So I just got home from my parents restaurant in Aberdeen, MD and we have a pretty bad snow storm going on (weve got about 4-5 inches accumulation when we where driving and hours more to go!) the power is flickering and everything...

so after having driven my Yaris all over MD in the worst snow storm in Maryland record without really any problem (February of last year) I was feeling a lil cocky when leaving thinking "oh this is no problem!" .... well it was a problem because I forgot to factor in the 10,000 miles that i have put on my tires in the past year (and the fact that they are completely bald) ... unfortunately i didn't get much further than about 10' before Yoshi wouldn't budge  and we had to leave a man behind!

I know for a fact that the Yaris could've made it home because on the way home in my Moms big 4x4 truck (that wasn't doing all so well) we passed another Bayou Blue pizza delivery Yaris just a trucking around!

Im just sharing and figured that someone would find it helpful to know that tire tread really makes a difference when driving in the winter! lol

Speaking of which whats a good set of all year tires that wont break the bank or my mileage? I did a search on here but all I can find is racing tires

UPDATE: after shoveling out my parents 4x4 truck this morning we commenced operation Save Yoshi! .... with the sun beating down today it really wasn't that hard to get my Yaris out .... because a lot of the snow/slush had melted....

The Goodyear Eagle LS that come on the newer models are MUCH better than the Potenza Slip'N'Slides that came on the 07 and o8 models.
That said, I have snows on The Black Pig this year, and won't go another winter without them.

Set of four Firestone Winterforce snows, about $360 mounted and balanced. Goes like a snowmobile in the fresh winter powder.

@41Magmag41 Yeah but wouldnt those tire be bad in the summer? Another thing that I have to balance is my MPGs because I will be commuting from almost the Deleware border to DC every weekend (about 100 miles)

If it came with the Potenzas , then buy some Goodyear Eagle LS for it - they are as good as any other "all-season" at present.

Moral of the story.. always have two sets of tires/wheels! Hotswapping will essentially net you twice the tire life if you alternate them with seasons

This is what I plan on doing. I'm going to purchase wheels and tires when the tread on my current set gets down. Then I'll have brand new all seasons for winter and can completely wear out my older set in the summer. The wheels pay for themselves because you don't have to pay to mount and balance every season. Plus you can put on/take off yourself so nobody's stripping your lug nuts!

there is no such thing as a good year-round tire

if you own 2 sets of rims/tires you only have to replace tires half as often.

if you live where its consistently below 40F for long periods at a time (like more than a day) you should be using winter tires in the winter months...theyre not just for snow

Have a set of all season on their own rims for the summer. Winterforce just for the winter.

I feel ya all the way dude lol im a student too and im in northern VA, but i got a sweet deal on my rims and tires, id offer you my stock wheels and tires but A were quite a drive away from each other and B i may want them when i re sell the car later on in life...on top of the fact i have no idea where i would set a price XD

i have continental somthins... there pretty sticky tires there not the best and they have a noisy ride but i got my wheel and tires for 1K together, so far they put up with the snow fairly but im a BFG guy.

I think it's clear that two sets is better.

But the OP is also making it pretty clear that he can only afford one set of tires (and wheels) right now, and that his current tires are shot. So what tire would be his best choice, given the reality of his current financial limitation?

Well at this point snow/winter tires. He could run on them until he could afford a new set of tires/wheels.. or he can just run them bald in the summer but the thought of that makes me cringe

This all season tire has some good reviews especially for light snow and wet conditions:

On my Yaris I run the Bridgestones that came with it in the summer and Continental Extreme Winter Contact in the winter. On my wife's Elantra I run Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread in the summer and Bridgestone Blizzak REVOs in the winter. The Elantra is much better in snow but I think it's because of the extra weight. I also have trouble with the Yaris' is traction control on hills. The throttle back can slow you down so much that you can't make the hill and occasionally I have to turn off.
