I have a GPS and an Ipod and due to there being only one power outlet in the vehicle I am thinking about attempting this:

Putting a usb plug next to the AUX in one of the blank accessory plugs next to the handbrake. How bad of an idea is this? How would you run the wire? and which exact wire should I tap into? Can I buy spare accessory plugs in case i botch the job?

It's not a bad idea at all. I haven't put one in my Yaris since my HU has navigation and an interface for my iphone, but I did mount dual USB ports on my Xterra's dash, back when I got it in 2004.

Your easiest power source for it is the power to the existing outlet at the bottom of the dash. The Gray wire is +12 and the White/black wire is ground. From there it is easy enough to bring the wire through the center console to one of the plugs.

I thought about doing this too but my head unit already has USB and a iPod interface as well. I do plan on mounting the USB interface for the HU by the handbrake while I have it all taken apart though. But yeah as CTScott said, it wouldn't be a problem to borrow from the +12 of the existing wire. IIRC all you need to set it up for 5v is a voltage regulator (w/ heatsink) and (optionally) a capacitor.
