Cold air intake

Looking for info:

Recently purchased a 2008 Yaris 4 dr sedan. Would like to put a cold air

intake on it to increase horsepower, possibly mileage, not sure what to buy?

I don't want to spend a fortune on this piece of equipment, any suggestions

would be greatly appreciated, any advice welcome.

first off - welcome! i don't personally have a cold air intake, but i can tell you a few things about them just from reading what others have posted on here.

you'll probably get better results in the mileage department rather than the performance increase. most folks on here give a 'seat of the pants' dyno that it definately feels faster, but more than likely it's just a few horsepower at best(ie. 2-3). you'll get a few more with more mods like an exhaust and pulleys added in, but realistically the only way you're gonna get significant hp increases with the 1nz-fe is thru boost(super or turbo) or lots of engine work.

you will notice an increase in the amount of noise, however. some people like the aggressive tone an aftermarket intake produces. as for what brands i personally would go with the afe that microimage sells. it's a 'short ram' set-up, but with a nice-looking(and functional) divider that keeps some of the heat from the engine away from the filter. i like it because it's so clean it looks almost factory! the brands that go all the way down into the wheelwells sound nice, but you live in the midwest like i do and i would be leary of snow or rain getting in there. plus, i've heard they can be a pain to install.

^ +1. You won't get much hp or mpg increase from a cai. I dyno'd my Yaris before and after putting one on and I lost .50 whp. You'd be better off reducing weight, ie removing parts like the back seat or replacing parts with lighter ones like light weight battery, wheels or carbon fiber parts.

Thanks for the info, greatly appreciated. Getting more mpg is probably what
I need more than anything given the price of gas and the fact that I have to
drive 130 miles to/from grad school 1x per week.
