Switching to synthetic oil after 94,000 km on regular oil?

Is this a wise thing to do ? I just recently purchased a used yaris and not sure if I should bother switching. Im scared the engine might start leaking or something?

Some people swear by full synthetics, other people prefer dino oil. My take is that aslong as you are changing your oil regularly, either is fine.

Oh, whatever you do, just stay away from those Fram oil filters. Those filters are pure garbage. I find that the stock Toyota oil filters to be surprisingly beefy. :eek:

The only benefit synthetic oil has is to improve cold weather starting. We're talking 0 degrees F here. It will not make your engine last any longer or run any better. Its more expensive too although not as much as it used to be. And yes, with the ammount of miles on your car, its very possible you will get oil leaks because its thinner and flows more easily. Not that they would be serious but some people make a living here scaring people about oil leaks. I used to rebuild engines for a living so I know what Im talking about. Change your oil regularly with conventional oil and the engine will outlast the rest of the car easily.

i disagree with bronsin about the leaks. i believe that's an ole wives tale. synthetics are superior because they make your engine run quieter, better mpg, and last longer before breaking down. i use full synthetic and go 10,000 between changes.

just use that cheap supertech synthetic from walmart. that's what that dude uses who has over 410,000 miles on his 07 yaris sedan.

When you shut your car off, synthetics leave a thin coat over the engine internals much longer before draining back down to the pan. This aids in less wear and tear on your starter and battery when starting the car again.

I used synthetic oil in my r90/6 when it had 90,000 miles on regular oil. I was riding it in the winter and had trouble starting it. Starting was improved. It also began leaking oil out rhe cylinder base gaskets. Not a lot but it ruined the look I was after.

In my motorcycle club we had a little contest. Half the bikes had the oil changed with regular and half with synthetic. Then everybody got to try to tell which was which based on perception.

10w30 in synthetic is the same weight as dino in 10w30. It has been proven time and time again that synthetic doesn't break down as fast as dino. I'm not saying your enigne will last longer on synthetic but you can extend your intervals which is nice if you drive alot. All my vehicles have synthetic and none of them leak a drop of oil.
