View Full Version : Aux Input Wire

I have searched through the forums and read a bunch of different threads on various Aux Input problems, but I haven't found one quite like what I have. I recently purchased a repossessed 07 Yaris LB that had the radio stolen from it. It was fixed before I got to it, but the Aux Input doesn't work.

I have the "Stereo Input Jack," but when I look under the jack, there is no wire or harness plugged into it. Also, when I look at the back of the stereo, there is nothing plugged into the Auxiliary Input spot. I cannot find anything to plug into that spot either.

Another problem that I have found is that there are 2 unknown wires that have been cut and not fixed. One is red, and the other is what looks like a shielded audio cable that has 3 wires inside of the shielding. I am not sure what they do, because the radio and all of its other functions work properly.

I wouldn't mind running my own wire, but I can't find a place to buy the connectors for either end. I know I can't get them from the dealer. I found one here (http://www.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/bin/TE.Connect?C=1&M=BYPN&TCPN=175964-1&RQPN=175964-1), but I can't buy it and I can't find the other end.

Any help is much appreciated.

I guess my main questions are:
1. How can I get my factory Aux Input to work?
2. What are the wires that have been cut for?
3. I haven't been able to locate the wires for the Aux Input, is it possible they are just hidden somewhere?

The Aux wires are part of the harness, so I believe that those two clipped wires are part of the original Aux wiring. I separated the Aux wiring from the harness on Crashy and sold it. Here's a picture of the separated wiring:

If my car has the Aux Jack, then should it have the wiring for it as well? The wires that are cut in my car look similar to the wires from Crashy, but a different color, could I possibly have the wire in there and not be able to see the ends? Should the wire be easy to trace?

The wire is very easy to trace - It goes from the center console, under the auxjack, to the center of the dash. It is just taped into the larger bundle along the way. I would look for a cut wire under the center console. If there isn't one there, nor do yo see the connector laying there, then it probably didn't have the wiring to begin with.

Can you tell what the wire is that has been cut from my picture? I don't know what it could be...I was thinking either the aux jack or the air bags, those are the only things I wouldn't have noticed not working. I can take more pictures if need be.

All of the airbag wires have yellow on them, so I don't believe they are airbag ones. It would help to have pics that show exactly where the cut wires enter a bundle of wires.

Look at picture 4. Where you are holding the wires.
Near the top of the photo. It looks like the other end of the cut bundle you have in your hand.
Taped to the larger bundle.

I took some more pictures. I looked some more and there is definitely no Aux connector lying around under there. The wires go into a bundle that is on the right side behind the AC controls. They go straight up and split somewhere behind the radio and split off down near the floor. Part of the bundle goes back and connects to the gear shift (automatic) and the auto locks. I know they go together, but I am wondering what they operate and if it has something to do with the Aux input that doesn't work.

I also stripped the wire and found 1 red, 1 green, and some bare shielding.

The red and red and green up top definitely look to be the AUX wiring. Oddly though it looks like sedan, rather than LB Aux wiring. On the Sedan aux cable, the shielded red and green are Left and Right inputs and the separate red is the Aux switch.

Yes, I think you're right. I was able to get my hands on a wiring diagram and found this. I actually think that the wires don't connect together, but that the connectors were cut off at both ends. This would explain why I can't find the connectors anywhere. I was able to find part numbers for the connectors:

D74 - 90980-12259
D75 - 82824-21030

Can I order these connectors and make my own wire? If I have to, I can make my own connector from some old computer parts that I have lying around, but I'd rather do it the easy way...

Those part numbers are just the connectors. You would also need the 4 pins for each side. The connectors are probably $10 each and the pins $12+ each from the dealer (and they are not common pins that you can grab from an electronics supply house).

D74 Pins: 82998-24290
D75 Pins: 82998-12870

Actually, after looking for the part numbers, isn't D75 only for the Sedan? Would I need the D79, 8 pin connector? Do you know the part numbers for that?

Your Jack does look like the one that connects to D79: 82824-52330

Does that D79 connector also need special pins in it? What would that part number be?

Same as D75

Thanks, CTScott! I will make my own connector some time in the next few weeks and repost when I have it working.

I would just find terminals that fit the pins and then heat shrink them.

Just to update on my status with making my own connectors, I ordered the three part numbers from Toyotapartszone.com:

D74: 90980-12259 for $5.09
D74 Pins: 82998-24290 for $11.47
D75 Pins: 82998-12870 for $11.45
Plus $8.70 shipping, total price: $36.71

The D79: 82824-52330 apparently cannot be purchased from anywhere, including the dealer. I found a forum somewhere saying that you could purchase it if you searched from your VIN, but my VIN did not turn up that part number. I was able to find it from the Tyco website (http://www.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/bin/TE.Connect?C=1&M=BYPN&TCPN=175964-1&RQPN=175964-1), and ordered a sample for free! All have been shipped, but with the recent earthquakes in Japan, they are taking longer to get here. I will re-post when I have the wire working.

Did you just order one of the D74 and D75 pins? That part number is just for one.

nobleboy

Yes, I ordered one of each. The part number came up as a terminal repair kit, so I was assuming it was a set. Do you mean that I would have to order 4 more D74 pins and 4 more D75 pins? If so, that would be 4 x $11.47 + 4 x $11.45 = $91.68 plus whatever shipping would be. That seems really high for terminal pins that would be like $0.10 each at the electronics supply store...

That's correct and what I mentioned in post 12. $12 each is crazy for $0.10 or less pins, but that is the world of automotive mark-up.

Well, in that case, I guess I will be taking the pins and the connectors with me to the electronics supply store here and seeing if I can find something to make it work. They have lots of used parts for super cheap, so they might even have an old Toyota connector that I can take the pins out of. I'm sure with what I have I will be able to make something work. It is definitely not worth $100 more that the $37 I already spent. I could have purchased a new stereo with AUX input for that much.

I have finally finished my project! Unfortunately, I found out that I wasted lots of money.

First of all, a warning to anyone who wants to buy the Toyota part numbers listed above, they are not correct. The D74 connector that goes into the stereo head unit had to be dremeled down for it to fit. The part from Tyco for D79 was not even close and could not be dremeled down to fit because the pin locations were too far apart. Also, the pins used inside the Toyota connectors are the same as the common ones in the electronics store, so don't buy a $12 pin when you can get the same one for $.10.

After realizing that the parts I bought would not work for $37, I went to the electronics store and got all of the parts I needed for $2.60 including spares. I made my own connectors and everything works great!

Now I will attempt to return the parts that I bought from Toyota...

This is totally out of nowhere, but I have one of these:

and that's it. I've also never done any stereo work of any kind before. Is this something that would be too ambitious to try as a beginner? If I were to take it in somewhere, what would you recommend I do/ask and how much should I expect to pay? I drive a 2008 Yaris sedan.
