Usually when a wheel bearing is gone it makes noise all the time while driving. when driving around turns at speed (not just from a stop) it would be a dull almost rubbing sound. I would think it could be the axle or could be a bad ball joint that clunks around when making the tight turn.

Typically a bearing growls and a CV joint(axle) clicks around corners. The balls inside a CV joint get dry if the boot is torn or out of grease for some reason. Or just worn out/broken. They click in and out of the socket making the noise you hear. You could have it checked by a suspension pro if you want to make sure first.

Usually if the boot is torn the bearings in the joint have been exposed to a lot of road crap and are probably damaged(Clicking noise) repair usualy involves taking the whole drive shaft out and replacing bearing and boot.

You can also replace the whole shaft with a rebuilt unit. I'm checking for bearing "howl" myself on my car. Mabye it was the road I was on, I'll have to keep listening for it.
I've been tempted to trade it in for a new Corolla while gas is still such a ripoff...
Those Corollas are pretty SWEET!
