View Full Version : How I stumbled onto cheap sound deadening...

I recently tried to deaden some of the road noise in my LB with a few cans of the "professional grade" sound deadening spray they sell at the local parts stores/Walmart/etc and was less than satisfied with the results...which I anticipated, but I didn't want to spend more than a few bucks on this project. Fast forward to last night, about two weeks later....

I had just finished the A/C low pressure line insulation mod and needed to do a little work to the rear 6.5's. I had the idea to use the remainder of the roll of aluminum tape and apply it over the top of the spray on rubber coating...essentially creating a thin version of dynamat, and it works very well!

I don't know if this method has already been Posted(I couldn't find it anywhere), but it's very cheap, and easy to accomplish. I used one $15.00 roll of aluminum tape to do the A/C and both rear quarter panels. The rubber spray was about six dollars a can and I used two per panel.

I'm going to buy one more roll and apply it over the rest of the hatch since it's coated in the rubber spray from a couple of weeks ago. We'll see how it works everywhere else. I'll grab the DSLR this time...and show my shotty work in great detail.

** You'll need the extreme environment version of the tape as a base layer. It's very thin and conforms perfectly to the various contours. On top of that it's fair game, I've tried all the levels of thickness try had for sale.

WEAR GLOVES! This tape will slice you like a razor blade when you run your fingers across it...three bandages later I put my gloves on. :(

No, it was one of my 1AM tweeker(not literally!) sessions I have once in a while so I didn't take pics...just got excited and busted it out real quick. It took about 45 minutes(since I already had the spray down two weeks ago). The panels were bare, then sprayed with rubber, now it looks like dynomat(reflective aluminum surface). I didn't follow any particular pattern, but the tape is at least three layers thick, some places it's 5-6 layers thick.

Can you give link for russian yaris forum please?
Also, I bought this stuff on Ebay called FatMat. It was cheap and looks like Dynamat...They even included a wooden roller.

Updated with pics, sound is officially deadened at the cost of about 12.00 per panel.

I hope it not too late, I noticed my OP doesn't mention which particular aluminum tape to use. You'll need the extreme environment version of the tape as a base layer. It's very thin and conforms perfectly to the various contours. On top of that it's fair game, I've tried all the levels of thickness try had for sale. I'll edit my OP now, I hope it didnt cause you any inconvienece...

it would seem that this solution is lightweight as well?

It weights about as much as two cans of spray paint(minus the cans) and a half/whole roll of aluminum tape per panel. There is enough of a weight difference that you can feel the doors close more solidly, it feels like you're closing the door to a higher end car.

To everybody:

There are better/more expensive solutions out there, it's not going to be dead quiet inside the car afterwards but the noise is reduced and the typical rattles(on the outside) from an aftermarket stereo are all gone. It's also much harder to hear the stereo outside of the car now, so it's not always annoying the people next to you...until you roll the windows down.
