I need to change my 2007 stock Yaris tires (185/60/15) and after shopping for tires in my area, there are 4 kind of tires that seem to be good choices and meet my budget. What would be the better choice between these :

- Yokohama Avid Touring-S
- Yokohama Avid TRZ
- Kumho Solus KR21
- Pirelli P4

I've recently run the Yoko Avid touring on my wife's car and my little pickup. Nice tire, no issues.

I recall belt separation being an issue across the board with Pirelli when I worked in tire shop years ago. That was in the mid '90s. Things may have changed since.

hey there,
I work in the parts dept at a Ford/Toyota dealership and I'm the person people usually come to with tire questions. From my experience, the Touring-s is a good match for this car; inexpensive, good mileage, good quality. Overall, yokohama is a pretty good company, we really don't ever see many issues with them (unless caused by external factors). We have probably put at least 150-200 sets of these on various cars in the last 3-4 years with good luck. go for the Touring!

Avid TRZ's are good tires as well, but I think the touring-s is the best bang for the buck. I've seen TRZ's have a few wear issues if not perfectly rotated on schedule, etc. (also, an 80,000 mile tire is marketing hype mostly. most people drive in such a manner as to prevent this mileage being reached).

STAY AWAY from the Pirellis. I have never seen a set on a yaris, but there are a million ford focuses with them. Havent seen the bext luck out of those.

no comment on Kumho....I know people that love them, but Ive never had a set personally and we don't deal with them much (not many Kumhos are recognized by OEM Ford/Toyota)

It's great to have a parts man on our side.

Hankook H727 was one of my choices at first, but they cost 120$ more than the others. Since I have a budget to respected, Hankook's are not a choice anymore...

If you're considering Yokohama tyres, I would look at the Yokohama AVID ENVigor in a 195/60/15.

Some information on the tyre: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findTireDetail.do?pc=43490&counter=2&ar=60&rd=15&sw=false&cs=195

Someone we know has the AVID TRZ for his 2010 3 door . He uses it for his business and has put over 30,000 miles on them . He told us he's very impressed with them .

envigors are a GREAT tire (much better than the H4S they are phasing out). We have put at least 50 sets of these on in varying fitments and everyone seems pleased. The sole caveat is the increased speed rating. keep in mind there may be a slight ride differences due to this.

Personally, both my personal cars (08 yaris lb, 07 wrx) currently have W rated tires so its no big deal for me, but some customers complain if you uprate the speed rating and the ride is harsher.

I've had the "Yokohama Avid TRZ" for about a year now and I'm happy with them.
They have been more than adequate in all kinds of NY weather/roads and have pretty good dry pavement grip.
They are a godd AS tire

I have absolutly no regrets about getting them.

One thing I would add, having no experience with any of the tires listed but LOTS of experience with Life, and tires, etc. Do NOT go for the cheapest tires regardless, ever. I know these ^^^ tires are well-received (except the Pirellis) but please always check to see how much it would cost you if the tires are crap. If your deductible is $500, then don't bitch about a $200 more expensive set if it is the right tire for the job. It will probably work out cheaper in the end.

On the other hand, don't think the most expensive tire is always the best.

For example, a brand like Michelin may be very good but, they are way over priced judging by my experience with them.

Good point. Just because it's more expensive doesn't necessarily mean it's a better tyre.

True on the money thing, but I'd add that if you live in a place where there's a good chance you'll get snow in the winter, get winters. That's a much better way to spend your money than on jacked insurance premiums when your rock hard Ultra HP "all seasons" slide you into an oncoming lane or a ditch. There's just no "perfect" tire out there for all weather conditions - no matter what the manufacturers claim.

Besides, having a set of winters lets you get sweet summer performance shoes without the crappy ice/snow sipes :burnrubber:

Isn't the H727 the new Four Season tire? If so, what extra you spend now will be easily recouped when you don't need winter boots plus steelies come next fall.

I already have winter tires (with the winters we have in Quebec, winter tires are a must, plus they are now mandatory), so the new tires won't be used during winter.

i've had both sets of the yokohamas and they were pretty similar. both were a night-and-day difference from the original goodyear eagle ls oem tires. i'm currently using the avid-s touring tires and love them! they are extremely quiet and comfortable. not super-sporty, but i don't drive that way.

the avid-trz were also a good tire, but they had one minor annoyance that bugged me all the time. there's a wide groove in middle, for water evacuation i believe, that would always get pebbles stuck in there. the loud 'clicking' noise would drive me nuts- thought i had driven over a nail!

i had pirellis on my old civic and they were ok, but overpriced. no experience with the other.

had a guy refuse to take a special order set of tires (that I can't return ) because of the "groove". said they looked like rocks might be a problem and wanted to know if I had any "made in the USA" tires like goodyear, or if we only sold "asian crap."

oh yea, this is for his japanese built toyota.....:bellyroll:

sheesh, some people

YOu'd be better off getting summer tires in that case, even a cheap tire like a the Dunlop Direzze DZ101 would be a big step up in warm weather grip compared to an all season.
