View Full Version : Best friend Ted hates the Yaris

I got my 3 door LB Yaris last year, right before I had to park it for the winter. Where I live, wintertime 4 wheel drive isn't "handy", it's a necessity, so we continued on in the '89 Toyota Corolla All-Trac. Still got in the high 20's mpg all winter, (low 30's come summer) best of all it is a 4 door, and Ted has the back seat all to himself . Now that I am starting to finally drive the Yaris again, it has led to some friction between us.
I took the back seat out, and the resulting area, though great for hauling stuff and general weight reduction is not so good for passengers. Riding along side me in the front passenger seat is not what either one of us are used to, so, after some thought I came up with a scheme to make the rear seat-less Yaris more user friendly for a rear passenger. First try out and some pics tomorrow.

Something minor like a car shouldn't cause friction between true friends. Tell him to grow the fuck up and get used to it.

I've tried that, and it just made things worse, he then acts like I am punishing him for something he did wrong, and then I feel guilty. I think the mod I came up will do the trick though.

Well it's still weird (in in a sense, kind of disrespectful) for a passenger to sit in the back when it's just the two occupants. The driver is kind of relegated to like chauffeur instead of companion/friend.

You drive your friend around in the backseat? That's like, weird, man.

Any particular reason why you don't want to put the seat back in it?

Well, I reckon Ted might be a big feller. Either that or he's of the canine persuasion. Or both.

But the front has more space if they back the seat up

Seriously man, if he has a problem sitting in your Yaris then don't offer him any more rides in it. Either take the Corolla or ride in his car. You're his best friend, not his bitch.

Even more reason to have "Ted" drive. Saves you the wear and tear on your vehicle :D

I said earlier it was weird for your (human) friend to sit in the back seat.
It's also weird to weird for a dog to ride in the back, and to name a dog, Ted.
Whatever happens with this situation, it's weird.

A test run today of Ted's new seating position. Better, but I noticed my seatbelt (where it attaches to the side) was interfering with him being able to stick his head out the window. That may be a problem as it is legally required here in Idaho to allow your dog to do so. http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu213/simkot/DSC_0756.jpg
I made the platform out of the remaining piece of 5/8" OSB I had leftover from building the sleeping deck. It is supported by the existing indentations at the side of the rear passenger seat, meant to be a place to rest your arms I guess. Two short pieces of 1x2, positioned and screwed after the deck is in place, take out side to side slop, and there will be some, as if you cut it to fit tight, you can't get it in. That chunk of 5/8 weighs 11 lbs, and as soon as I come across a thin sheet of paneling, like 1/8" or so, I'll use that and stiffen it with some aircraft grade spruce, cut into 1x2's, left over from a '46 Taylorcraft wing rebuild. End weight then will be about 3 or 4 lbs.
To keep it positioned fore and aft, two struts (old ultralight aircraft wing rib material) attach to the deck (castellated nuts and a hairpin clip, for quick removal) and the rear fitting that I believe is there for the rear deck to pivot on, don't know I removed that stuff long ago. The only hole or mod to the car itself were the 3/32" holes in the rear strut attach point, and that will not effect it's original use much if at all.http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu213/simkot/DSC_0754-1.jpg

This is better, but I (and Ted) still really need a 4 door, with power windows. Cranked half down, and the front heat on, that is how we roll all winter in the All-Trac except for the interstate. I frigging spoiled him, now he expects it. He went from zero knowledge of the proper way a dog rides in an Idaho rig (got him at the pound 3 years ago) to now expecting it no matter what. I do get a vicarious kick out of how much he enjoys it, it looks like great fun! If only the rear windows rolled down, even halfway! Sorry if I gave the impression in earlier posts I was talking about a person:iono:

When my fur ball died it took hours to shop vac the car out. The wife got the next dog and it's only allowed in the truck.

Well dammit, why the hell didn't you just say he was just an ankle-biting dog in the first place? LOL

Sorry to break it to you OP, but Ted needs to ride in a crate. Unless you've also fashioned a doggy seat belt??
