Ok so I am considering getting a second vehicle here soon enough and Im torn between three options ....

1st: a motorcycle prob a Kawasaki Ninja or the like as my first bike ( always wanted a bike!)
PRO: no Car loans ; cheapest option ; FUN as hell!
CON: Class M license needed (class=$$) ; limited drive time (summer) lol

2nd: a 4x4 vehicle almost definitely a Jeep Wrangler (I've always wanted an older model jeep BC I like the body styling better)

PRO: great for snow in winter!
CON: usually a money pit ; Prob will need another car loan ; Poor gas mileage

3rd: A racing and/or autoX car (2 seater) Toyota MR2, Pontiac Fiero, Honda CRX, Or Honda Del Sol

PRO: Fun ; love 2 seaters
CON: Probably no car loan but more expensive ; will take modding focus away from my Yaris

I'm just curious as to what everyone thinks about these options ... im really on the fence about all of these (constantly searching CL) but my preference changes every night! lol

Thanks in advance for your input! :w00t:

You don't say what you will use it for. Competition? Save wear and tear on your Yaris? Image?

If you need a bulletproof do-all machine, find an old 6-cyl Ford pickup, the uglier the better. On the freeway, you just DARE anyone to hit ya, 'cuz you just don't care. It moves furniture. It works fine in the snow, even as a 2wd. I rode in one that had twind Webers and headers, and it was FAST!

My compromise vehicle (still hunting for a 300" Ford) is a Volvo 245. 210,000 miles just nicely broken in, carries 4x8 sheets on roof racks, 25mpg, 4 people in safety, handles REALLY well. Nothing to look at, and like any other car, has its own character.

What are you looking for, really?

I like your 2nd option. But keep it Toyota and get an FJ

Took my wife out shopping this last Saturday and went to a jeep dealership. (She currently has an 07 Liberty) I was extremely surprised at how much I liked the Jeep Patriot (and I DO NOT like her liberty). $16k for a nicely optioned jeep that gets what I would call nice MPG. We didn't drive one since thats like giving a stalker your phone number and telling him to call whenever he likes. But it "sat" nice. Maybe when we are more serious and better prepared we'll take one for a swim.

Bike = Deathtrap

As a Jeep owner, I'm biased so I'd say go for #2. I have a '97 and it isn't a money pit at all. The only repairs I have done is to have the clutch replaced at about 75k miles and I had to replace some front anti-sway bar connecting arms because the ball joints wore out. Rock solid, TONS of fun. Gas mileage does suck, but that's why I bought the Yaris

My vote is for the 4x4 vehicle. When looking at it from a practical and utilitarian perspective this would really be the only logical choice. You have a small economical car for getting around in and then there's the 4x4 for hauling, driving in unseasonable weather, moving, towing... etc. But I wouldn't get a jeep.

Also don't forget about the maintenance and insurance costs with a bike. And the increased risk of dying whenever you get out on the street with it.

3rd option....go with a honda s2000

It all depends on the kind of car that I get .... if its the 2 seater then I would use it for competition (autoX and Time attacks) As for the bike it would be an image kinda thing ... and the Jeep would be a car to use in bad weather and around town... leaving the Yaris for long hauls.

I considered that but I dont like the way the FJ looks

3rd option....go with a honda s2000

I love the s2000 but idk if ill be able to afford one! aren't they generally a lil bit more pricey?

the only reason a jeep is a money pit is because it's never good enough. once you go wheelin you'll find out you need a winch...bigger tires...stronger axles...higher lift and all that. i had a cherokee, bought it 500 bux, put about 200 into it and got a locker for the front, found a bumper in the junk yard, found tires in the junk yard, put on beefy retro-parts, rebuilt the transfer case, put on a new alternator and battery (after i fried it in the mud)...

and then over the course of 2 years put on thousands of miles in the dirt and mud....and put on 145k miles on the engine. but 31's werent enough, and 4" of lift werent enough. my stock axles were good enough but if i'd gotten bigger tires it wouldnt have been. thing is, the engine went through so much and still had tons of life when i got rid of it. it had 295k on the clock. total i spent on my jeep was about 1200 including cost of the jeep.

Holy Cr@p, Batman! Why, oh why would you buy a Ninja for your first bike? That's like buying a Viper for your first car - just too much power for a newbie.
Start with something smaller, see if you like it once you're broken in (and I use that expression on purpose) and THEN go up to something with more balls.

Kids these days!

I would recommend a Jeep, it's something every American male should own during their life. The Yaris offsets the poor gas mileage (I get 15 MPG with 31" MTs on my LJ automatic)...

Bikes are fun (I've got two)...first, my mid-life crisis bike, a 2005 Honda CBR1000RR Repsol...

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c209/M2Repsol/Motorcycles/9Feb20063.jpg

The second is a 1991 ST1100 I've had since new. This is in Germany in 1995...
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c209/M2Repsol/Motorcycles/ST11002.jpg

...but since I got the Wrangler I find I'd rather go out in it than ride. It's safer, more enjoyable and you can bring friends along and listen to tunes!

As for a dedicated track car, I think you'll need deeper pockets than you think!

Good luck with the decision, toys R fun!

Cheers! M2

Crotch rocket is a term used by senior citizens and Harley riders (basically the same thing) to describe a sportbike, a motorcycle designed for performance and not riding around trying to look like Easy Rider while your "hog" goes "potato, potato, potato, potato..."

You give me too much credit, Max.... I rode a UJM (Universal Japanese Motorcycle - the kind the rest of the world rides to work and back every day) for more than 20 years. "Crotch Rocket" was a generic term for any sportbike - not derogatory at all, more jealousy.

@ jumpmanyaris : yeah if I dont end up buying it myself I'll def let you know. And send pics :)

The only thing that I know to be wrong with it is the drivers side rear bumper is banged in and will def need a new rear bumper .... When I talk to the guy I'm gonna tell him that I want my mechanic to inspect it before I pay anything because Ive bought a car before that ended up being more of a pain in the ass than anything else ....

So even a Suzuki Hayabusa would be referred to as a Ninja? Even though it's not a Ninja? And it's not made by Kawasaki? That's kinda like calling all small, economical cars Fits.

just wondering.

And if crotch rocket is a derogatory term for a sport bike now them I'm officially done with people. I'm 29 years old and wouldn't be caught dead on a Harley but I've always called them crotch rockets.

I would get a truck. A Tundra or Tacoma. Sooner or later you move or need a truck for something the Yaris won't hold.

At least you didn't say rice burner, a term Hardly-Dangerous riders like to use. Unfortunately, the tend to slink away when I point out all the Japanese-made parts on their "American" machines...

2nd option. Something with a little ground clearance for winter.

-5 degrees here this morning with 14" of snow on the ground from a couple of days ago, and drifts nearly 4 feet deep.

I'm thinking Wrangler or Patriot myself.

My 2nd vehicle is a wrangler as well, its the only vehicle I've kept for over 3 years. I've also owned lots of cherokee's before this one and have had no major repairs. The 4.0 is bullet proof and if they do break the parts are so cheap. I average around 16mpg but when I want to take the top off and go out in the woods theres nothing like it.
