View Full Version : Pennsylvania window tinting law

I'm profoundly confused.

A google search brings up a website (http://www.berksweb.com/users/dmv/tint/) that says PA law just states it must be possible to view the interior of the vehicle, in other words, tint can't be too dark. It says the PennDOT interpretation is 70% tint, and asks the police to enforce 70% tint -- however this is not the law, and the website states tinting below 70% is legal because it is not prohibited (so, I can get cited, but get it overturned in court? what's going on here?).

So... in other words, I should be okay (by law, not by police) with some 30-35% tint, which is all I would want anyway because I drive a lot at night. But summer is coming...

I called two different local Pennsylvania tint shops, and asked as a new customer what the legal tint limit in PA was. The first shop said 70% on back windows, no tint on front windows, but they would install any tint I wanted. The second shop said tint was illegal for my car, I asked again to be sure, and indeed any tint anywhere on my car was supposedly legal -- but he said they would install tint for me for $250 anyway. The second shop is a place that ONLY does tint... the other place is audio/performance/tint. So for trusted advice, where else would I go?

I see lots of cars with tint around here, and they don't seem to be bothered by police. I absolutely do not want to drive around in an "illegal" car.

you can go as dark as you want on the back windows basicly any window behind your head so passenger windows and rear windshield. any tint on the front windows is illegal almost everywere in the us...pa cops are kind of lax wen it comes to the tint unless you live in bad areas were cops have to worry bout gang members and a lot of violence. i see blacked out cars everywere by me and never seen any pulled over and none of my friends have been ticketed for their tints. im sure there will always be that one stubborn bust your balls cop but wut you gonna do. just as another point most pa inspections will not pass if ur tinted the front windows. so if u do tint call around and see what shops will pass you.

I just moved to PA a few months ago. I had a window tint strip going across my windshield, but the guy told me to take it off before he would inspect it because it wouldnt pass. My front side windows are 30% tint and 20% in rear side and rear windows. He told me he only cares about the windshield and doesnt have to inspect the tint level on the rest of the windows

For the tint strip on the windshield, it's usually the size more so than the tint level that makes it legal or illegal. I think it's around 4 or 5 inches that's allowable...

Very nice looking Yaris.

Was the film difficult to install?

Has the car been state inspected since installing?

Yes, the tint was easy to install,I used a credit card wraped with a paper towel to remove air bubbles...
No grief from our law enforcement...
My inspection mechanic isn't worried about it...
This tint is easy to remove also no adhesive, just static...

the tint is fine. I am from NYS. the lower the number the deeper the tint. I have 5 on the rear hatch window and 20 on the rear windows and front windows which is legal but i had to go get them removed and had 30 put on. anything higher then 30 is like a very light light tint. here is a pic of my yaris when it has 20 and 5 ok.
