View Full Version : Gas prices rising

With all this instability in the arab world i just knew the oil companies would use the situation to raise gas prices.
Fortunately i had the presence of mind to see this coming thanks to the summer of high prices a few years ago and so back in 08 bought the Yaris:biggrin:
Now i get to laugh at all the people who didnt see the writing on the wall and bought big suv's and trucks for nothing more than daily transportation..:biggrin:

Yeah, ain't that the truth. Out here in PR we are paying .80 cents by the liter, I remember when it was .39 cents and yeah a few months back it got up to 1.00 here its all monopoly bro.

Yeah it was 117.7 yesterday here. I'm glad I only need to fill up every couple of weeks.
Oh and if anyone uses Petro-Canada they still have a .05¢/L off cards good for 200L, available for 12,000 Petro Points. It saves me a little over $2 a fillup. And being a student, every dollar helps.

Oil companies have little to do with gas prices.
OPEC speculators basically set the value on a barrel of oil. Oil companies obviously have to sell gas based on what they pay for crude.
The other biggest cost factor is taxes which is why America has among the lowest prices. Those countries that pay $5,$6, even $8/gal are being screwed with outrageous taxes. Has very little to do with oil companies.
Believe it or not, oil companies have only modest profit margins. Much lower than many industries. Their profit sheets look high because of economies of scale.

Last night on ABC World News, they predict that by May this year the average price for a gallon of gas in the US will $5.00 :bs:
I'll just keep driving the FerrYari @ 40 plus miles per gallon and leave my V8 vehicles in the garage.

The bottom line on all this, is that the minute the Oil Companies here that the price of a barrel of oil is going to rise, they jack up prices at the pump. This even though the fuel in their tanks was purchased at the lower cost, we the consumer's take it on the chin before they even have to start paying more per barrel. It really sucks when you know the US has huge oil reserves that the "Enviromentalist" want let us touch!!

This should help the resale value of the YARIS , but will likely put a pinch on the discounts for new or used YARIS . The 2008 YARIS we have only had a discount of $400 if I remember right . This was due to empty lots and people having preorded the YARIS during the last spike of gas prices . Think it was over $4 for 87 at that time .

Here in California, our gas is "special" (just like our people), so that means our gas is formulated to meet extra emission standards. I remember when they first put in MTBE, just to phase it out in less than 10 years after finding out that it gets into ground water.

My search for a '07-'08 Yaris has just intensified, filled the Rav up the other day cost nearly $40. Then my wife calls saying she put $35 in the Tundra and got like half a tank, she's out right now looking for gas under $3.30 a gallon, so she can fill it up all the way. We're paying $3.20 plus a gallon in a State where most people are luck to make $20,000 a year if they can get a job at all!!!

:laughabove: Driving the guzzler around looking for cheap gas??? An internet search would be more cost effective.
Around here they all go up simaltaneously staying within a cent per litre. But, according to our government watchdog there is no price fixing. No communication between brands. Just strange coincidence over and over and over, year after year.

Gas prices here in southcentral Texas have gone up over 20¢ in less than a week. It was about $2.95/gal (US) a few days ago but last night jumped to $3.19/gal (US).
By the way, since we have representation on here from all over the globe, could folks kindly put the location and volume of measurement (liter, US gal, UK gal) along with the currency used? It tends to be a little less confusing that way! :w00t:

I filled up my '98 Rav4 on Tuesday, when gas was $3.15 a gallon, drove by the same station this morning (3 days later) and gas was $3.45 a gallon, all for 87 octane fuel. I live just outside of Wilmington NC, which is a major port city and has giant sea going tanker ships delivering fuel all the time. We are paying out the wazoo for unrest in the Middle East, when we don't even get that much fuel from these areas, it's like 10-15% and prices are still going up. These dirty politicians with their hands in the pockets of the big oil companies, have conspired to kick us in the butts all the way to the bank!!!

It's easy to laugh at truck owners, but in my case it's a fact of life, I have to use my truck. None of my other Toyotas are able to do what my Tundra does, between towing my 14' open trailer with building materials, tractors, and even cars, to my 20'x8.5' enclosed trailer, that hauls my Celica racecar, nothing else will do it. At the current price here, it will cost me nearly $80 to fill my Tundra, and if I baby it I might get 20-22mpg empty, if I have to tow the enclosed trailer with a load, I'd be luck to get 13-15mpg. If my wife hadn't just found a new job after being laid off before Thanksgiving, I'd really be scrambling just fo keep fuel in my fleet!!

The rest of the world has long been paying much higher prices for gasoline. Why we Americans are taking the low prices for granted like spoiled brats?
If one doesn't like to pay so much, they can sell their damn SUV or TRUCK and noone is stopping them. In fact, it's going to be easier to breath to those babies who are suffering asthma due to exhaust pollution from these damn useless SUVs and TRUCKS that are wastefully driven by single drivers, on under inflated tires, to rent a video or buy fast food....

Last spike in gas a relative made fun of how small our new YARIS is and could fit it in the back of their EXPLORER . The twist was they were putting in over $80 a week and had to borrow money on many occasions from another relative whom they never paid back . Won't be long that person will be asking to borrow again . That same person also ran up their credit card on fillups and had to pay high penalties for late payments . Last time we seen that person we asked if they would ever buy a economy car and said no they don't feel safe enough in one like their S.U.V..:bonk:

Just an up date, this morning @ 4:00am here in So Cal = $3.93 for regular.
So by the time I go home tonight I'll bet it jumps another 7 to 10 cents, it usually does.
Does anyone think this will continue for the next 2 to 3 months just in time for summer??
It seems that we are being conditioned, then after 2 to 3 more months of these prices, we'll be happy to see it go down to $3.50 a gallon and there it'll stay for awhile until some other BULLSHIT in the world goes down and start $$$$ increases all over again.
I think instead of giving countries like Egypt a BILLON dollars every year (for what??) I dunno:iono:. We should take that BILLON and give each American family $250,000 (which would be cheaper in the overall longrun) then we could afford to pay for the gas!! I guess I'm just tired of hearing about America always giving othe countries shitloads of your and my $$MONEY$$

Amazing to see the big SUVs and trucks with only one person in vehicle. So they pay a vehicle for the 5% of the time where they might haul something and have multiple people. And these vehicles are also cruising at 5-10 mph above the speed limit.
I really think gas could be $50 a gallon and you would still folks with these vehicles. Must be nice to be rich :)
They're not giving Egypt OUR money-they are borrowing money to give Egypt. We just keep borrowing and borrowing to the tune of almost 14 trillion dollars we are now in debt as a nation. Scary, huh? It's like buying Christmas gifts on credit year after year until finally you're using credit cards to pay the interest on your credit cards.
According to an interview I saw with the highest ranking accountant in the US Gov't it would take EVERY household in the US giving the government 300,000 dollars to come out even.
Ever think about what will happen when our creditors say "No more"?

Ya know I'm really glad I had the foresight to buy something smart and not DUMB for both myself and my wife.
I've got a 2008 and she has a 2009. Both are paid off in little over one year in the money we are saving on gas (saving even more now with gas going up).
I know gas is going up again, but I'm not really concerned.... let it rain!

Gas goes up= Yari trade in value goes up!
I write this as I watch a 2011 Ford F150 commercial featuring the voice of Dennis Leary boasting 22mpg Hwy. Tiny print states that Mpg number is for the scrawny 6cyl 4X2!

I recommend everyone go out and buy some vaseline. Things are about to get painful.
:clap::bow: ^ well said!
And then, we can all pray that no other oil producing country in the Middle East declares a revolution *sigh*
We're past $4.00 / gallon in San Francisco. I forgot to take a picture this morning, for a minute there, when I looked at the pump, I thought I was back in Europe. :(
It sucks, in the UK its £1.29 ltr that's about $2 US

 . Wish more people would think that way . The money saved in gas could help boost the economy . You'd think people would've learned from the last spike and was very likely to occur again , but no :bonk: .

What usually costs around $33 to fill up is now around $45... I was shocked today.

That's about the price we had 2 years ago (2009).
My last fill-up was 6,60$/gallon (1,24€/1,74$/litre). It's gone up by ~1,5% since then (in about a week).
The talk about people in larger cars having a bad time is especially true here. Some years ago, during the peak of the economic boom, (then) well-paid small-time tradesmen would buy slightly used BMW X5s and 7-series and S-class Mercs. Parking lots near building sites used to be filled with black luxury cars. Now many of them have lost their jobs and are finding it difficult to get rid of their Beemers and Mercs in favour or something more... suitable. The ones who have kept theirs have to cut back on repair and maintenance costs to buy fuel...

It's funny, anytime gas prices rise as dramatically as they have; I get more and more people asking me about my Yaris! Just this morning I had the gate guard at the base I work at ask me what kind of mileage I got.
I've also noticed that people are driving a lot slower to conserve fuel. I am experiencing less SUVs and pick-ups whizzing by me. Maybe this increase is not so bad after all...

Gas and distillate inventories are down . Gas is down 5.5 million barrels and distillate ( diesel , home heating oil ) down by 4 million barrels . This means gas / home heating costs will rise . Don't forget this is the time of the year when they switch over to the summer blend of gas which slows down production and usually has an impact on gas prices too . So , likely to see more of an increase at the pump :frown: .

What exactly is changed between summer/winter blends? I hear everyone always saying that ... but I've never actually asked what they do differently ...

Just as a friendly reminder. Buying a car to save on gas is NOT saving on gas UNLESS you purchase a straight line trade on the debt you owe on a car. Dave Ramsey says it best (copied right from his website) - http://www.daveramsey.com/article/dave-ramseys-thoughts-on-hybrid-cars/lifeandmoney_automobiles/text1/
Let's say you currently drive a vehicle worth $10,000 that gets 15 miles/gallon. There's this $25,000 car you're thinking about buying that gets 25 miles/gallon. That's a $15,000 price difference just to get 10 more miles a gallon. If you drive 100 miles a week, that's about a $10 difference a week.
So that would be about $40 extra you're spending a month in gas if you stuck with the current car. A monthly car payment is much more than that! To get your money back at current gas prices, it would take you almost 29 years to save $15,000 in gasoline!
The math doesn't work! You'd have to drive to the moon and back to make it worth it!
Now granted... my wife went from a 22mpg car to a 40+ mpg car but the concept is still the same. We SAVED money going to the yaris and kept the same monthly payment. We just ended up taking the money that we DIDN'T spend on gas and put it towards the car

While on the subject of low-cost motoring, the Yaris has some of the lowest maintenance costs. The repairs, insurance... it all adds up.

Exactly! It is an inexpensive car that gets great gas mileage and has very low maintenance costs. I don't need Dave Ramsey to do the math, I know the Yaris is a very economical vehicle to own and operate! :w00t:
It's just gravy that it's a blast to drive as well! :headbang:

Thanks. I always thought the added summer cost was more due to added demand which it still is in part. Just didn't realize the summer blend cost more to produce.
