View Full Version : 16x7 - 40mm offset - 195/50/16 rubbing like a fat kid at a Rave

I figured I would be safe with this combo (195/50/16/ and a 40mm offset 16x7). Ideally I would have gone with 42mm - 44mm offset but all the wheels I liked were 38mm - 40mm so I went with the 40mm
all I have to do is just stare at the car sitting in the driveway and I can hear it rub.
I'm totally baffled
how is it that I see soo many peeps with 16's and chunky tires (205/50/16 - 205/55/16 ) even dudes with 17's and they don't seem to complain about rub?
I already tweaked the fender liners a bit and it helped marginally, but ideally I don't want to take them out (even though there are none in the rear of most cars)
What did you do?, how did you make yours work? with similar wheels/tires?? (maybe I'm dropped too low?) (sitting with about half inch of tire tuck in the front)

Rubbing where?
I'm on 16x7s +42 with 195/50/16s as well. 1.5 inch drop on Megans with 10mm wheel spacers in the rear.
I only experience a rub on hard dips in the rear passenger side. No rubs at all if the wheel spacers are removed.

Mabe try a tire size in 205/40/16 or 205/45/16.

OK, I just saw your picture thread. You are pretty damn low, and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if your rub is in the front while cornering.

1. Post pictures.
2. Give specs on springs/shocks/struts.
3. Describe the rubbing exactly. Where is it, the liner or the fender? use chalk or grease pencil to know this exactly.
4. See #1.

Rubbing front fender liners / 100X worse on drivers side than passenger side (even when I brough my friend for a drive and his 200+ ish was in the passenger seat and my 165ish was in the drivers seat) even then it still rubbed worse on drivers side
Don't think I'm rubbing in the rear at all except for huge hits (bridge expansion joints / big dips etc...)

#1 = Pics below
#2 = STD R1 coilovers / 6kg front - 3-4kg (progressive rate) rear / not sure of valving, have the damping turned down pretty soft for ride. Coilovers are uber adjustable - all the front lowering is done by lowering the entire shock body in the perch (not by frigging with springs / therefore full suspension travel can be maintained) --- not sure of drop, but judging by the tuck in the front (even with tires that are .25 inch taller than stock) I'd say 3 inch front and 2+ inch rear)
#3 = turning right (car leaning to leftside) the drivers side fender liner is rubbing basically non stop
turning left (car leaning to the rightside, it only rubs the fender liner if there is also a bump in the corner / with or without passenger)
driving straight - both front fender liners rub on big impacts (sudden dip in road / crossing a hwy overpass (particularily where bridges meet the road) etc....
Driving straight - both rear fenders rub with really really big impacts or dips
#4 = see #1
tires and wheels again = 16x7 40mm offset - 195/50/16

I'm gonna work on getting better pics of the ride height and the fender liners where the rubbing is (presumably that mud will be rubbed off where it was rubbing)

See if your front struts have slotted holes(top bolt). If so, you can have an alignment shop adjust them to get some negative camber going. If that's not the case, you can get some camber bolts from "Garmu-San".

sitting that low your gonna need camber, might of gone with a 45 profile instead of 50....but some camber will take most of the rub away.
for the fronts you can put a spacer behind the fender where it meets the bumper, put it at the bottom by the wheel where the bumper and fender meet.
The xB guys been doing this for a while, the bumper will stretch about 3/4" out at the bottom and still look right,so you can push out the fender about 1/2" with spacer and remount the bumper.
That will give you some more space for the tire lean when going slow and turning.

The top bolt on the struts ARE slotted and they ARE pushed all the way to promote camber and try to alleviate(sp) the rubbing

ARGHHHHH
WHY DIDN'T I RESEARCH THE TIRES MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I actually found a 195/45/16 in a Yokohama tire (I love YokoHamas!!!)
DAMN
But, its also 1.2 inches smaller outside diameter and that would have definitely thrown off the speedo.
I'm 100% gonna look at this founder mounting thing, and I'm also gonna think about modding the stock fender liner (cutting the section out that rubs / and fibreglassing in a new section that is higher)

Just a thought....since the inner fenders are plastic, is it possible to heat them with a heat gun and shape them?

I was thinking the exact same thing
I also thought about riveting in new pieces of plastic (reshaped)
and I was even wondering about the potential to cut out the areas that rub and fibreglass in - new parts with increased clearance.

I think we can assume from this that you haven't done an alignment. Definitely get some camber bolts and set it at -1 to -1.5 in front. Your handling will improve too.
Your height adjustment is still done on the springs, and you can adjust the shock body so your travel is still correct with that coilover; nice.
