alternator help!

so it would seem as though the slight bit of tension on the wiring going to the mounted-upside-down alternator (due to the blitz supercharger) has caused the nut that connects the battery to the alternator to shear off.

is this fixable? do i need a new alternator? what can i do!? i need to fix this pronto...!

27357 broke....the stud that you attach to the wire from the battery

you should run a new cable from battery to alternator. wire isnt near as expensive as an alternator, and you can run it backwards (from alternator to battery) and put as much as you need on the run.

looks to me like you can get away with just a regulator. if that's what that component is. you'll likely have to visit an alternator repair shop for it though, and it may be just as expensive as a new alternator. i know bmw and their alternator is like 800 bucks, and the regulator is 600 by itself....so to me the regulator is the expensive part.

autozone has rebuilt for 289, -75 core charge. so it's not too bad i suppose.

Edit: Nevermind, I had a different bolt break.

That bolt is part of that assembly, so you can't repair it without changing that part of the alternator.

*sigh*, going to get a new alternator shortly....$100 used....

any ideas about what i can/should do to have this NOT happen again?

I think the key is just not torquing the bejesus out of it. The post is copper, so it is pretty easy to snap it overtightened.

did it break from it being over tightened, or from the wire pulling on it?

well, since it was a nylon threaded nut that i could only get on far enough to NOT have it fall off....im pretty sure it was the wire pulling on the post....

i hit a big bump/pothole/something today and the battery light came on

previously it had been coming on on the highway as the engine vibration and/or the wind was pushing the connection loose on the giant gap between the terminal and the nut...

well, she actually doesnt know....she's been sick the last day and is currently in bed

i installed new alternator while zoe slept in the aveo in the driveway...

all seems to be well

btw, bonus point for no air conditioning on this one. why, you ask?

1. i was able to feed the alternator down and under the car, so i didnt have to take off the s/c to get the broken alternator out.
2. i was also able to put on the bottom bolt of the alternator and attach the plug and wire that connect to the alternator before setting it up into place...

anyways, hopefully it will be fine from here on out...

Use a cable guide with a bracket to keep the cable from flexing. Maybe a hose clamp with a bracket
