i have the S model, which doesn't really matter. the only time that it is loud is when i floor it. other than that, very quiet compared to other cars. but also beware of its light weight...very prone to cross winds...

YES, forgot to mention that too. also, if a big pick-up like an F-250 passes me in the other lane on the freeway, my car kind of gets sucked in too.

There really isn't much engine noise - they did a good job of insulating the fire wall. Road noise from the wheels was fairly loud until I insulated/sound dampened when I installed my speakers. Now it's much better.
Road noise is fairly high, but that has less to do with the small engine than with the econobox construction. The only time, after the first day of driving it, that I notice the road noise now is when the roads are wet. For some reason, the sound of water being thrown up by the rear tires is transmitted very clearly into the cabin. THe first time it happened, I thought that my hatch wasn't completely closed, because the sound was so clear.

There's really no substitute for driving a car yourself on the roads you typically drive on. People's tolerance and even perception of noise differs greatly, and different road surfaces can make a large difference.

It is a compact car, not a full size vehicle, so the noise will be greater. Given that fact I think it is a relative quiet compact vehicle! I also drive 80+ mph to work every day and I listen to talk radio in the am hours for traffic report and the road noise doesn’t bother me at all.

The biggest noise comes from running in the grooves in the Freeway made by all the studded tires folks feel are necessary up here.
My '66 VW Bug was mucho louder when it too was new in 1966. Talk about valve noise!
And, they had no A/C so you had the windows open going down the FWY in the CA summers at 70MPH. I don't think we could even listen to the rather basic, single-speaker radio in those situations.
FYI: The '66 had the new 40HP engine vs. the previous 36HP model.

isn't the Yaris a sub-compact?

Haha, you have to listen to mine with its muffler!
The car does an excellent job at cutting through the wind and keeping wind noise to a minimum. As for the engine, you'd need to go above 80mph before the engine noise starts to get louder then the wind noise. So all in all, it's good, except for tire/road noise. It could use some more under carriage insulation, but it's to be expected for such a lightweight car.

i wouldnt worry about road noise or the engine cuz mine is pretty damn quiet even over 100mph plus the dealer provided an under coating which reduces road noise by a lot.

I have to turn the stereo down to hear anything coming from the car!! I have driven trucks and suv's before this so it seems very quiet, It also depends on the road itself.

+1
I don't really know how much the undercoating reduced road noise, since mine also had it from day 1. Violin said his noise was reduced when he "insulated/sound dampened". Road/engine noise is a lot less than I would expect from a car like this. It IS one of my bragging points when I tell someone about it.

Weve had our Yaris since 2007 and I dispise the car, Id rather drive my vauxhall van TBH, and yes i is loud on the motorway even at 70 due to no plastic wheel arch liners in the rear and crap soundproofing.

You despise your Yaris, so you joined a forum for Yaris enthusiasts?! Well, uh, welcome to the forum...
Yeah, that was a little off topic... now where was I?
Back to the OP's question:

I'd say that the Yaris is relatively quiet compared to other small cars that I've been in or driven. I mean, if you are in traffic with the air and radio off you can barely hear the engine running. Once you get up to highway speeds, I notice road noise from the wheels a bit and the hum of the engine. The only time I notice that it is noisy is when I'm flooring it, and well, I don't mind that too much... :burnrubber:

you will be more bothered by the slight tick sound the engine makes while stoppped in trraffic and also the sound of ur change in ur side handles or the middle console rushing around while turning stopping or accelerating
even running a aftermarket intake exhaust wont be super loud

drive mine almost solely on the highway 65-80mph everyday, it definitely isnt quiet but i can hear music fine, talk on the phone normally, talk to a passenger just fine. it's a cheap little car and a hatchback at that so you're going to hear the road noise from the rear tires. as for the engine?? not so much- i've driven 10 miles down the highway in 4th gear going slow to get the mpgs up before i wonder why it's actually accelerating when i go to pass someone worth a crap and look down to see i left it in 4th
i do have a quite a bit of sound deadening on only my front doors

The road noise is a bit high, even for it's category (the tercel did as well 15 years ago) but it's still comfortable and "smooth".

You can fix a lot of the road noise from the wheel wells.

i was thinking about just some spray on undercoating, but i imagine bedliner would be a bit tougher

keep in mind you did not buy a lexus there are a bit noisy on the hwy the motor is not very load at all I fixed the road noise in my lb major sound deadening top to bottom the best upgrade i made then would be the sound system the cheapest way to beat the noise is to turn the radio up
the noise is fun! Especially when you take the rear seats out and you can hear the gas swishing in the tank. I can hear every rock that gets picked up by the tires and hits the wheel wells or the underbody. I love it.

^ that's when you hit the undercarriage and wheel wells with some gravelguard
