Last I heard, Wink mirrors were illegal in most states, usually for the reason mentioned above. People get so engrossed in what is happening behind them that they lose track of what is ahead!

At one time, it seems to me that they had a warning on them, "For track use only", taking the item back to its roots, the track.

I can't find the reference in CA law that would make it illegal. Can you share your source, please?

I'm not taking it off, either way; the increased visibility is good for someone that won't get distracted.

the visors need to be removed, and small holes are drilled in the the sheet metal that houses the clip holdings for the visors.... most car's visors are held in by screws (im guessing?) but the yaris' visors are held in by clips, lol.
drilling is non damaging and visors can be replaced. I have seen modifications to the wink mirror to hide it behind the visors but I wouldnt think this would work with the yaris as you'd have to place them back so far that they would start to intrude on visualization of the road ahead of you.

As soon as I find my cam I'll take a good pic of mounting.

oh and I hope they arnt illegal cause I would presume they would be better..... maybe a little distractive, who wouldnt love the panoramic view? :D

If you mount the Wink onto the glass at the top of the windshield (they have a kit for that), you can keep the visors, and use them if needed. You also don't have to drill anything. I did not do it that way, though.

I would think you'd get a lot of vibration in the mirror if you had one mount point....

Sorry, I don't have documentation on the legality of Wink mirrors. I'm not even sure it was strictly the Motor Vehicles guys, it may have been the insurance leeches. Besides, my memories of Wink mirrors go back to the beginning, two generations ago. Let us know what you find out...

The glass kit allows you to mount it on the glass with two attachment points.

that might be something he has wedged in between the mirror and headliner to stop some of the mirror vibration....

I used a dremel to cut the visor off the plastic mount. Then kept shaving away the plastic mount until the "L" bracket fit in it. It turned out nice. Very oem looking compared to seeing the sheetmetal.

I've been studying the headliner mounting in the service manual. Is it really so strong and rigid that things such as the grab handle (and your wink mirror) can be mounted to it without being anchored into the roof structure? I was thinking of mounting my GPS to the headliner and taking power from the driver side "personal light".

PK, it's a series of fixed, flat mirrors that give a wide field of view. I can even see out my front windows with it. Really helps eliminate the blind spot when you get used to it.

Yaristeve, no, all of those accessories clip/mount into metal underneath the headliner.

On my civic I first used the glue on windshield mounts. They work alright. It uses a silicone based glue. It's a nightmare attaching them and making sure everything lines up. If you hit a bump hard enough, like most railroads, it flops down and you are looking at your lap. If you hit a really big bump it falls off. Use the visor way to install. Much more rigid and you don't get nearly as much vibration in it.

All of the panels are tinted so it's not too bad. If you've ever driven a car with an automatic dimming rear view mirror, it is almost as dark as that but all of the time.

1 Completly remove your visors.
2.Use a dremel to cut off the visor mounts
3.Use a dremel to cut a slot for the wink brackets
4. Install the bracket onto your car (pain in the butt, because you have to press them in fully put together)
5. Install wink mirror onto brackets
Yes you ruin your stock visors, yes the brackets will probably never come out again with out totaly ruining them. But you will need to buy new visors to replace them anyways. I didn't use an screws or glue for attaching the brackets. The fit is so tight you don't need them. My mirror doesn't move at all. I have no pictures of the install.

If you want to get out on the cheap, the CIPA model 34000 is what I use in my track car, it's 12" wide with a panoramic view. Here is the link from Summit Racing, http://www.summitracing.com/search/Part-Type/Rearview-Mirror/?Keyword=cipa+mirrors Clips onto stock mirror and gives almost a 180 view of whats behind you!!

i got one today and installed it.. was kind of a bitch! I did it to where I could keep the visors with somewhat usability by sending a bolt through the headliner in to an existing hole in the frame by the visor mounts. I really screwed up my passenger side visor mount though.. oh well. ill post pics tomorrow :P

Sorry for resurrecting this thread from the dead.

I was just sitting here and it just hit me (even though I submitted a reply earlier): for some reason, it has taken me 5 years to realize that the Yaris, with its very open design is an ideal candidate for a Wink mirror. I have one in my 1979 Celica (similar open greenhouse design) and love it.

I guess this is my next mini-project...

I had a 4 panel clip-on Wink in my Volvo 240's. Loved it. But, I sold it off as it did not fit the Yaris and I don't want to do away with my visors. It sure is tough going back to a standard mirror after having a Wink. You feel like you're looking through a peep hole. I do, though, use a panoramic style mirror similar to the CIPA referenced above. The more you can see out the back and sides the better IMO.
