NEW Springs

So last night we picked up some new springs for free, they came off my buddys XB. Anyways there sprints springs i cut a coil off the front using a grinder not a torch because the torch weakens the spring more. BUt like i said cut a coil off the fronts the back sat eveen suprisingly prob cause of the sub enclosure. BUt netherless Just to prove some people wrong MY CUT SPRINGS RIDE THE SAME AS MY UNCUT SPRINGS.
And as i said earlier, using a grinder is the correct way to do it. Springs shouldnt be on long as we just got out tanks in for the bag set up

I agree!! I just cut 2 1/2 coils off front of my dfs and the car sits much bettr!! I will post pics soon just havent had time. I also want to throw on my wheels that i picked from seanele!

cut springs (when done in safe amounts) is perfectly fine

i use my old chop saw when i do

i had to cut a coil off the front springs on my Terkle, cuz it sat higher in the front, lol, but i absolutely love them, they are Vogtland springs BTW

will post pics in next week we are cutting another coil and a half off but once the new enclosure is in. Full Jl components subs and amps are going to be a little heavy. Also have to see whether im doing a camber or just going to go hellaflush and though a 10-15mm wheel spacer in the rear

What happens if you lift the car with a service lifter? Will the springs fall out of their seats? I guess they will atleast at the front and thats one reason why cutting springs isn't very recommandable. With that amount of lowering and stock shocks you will ride on your bumpstops all the time, another reason.

Yes they do fall out of the seats. You just have to be there when they bring car down to make sure they go back in correctly. As far as bumpstops, i of course cut them in half. This not my first rodeo in slammin vehicles. Bottom line is i dont mind some of the inconviences that come along with being LOW and looking good. Thanks for your opion though!!

Cut springs are ghetto, buy some coilovers and dont be cheap, i laugh so hard when i see the cheap asses driving down the street bouncing everywhere cause they have cut springs! Cant wait to see the bags on OP!!! Should look great

Coilovers are so good imo, even for showing off, getting super slammed and flush while still maintaining some ride quality, I'd always go coilover if I wanted to go super low. The flexibility of being able to adjust height and dampening is amazing. I just went for the middle route though, Springs and Shocks upgrade, aiming for performance but for cheaper. I think getting nice springs and shocks is better than getting a cheap coilover. I can see why cutting springs makes more sense for some people though. Please keep us updated since that is by far the cheapest way to go for a drop and sometimes that's all you need.

Equal results huh?? My car would leave yours sitting on an auto-x course or on a backroad. Cut springs are for people with no money, and yes if you would like me to post up pics of all my previous cars that ive drag raced i will, the list goes on and on. I bought this car to modify cause it was something i havent done yet, im a full time Mechanic/Store Manager running a full service Automotive shop where i live, dont tell me you think you know what your talking about, cutting springs on a car is just plain dumb and dangerous cause they dont seat properly on these perches, a few cut coils are ok if the spring is the same diam all the way through, but thats on most older vehicles, keep looking ghetto and getting laughed at, I mean we already get made fun of for driving yaris, i can only imagine what they say when you roll up ..:thumbup:

Ok, I dont want to get in another pissing match. BUT jekqmb is right about handling, and I am only touching on the handling point on this.

Im quoting this because if you actually track a car or even autox a car that have cut springs, you will taking turns at full braking and quite possible tripod (3 wheel on the road, 1 rear wheel in the air).
So if you have to be careful about bringing a car off a jack or a lift and make sure that the spring seats inside the strut mount, you should be worried about taking those sharp turns on the on ramp with uneven roads and pot holes. You cannot tell me that cut springs are just as good as lowering springs and/or coilovers when it comes to handling.

Like I said before, to each thier own.
Cut springs are for showing off on a budget. Be careful driving out there and keep us posted if something should happen. I am curioius of the life of your shocks if you are still running stock ones. Your car looks good, I do like it. Kudos on your mods :thumbsup:

I can see the cut springs on a budget, even if I wouldnt do it myself. I guess I'd worry about going over a big dip in the road, having the car float a bit, and having a spring fall out. I rotate my tires every other oil change and wouldnt want the hassle of dicking with holding a spring in place by hand and stuff.(zip ties? lol) For me, I'd just wait, save up the 139 to 180 and do the new springs, if not doing a whole coilover thing.At least then, you have a spring thats meant for the job. I'd like mine lower too, and will never do the autocross scenario.

No one said if you don't autocross that you aren't welcome on this site, but with that attitude...don't let the door pop your ass on the way out.

Cut springs are for people that want the cheapest way to get the purely cosmetic result of a dropped car and nothing more. If your springs are falling out of the seats when you merely jack the car up, I can't even imagine how lousy your ride quality and cornering limits are. Even a basic TRD set up with stickies like my car has would leave your car in the dust, and ride better while doing it. But hey, your car. Go nuts with it.

Want to cut 3 coils out of your lowering springs? Fine. Want to pee your pants when not everyone agrees with your opinion on cutting springs? Well then, now you've got a problem. And that's what always bothers me with all of you people that go slicing springs. You get mad when somebody points out that there are better ways to go about achieving the same goal.

I am, however, curious what shocks you are running. If they are OEM, Id like for you to let us know how they hold up.. pics maybe if they are leaking or what nots.

I have been running tokico blues on tanabe dfs with 2 1/2 coils cut in front for +35,000 mi in 1yr n 2mos. Also with the bumpstop cut in half. I also have a set of a Teins from seanele who i got my wheels from that i plan on installing with clamps for the front instead of cutting. But for now my low budge cut looks the same as coilovers. If u cut the springs without cutting bumpstop you will of course be everywhere. The bumpstop is what makes the car bounce everywhere try. Like said been doin it for years no prob

If you are worried about the spring falling out, a simple clamp/strap on one end will secure it.

There is nothing wrong with cutting a coil spring as long as all other details are thought through.

Parts are parts. It doesn't matter who made them as long as they work.
