i remember seeing yaris previews in the movie theatres way back early in 2006. the commercials had a cool vibe to them. kind of weird but cool at the same time. i remember the piggy bank one the best. i think that is probably one of the reasons why i bought a yaris.
what about the rest of you?

After test driving the Versa, Accent, xA and the Mazda3 it came down to style, price and fit. I really liked the way I fit in the Yaris and I thought that the style was really great. It was between the xA and the Yaris - the Yaris was just right for me.

I liked the look, mileage, electric power steerin, ride height, seats, interior design... etc etc :)
The overall "feel" of the car was there, came together, I liked it, its cheap, I bought it!

I grew up lamenting over the mid 90's Civic hatches. I wanted to grab one while I was young so I could play with it. I was always fascinated with the fact that people bought these cars for 5 grand used and another 5 grand later they had something that was decently quick and amazingly unique. No two tuner cars have to be the same... if they are, its your own damn fault.
I was in the market in June as I had a feeling my STS was on its way out. I went to the dealership looking for a second-gen Celica, and they told me about a little car called the Yaris. It reminded me of the Civic hatches, and I liked the fact that it was rivaling the Fit, which was to be the only tuner-ready ride coming from the segment. I love rooting for the underdog.
I told them I wanted a black manual with every goodie in the world. They told me I could get the first liftback in Ohio if I would settle for a bone-stock silver liftback. I told them as long as it had the TRD suspension off the lot I was in.
Low and behold she sits in my driveway today, and I'm always doing something to her. I'm proud to say I own it.

I was getting increasingly tired of my old A/T Chevy Prizm, and when I mentioned a friend I wated to change cars, he mentioned a new car Toyota was going to be releasing. So after some research, I loved the looks, size, and engine of the LB; and after a trip to the delearship (only to drive a Sedan :( ), I placed my order for a PQ Blazing Blue MT LB. Almost 4 months later I found myself driving a Meteorite MT with the PQ... And Loving it!!
Same as Charles, I am proud of owning a Yaris. After 6 months of ownership I still get a buzz every time I drive it!:burnrubber:

Nice looking, good body style, good on Gas, lots of aftermarket parts for it, top seller in its class for years in Europe and Aisa, Euro looking, small, easy and fun to drive, lots of cargo space in the hatch back model and still carries five passangers, also provide choices of sports colors, some cars doesnt, like the Xa and Tc, they dont come with RED. JUST LOVING IT:laugh: oh yea and i love TOYOTA that never breaks down on u

Originally wanted a second hand sports car like an Impreza, but for my budget that would mean a 10 year old car.
So I looked at cheap, cool, small new cars with lots of modding potential. There's the Fit, but you see thousands of them on the road and the styling is getting old. There's the Aveo, but let's face it, it's crap. There's the Versa, but too big for my taste. That pretty much left the Yaris, to be honest I did not quite like it at first, but it really grew on me
I'm more than happy with this decision, the Yaris is pretty much everything I need it to be. I never really considered mileage in the first place, so that's a bonus!

Like Tekmoe, I saw the commercials and was fascinated by this little car. Started haunting the Toyota website until I knew everything there was to know about the Yaris, picked my options then started talking about it to everybody, all the time. Hubby finally said "if you want it that bad, just go get it". Love my meteorite metallic liftback. Most fun I've had on wheels in years!

Well for one. I didnt want a yaris. I wanted a WRX. But credit is eveyrthing especialy with a low down payment. I needed a car asap. Somewhere neer the $10k range or below. I was looking into the Honda Fit or the Toyota Yaris. The Fit has a kick ass interior. But the guy wanted to sale it to me for $16K. I told him to shuve that price up his ass and ill go to toyota across the St. Which I did. But mostly because my 240 was giving me shit with tires and alignment with a every sunday touge run. So I needed something to calm my butt down.

I had heard that Toyota was making a small car similar to the old Ford Fiesta. I had a Fiesta and that little sucker was awesome. I went to a dealership and test drove a Yaris which was amazing because they were so rare and this dealership had 2 of them. One new and one used. They were selling the used one for more than the new. The salesman was a prick but I got to testdrive the Yaris and it was love at first drive! I loved the interior and exterior, all the cubbies, the folding 60/40 seats. When I got home I started internet research and found out just how slick the Yaris was. Then it became my obsession to get one. I had to wait months for it but it was all worth it! I Love my Yaris somethin' fierce!
I think my friend wants a white Yaris LB now.

For us it was a last minute thing...
We had been looking at a couple new smaller trucks, new mustang or used 350Z as well as several other cars worth a lot more then the Yaris.
My last car before my Yaris was a MINT, 99 Chevy Xtreme S-10 4.3L that I paid close to $30,000. But with all the city driving and long distance traveling we do we wanted something smaller and better on fuel (xtreme =16=18mpg in town) Our truck was costing us $60-$75 a week in fuel. So we were looking at a newer or new car in the $30-$35,000 price range and something that gets 25mpg or better if possible.
After about 6 months of test driving everything out there we saw our first Yaris sitting at a stop light. My wife commented on how cute it looked and that we should test drive one. My first impression was no way... I doubt it can even get out of its own way. "won't pull the skin off gravy"
But a week or so later she talked me into it.
I gotta admit, before the Yaris i would never have though about an econo box, but this thing was fun to drive and had great mileage and loads of space (5 door RS)
That's when we got to thinking.... Why work our butts off and live paycheck to paycheck just to drive a flashy car and pay crazy insurance rates when we could drive an car like the Yaris and have a bit of playin' around $$$.
We crunched some numbers and quickly realized for what we would have spent on a car like the mustang or used 350Z we could buy 2 econoboxes and still have $$$ left over.
So we started test driving every econobox and small cor out there and then quickly came back to the best out of all of them....and bought the Yaris
It was the best decision we ever made.
With the $$$ we saved over the summer/fall I bought a new 9.9 outboard engine for my boat.
New recliner couch/sofa
I bought the wife a motorcycle (Kawasaki ZZR)
All new Icon leathers, helmet, boots (the works)
And I'm buyin another motorcycle in the next couple months (Suzuki GSX750F) as well as new gear. And best of all....I don't need to trade in my VT600
Instead of $60-$70 a week in fuel for the truck.. I spend $60 a month...and the insurance on the Yaris is $900 cheaper then the truck.
I miss my truck sometimes, afterall it was my dream truck, But with the $$$ I save every month if I really wanted to I could buy another one in a couple years.

I obviously got it for the great gas milage. Averages about 40 miles to the gallon now with 5,000 miles on it. Plus the toyota reliablity.
One big reason was I checked out the toyota engine it would have. Its the same as the echo engine which I found out after doing some internet research is one of the most dependable engines ever made.
I got one of the first ones in the usa so I really didnt' know what to expect. But its been alot better than I could have imagined. Has more get up and go than I thought. And its very comfortable and roomy inside. I'd buy another one right now and trade in my tacoma truck if we didn't have such high licence fees in my state of montana.

I have no idea why some folks aren't getting as good of gas milage. Though I've read that some are. But I know i'm getting around 38 to 40 mpg.. I drive city and country roads. I'm not a lead foot. But do like to get it up to 70 and 75 when the road opens up.
I've read for a while where some folks aren't getting but 30 miles to the gallon. And some are getting around 40 mpg. It is an interesting question why this is.
I wonder if some engines are tuned differently coming out of the factory.

I would guess driving style and fual quality. Everyones definition of driving "easy" is different. I drive softly but I know our fuel here sucks. As a result I get 30-32 with mostly highway miles. I however have a yakima rack with spacebooster box for skis.

One day it was time to get rid of my 2 older cars, and get 1 NEW car. My 2 cars were:
2000 Nissan Maxima SE
2001 Hyundai Sonata
I have never…and I stress NEVER have paid more then $12,000 for a car, new or used, Bu I was thinking about doing it...
I was batting around the idea of the Honda Civic, Pontiac G5, and the Saturn Sky. My girlfriend at the time was looking at cars too… She wanted a Corolla.
While at Toyota they showed us a Yaris Sedan. When I got home I checked out Toyota’s site. I must have built this damn car about 40 different times.
Then I did a search on MSN for “Yaris Enthusiasts” and found a couple of different sites. I joined a few to ask questions. I was EXCITED to see that this car had potential for Mods. I checked out a couple of other sites, then joined this one.
Before I even knew I wanted the car, I started asking questions… reading about everyone plans and ideas…
Hell, I had already ordered parts for the thing before I picked it up... And i'm sure some of you remember the Bank of America BS...
Shit this is getting long…I’ll just sum up…
YARISWORLD.COM is the reason I bought my DARTH YARIS!
Thank you guys…ummm and girls!

At first I was looking at cars costing about €10,000. I almost ended up ordering the little Toyota Aygo (1.0l engine), but decided against it for security reasons ("only" 4 stars at EuroNCAP, no Vehicle Stability Control available).
After doing some more reading and listening to the in-laws' experience with the 1st gen Yaris (Echo in the U.S.), the new Yaris turned out to be "perfect" for me, the wife and our 2 cats.
Options: VSC (+disk brakes), A/C, alloys, larger engine (1.3l) and 5 doors. Here the Yaris Sol (one up from the base model) comes standard with: power everything, 9 airbags, seatwarmers and telescopic steering wheel. Final cost is about €20,000 ($25,000) which is kind of much for a small car, but I'm sure it'll be worth it when I get it...in about another month and a half.
Still can't wrap my head around the fact that in the U.S. you can get Yaris with automatic transmission. And, with the sedan, what's the point of a Corolla anymore?

I lost my first car (91 Integra) falling off a 400 ft cliff. Landed my ass in the hospital for 7 days and had no car since then. Thought my mom was gonna let me use the Murano my whole last year of highschool, but during October when I came home, all to find a brand new Yaris sitting in the Car port. I was like, "Whos Yaris is that in my spot?" and shes like mine. So like....a week later she let me "use/have" it since she wanted her murano back so now I have this Yaris.

No real automatic for Yaris in Europe. :iono: There's the MMT (Multi-Mode Transmission), which is still actually a manual box, but with robotic, clutchless gear shifting. From what I've heard, it can be jumpy and inconsistent during acceleration. Still costs almost as much extra as real automatic...

The rest (kinda cute, isn't it?) is just icing on the cake. It was purchased to get me to work @ 76 miles round trip. Man, does that ever add-up (almost 20,000 miles per year alone)! It was to be a disposable car. I was gonna wear it out 'n' throw it away like a paper towel, then buy a new one, and so on... Since then, I changed jobs. My new job is now a mere 10 miles round trip, so my wife is driving it to take her to work (44 miles round trip). Looks like I'm not gonna wear it out so fast. hehe We use it all the time though, not just for going to work, it's a great little around-town ride! I just hate how the SUV's and pickups act, like I'm supposed to move out of their way, even when there's a car right in front of me which is why we're not moving any faster. Well, I had an old Ford Festiva for my daily econo drive, that I didn't trust much after 100 thou. miles, and didn't drive much. But my SUV only gets 17 mpg. The Yaris LB looked like the perfect replacement, but when I checked the area dealer, they didn't have one yet. He called me a couple of days later with an S Sedan with power package, spoiler and 5-speed that he thought I should see, and it was love at first sight/drive. I've gotten 37-41 mpg over the 11,000 miles we've been together so far, and I still grin a little when I see her in the parking lot after a long day at work. The SUV only pulls the boat now, and the Yaris is a joy for a daily drive. I agree that the standard sedan looks kind of not so hot, but the S with the spoiler, she's pretty sweet for me.

You pretty much listed everything there is. And I agree on almost all points except 3, 7 and 10.
#3 - I didn't get to pick the color. They only had two liftbacks with manual transmission and power package - meteorite metallic and black metallic. Black one was being sold when I showed up at the dealeship.
#7 - I agree that Yaris handles very good. But Mini is a little devil when it comes to handling. And its wheels aren't wider either! Its body is shorter than Yaris' by an inch or so.
So unless you put wider tires on Yaris and replace suspension, it's no match for Mini handling wise.
#10 - Time will tell.
And I'd like to add an 11th point.
#11 - My primary motivation for getting a Yaris LB was my obsession with little cars. I just don't see myself driving anything bigger anymore.

I went from having a company car to having to pay for my own gas, insurance, tolls etc. My Jeep gets 13mpg highway, less in traffic. I now get reimbursed the federal rate (currently 48.5 cents per mile) to use my own vehicle. The Yaris pays for itself easily via my job and I keep the Jeep for fun.:headbang:

I did trade in a Ford truck, though, Mr. Smarty Pants.
I think the check I wrote ended up being $75X.XX. Ha ha!
Seriously, I bought it because I drive 100 miles round trip to work everyday, and the Tundra (at the time) had the worst gas mileage of all the full size pickups, except for the Titan, which is junk. Going from 18 to 35 mpg is pretty cool. Now I have much more redneck money each month to pour into guns, NASCAR collectibles, and my local Republican party.

As a first car it was:
1. cheap (bought it used)
2. its class safetiest (Euro NCAP)
3. and its economic (5.8 liters / 100 km) (combined) (MultiMode)
That´s why i bought yaris

Why I bought it- Low purchase price, safety rating, gas mileage, Toyota reliability, euro-styling.
Bought to be a commuter beast of burden.
Ownship experiences: how pleasant it is to drive around town (with the rear anti-sway bar), how poorly it tracks (holds the straight ahead) at high speed on the highway & how easy it is to DIY service.
I was passing a local toyota dealership and saw the Red TRD package yaris , stopped by,test drove it , and drove home away with it ...traded my junk 97 mazda 626 for $280 ....
wifey said I was crazy ....oh well ...the mazda didn't even want to start when it's raining outside..
and Im mod happy now

1. 167K on prior ride and starting to burn >=1.5 quart oil every oil change
2. Yaris doubled my MPG over the 120 mile daily commuting roundtrip :-)
3. Similar form as my first car (76 Civic hatch)
4. best value (MPG + finance cost) at 5 year & 10 year intervals
5. Availability of Toyota and after market parts (I do all the maintenance and many repairs myself)

we had a jeep grand cherokee limited 4.7 V8 that the transmission went on.. we foolishly replaced it (jeep had 175K on it) and then shortly after gas spiked and we decided we would dump the jeep and get into a car. we went from $80 in gas a week to $20 every week and a half. made a HUGE difference. the gas almost pays for the car lol
we love this car far more than the jeep. the jeep was really nice though had every option they offered for it. we sold it locally and i see it parked around town here and there :) other than having a car payment its something i dont regret doing. i do hate car payments though. we didnt have a car payment for 3 years before we got the yaris.. been tight at times but its nice to not have to worry about the car breaking down

I wanted something with better mileage than my Jeep (this was when gas prices were close to $5.00) so I did some research on the net and stumbled across YarisWorld. Loved the look of the car, the MPG's and the enthusiastic community. I was sold, kept the Jeep for winter and for the mountains, use the Yaris for everything else.

Ditto! My first car was a '79 Civic hatchback and the Yaris is (IMO) the modern equivalent. It's small, fuel efficient, reliable, easy to work on and fun to drive. The fact that it is a safe car is a bonus.....I was very impressed with how my '09 held up when I rolled it so I bought a new '10 last week!
BTW....was your Civic a 1200 or a CVCC? Mine was a 1200 and I loved it....perfect high school/first car for me. I've owned 3 of them over the years, but they are all but impossible to find now.

The car in one of my favorite TV shows caught my attention...
http://www.ramblingsofatvwhore.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/psych_car_1.jpg
Actually, although Psych is suppose to be in Santa Barbara, CA it is actually filmed in Canada; hence the Canadian specs Yaris.
Then I had a chance to drive one as a rental car on a work trip, I fell in love but knew I had to get the hatchback (I also love hatches!). I also have a Jeep Wrangler so it evens out my gas mileage (37 MPG vs 16 MPG). I loved my old car, a 95 VW Passat wagon with a VR6; but after 125K+ miles on it, it was starting to show its age. Nothing major, but I knew I wanted a new commuter car and the Yaris just fit the bill perfectly!
Cheers! M2

Wow, Zombie thread!
1. Needed a car QUICK!
2. It's a Toyota (should be reliable)
3. Mileage - (I'm a closet hypermiler)
4. Hatchback - styling
5. Price (only thing cheaper was my smart which does have a little better standard equipment, but now I have a back seat WHEN/IF I need one, don't normally need it or use it)

Cash for clunkers! I never would have bought a new car in my life, actually. Got $4550 for my 530i, which was twice what it was worth with all the work it needed. Plus my Yaris sedan is more fun to drive than the BMW, I can really have fun with it and not have to worry about what's going to break next like I did with the BMW (I maintained it myself for 3 years).

The odd thing about the Yaris showing up on Psych is that the car is owned by Gus, and Gus is the one who drives it, but in certain shots, (similar to the one pictured), Shawn is show on what would normally be the driver's side of the car in the US... So it makes me wonder...

Three and a half years ago (my story starts way back then) i owned a 2000 Ford escort zx2. when i graduated college and started my full time career i had the money to replace the aged (and broken) escort with something i hoped would be more reliable.
spring 2007 is when i started looking for a replacement, and i had seen the yaris commercials on TV, had seen several LB's running arround town, and finally (after calling the dealer a hundred times) managed to catch a LB on the lot before the car was delivered to its owner.
the local dealer is the ONLY toyota dealer in the region (south central alaska) and they were only getting a trickle of Yarii.
once i drove the car that one time, i knew that was my car. price was too high tough (these were fully kitted out ones they were getting $15K+) and the salesman told me they would not be getting any of the stripped out ones i had read about. so i left, heartbroken.
i wound up with a VW Jetta TDI (another car i had wanted forever) what a rolling TURD! in the 2 years i owned that car i replaced: Battery, Timing belt (30K miles early), water pump, clutch, flywheel, and was getting ready fora tear down of the injection pump. thousands of dollars burned on that POS.
one day last december, that jetta stranded me at work for the third time in a week. once i got it started i drove home, changed, and went straight to toyota. 2 hrs later i had my shiney new '09 LB the stripped out base model, paid in full.
i love the looks, mileage, handling, and the fact that its not very common up here.
that was a long write up. but i have a need to set up my stories.

In early Feburary 2009, 3 months after making my last payment, my 2003 Hyundai Accent was totalled when it was hit from behind by a Dodge truck. I got offered a little over $5000 for it from the insurance company, which I took but when I accepted it, my rental car was cut off.
I looked online and found the Yaris one of the 3 new cars in my price range and my wife kept telling me how great Toyotas were(I've owned 3 Ford and Hyundai), plus I saw what kind of mileage it got, so I hit a few lots here on a Sunday and found a Yaris in my price range equipped the way I wanted it(plain jane, with the only options being A/C, stereo, Floor Mats, power nothing, 5spd.), and it was the cheapest brand new car I could find in town.
I went back the next day and test drove that very same Yaris(white with gray pinstripes) and kind of made the salesman nervous when I said I hadn't driven standard in 13 years. I liked the car, they had a rebate deal, plus my credit union gave me a good rate(4.9%), so I put the $5K down on it and picked it up the next day.
I've been driving it for almost 10 months and it's a great little car. It's fun to drive and gets great mileage. People in parking lots sometimes ask me what it is and ask me about it, and I give it a big thumbs up. The center speedometer takes some adjusting to, and it's a little short on trunk space if you don't put the back seat down but overall, It's a great little car. My attorney got me a settlement for my pain/suffering from the accident, and put that into the car as well, so it will be paid off in 2 years.
I like this little car and plan to drive it for a long time.

+1. I had another reasonable car before I wrecked it. Seeing as how that was my 4th used car and my 2nd wreck, I decided it was time to just finally suck up the idea of having a car payment and get a new one. I drove a Versa for a month as a rental and though it was nice, but decided on a Yaris after much research. The 40 MPG rating is what sold me. Haven't looked back since.

Because gas at the time was $4.39 a gallon and I was spending $450 a month just in gas while using my truck for the commute to work. So I figured I'm already spending that much I might as well have a NEW car that gets 40 mpg and the payment of a couple hundred bucks. So I saved about $100 a month and drive a NEW car.
Now I belong to this forum, met great people who share the same interest and I'm so glad I own one.

I got 165,000 miles out of the ford truck and I wanted something that I could get 300,000 miles out of. Small cars are fun to drive and the potential for mods is great with a Yaris. eht13- really? did you have a lot of problems with your cars? Yes, haha. The Saab did not have too many surprise problems, but the scheduled maintenance was pretty expensive. And as time went by (especially after the warranty expired), the things that needed to be fixed increased. The Volvo may have been less reliable than the average Volvo, from the things people say about driving a Volvo for a long time. The scheduled maintenance was somewhat expensive, although less than the Saab, but the big thing was surprise problems that came up... some that I found, some that the dealer found and showed to me. It had a few intermittent ongoing issues, and then others that directly affected reliability; not starting sometimes, for example... a pretty negative reliability experience. One of those issues proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back... so I had to get the Volvo fixed one more time in order to sell it (I had already spent more on repairs than I made selling it) and then I got the Yaris (we had already traded the Saab in previously when we got my wife's current car).

Traded an '07 Civic lx coupe on it. The civic had great styling, better ride, better fit and finish etc. I hated the way it handled on winding mountain roads. Electric steering was enough out of sink to be very tiresome on long mountain road trips. No hatchback was a negative too. The Yaris electric steering is much more precise and nicely damped. Having rented one on holiday I liked it's imaginative and unique design. Miss the smoother ride of the Civic but all in all I prefer the Yaris. I drove the Fit and felt its steering was a bit squirrelly for my taste. Unlike the Fit, the Yaris dash is clean and uncluttered and the seats are much more supportive for my body. The Yaris is the best bang for the buck since my '82 Civic Wagon. Lets see if it can last like that one did.

I had a Chevy Express van, who's tranny was slipping & used lots of gas. Traded it in for my Yaris, after obsessing over the car for a few days. Another appealing feature was the lightweight of the vehicle, making it ideal candidate for performance mods. It was the only LB on the lot when I bought it. had 15" 7-spoke alloys and vinyl graphics on the side, along with a fancy tailpipe tip, fancy pedals, and fancy shift knob.
I have since: removed the vinyl graphics, which my friends called Barbie stripes, installed Tanabe DF210 lowering springs, NST pulley kit, Apexi WS2 axleback, Scangauge, TRD rear sway bar, 1zz throttle body and Rotrex supercharger along w/ bigger fuel injectors, & A pillar pod w/ tach, boost, and Air/Fuel gauges. Unfortunately my mechanic cracked one of the pistons, while driving the vehicle w/ too much boost, so its in the progress of getting lower compression forged pistons & forged rods installed. I have also purchased some 17" 10-spoke rims, which I hope to put on, along w/ Tokico blue shocks.

My Chevy Cavalier was slowly dieing and so I had to replace "Callie". I was just out looking on that Sunday in March of 08 and I went around the corner. The sun hits me in eyes and when I could finally see, there was my "Yazzie". I know the salesman thought I was daffy as duck because I said it growled little bit like a Ford Mustang I had looked at (practical side one that arguement). I found out later that growl was because I had in drive 3 instead of drive. I love Yaris. I hope "she" can last for at least 11 years, that is how long I had my "Callie".

My wife bought hers because it was the only new car we could afford at the time. I bought mine, after she crashed my Fit, because it was all we could afford again. I don't regret either purchase, I do miss some of the fancier things the more pricier cars came with but overall we pay nothing a month for two cars. Both financed plus insurance and gas. A little more than 500 a month total. Plus my work reimburses mileage at 60 cents/mile, so 30-50 miles a day or so at 30-40 mpg I would say I am winning that battle.
I like having the extra cash that others don't when it comes to overall cost per month. That and we are relatively green people so the less of everything aspect of the Yaris is nice. Less metal and material used, less emisions, less upkeep ie oil etc, less everything.
These little guys do look pretty good at the right height with the right set of wheels too. Not to mention they can be made into crazy machines like CaliYaris's turboed Yaris.
