.flickr.com/lightbox?id=9627553856I towed a 14' aluminum boat over 100 miles. The Yaris handled it better than a lot of cars and trucks I've towed with in the past. Putting it in the lake was easy too!

No, but for $107 you can buy one and bolt it on in under 30 minutes. The Curt 11050 fits all liftbacks from 2006 through 2014:

According to the service manual, the structural metal of the car is the same for 2012 through 2015, and since the 11050 works for 2nd and 3rd gen, if you could find an equivalent one down there you would be all set.
If you are going to have one custom welded, copying that same style would be the way to go. That one mounts between the two rear tie down points and the end plates are designed to tuck the cross member up under the bumper skin so you only see the receiver and the chain loops.

I don't think it will. The other one mounts to the tow hooks and specifically says that it is compatible with the 3rd generation (2012+) Yaris. This one mounts to the bumper support bracket mounts and only says that it is compatible with the 2nd gen liftbacks. If you select 2012 or newer liftback it points you to the other one.

Well... Next sunday will make a "custom" hitch.
I will use a carrier cargo like this, And i will want to put some led lights red, yellow, White And use this Wiring kit
Or i need to buy a specific Wiring kit
The lights only i will use for my safety And the others drivers
CTScott
10-25-2014, 05:32 PM
That wiring kit is for cars with already combined brake and turn signals. You will either need a trailer wiring converter or, if you use LEDs for your lighting you can just install one set per function and tie them directly to the tail light wires (with an inline connector for being able to disconnect).

First pic the mounting. Second pic is without the ball mount - can't really tell it has a hitch. Third pic is ready to tow
Got the hitch at etrailer for $108.95 http://www.etrailer.com/p-60209.html
UPS ground was $24.92 for shipping.
This is my trailer, http://www.harborfreight.com/870-lb-capacity-40-inch-x-49-inch-heavy-duty-utility-trailer-with-8-inch-wheels-and-tires-42708.html got it on sale for $140, I also welded the corners and the center brace and used different bolts than what came with it. I made the box removable so I can use it as a small flatbed.

My family of 3 have to make an annual 1,600km trek to New Brunswick. 3 years ago I decided I wanted to start making the trip in the Yaris, but needed to facilitate additional storage capacity. Enter the hitch basket.
Here it is in NB with a hockey equipment sized duffel bag secured in the basket. Worked out well, and has for 3 trips so far. You want to be conscious of how much weight is loaded in the basket. The basket weight + gear can easily introduce a fair amount of tongue weight which is sitting quite a distance aft of the rear axle.

Well, I looked at the Jeep forum. Those are pretty fancy trailers. I'm not a rich man so my little trailer was super basic. I used CDX plywood some 2x2 and 1x6 wood for reinforcement. I used wood screws and Liquid Nails heavy duty construction adhesive on the 2x2's. The 1x6's I used for the mounts that go into the trailer - these I used nuts and bolts, I also used some aluminum plate to make them stronger.

I want to add a hitch to my 2009 sedan so I can add a bike rack. Both my mountain bike and my wife's bike have a severely sloped downtube, so I'm looking at both the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver and Lets Go Aero BikeWing-2 2-Bike Rack at ETrailer.
The sales people are super helpful there and advised that I consult my dealer first because the tongue weight shouldn't exceed 70 lbs. And that's in Canada. I'm in state States where I think it's somehow verboten. With 2 bikes and the rack, it probably won't exceed 70lbs by much.
Anyone experience any repercussions? I've searched the forum but couldn't find anything definitive. I have no towing aspirations.

OK, I'll share my 4'x8' Hazard Fraught "super duty" folding trailer.
I put it together last summer, since then have used it for trips to the dump, helping people move, and a few 100+ mile highway trips. Handles fine if you are careful about weight distribution. I really want to enclose for camping.

70lbs tongue weight doesn't sound right, at least not if you're talking about how much weight you can put on the frame behind the rear axle. My 2007 HB can go up to 200lbs of weight on a hitch, so about 150lbs of actual useable cargo if you deduct the weight of the hitch receiver and the rack.
Two bikes plus a rack and a hitch receiver would be at least 100lbs. I've done 1000km drive with four 15" wheels on a cargo carrier no problem on mine, which is roughly 135lbs (34lbs per wheel) plus 35lbs for the carrier and receiver adapter and then the hitch receiver itself, for a total of 200lbs give or take.
I'm in Canada btw, but I drive that setup in the states too.
Now the tongue weight as in a trailer tongue weight is different than load limit. For your application, you're looking at the load limit, which is about 200lbs (at least for the HB).

Weighs 820 lbs with a mattress inside, maybe 50 lbs on the tongue. I installed air helper springs in the rear of the Yaris, which stiffens up the rear suspension so that it doesn't sag. Driven it about 500 miles so far, from interstate highways to dirt forest service roads. The rig has limited power going up hills (like a semi truck), but no stability or braking issues, even at the limits of traction. Still around 28-30 MPG.

I had the same trailer! Bought it used for way too much Money and spent way too much Money repairing it, but it gave me no trouble being towed across Canada. Now I want to buy another one - but brand new. How hard is it to build?
