Engine oil ?! I'm really confused

i'm calling for help from EGYPT !
our toyota dealer here sucks and uses low-quality Mobil 1 fully synthetic motor oil 5w-40 ... Engine sound is too high! (10000 km so far):cry:

I DON'T WANT TO USE THAT!!

right now , i'm using toyota genuine motor oil (20w-50) mineral oil .. (much smoother engine now):rolleyes:

(catalog says 20w-50 or 15w-40 multigrade SL)

HELP ME OUT GUYS ...

i'm doing okay or should i switch to synthetic ?
note : Driving in EGYPT is pretty bad! Heavy traffic + short distances + HOT Temp. (40C In summer & 8C in winter) ....

The reason i hate mobil 1 is that it is locally made in Egypt and its got low quality ! its color doesnt change even after 5000 km driving!!!

My (genuine toyota) oil didn't change color after 6.000 km, too. I see no problem there. Mobil 1 FS oils are well known and high quality oils.

well , from what i know , if ur oil doesnt change color , this means its doing bad job in cleaning ur engine interior ...
i guess many ppl can confirm that right?

plus , in EGYPT , its really dusty weather and low quality fuel , (can you imagine changing the air filter every15,000 km?!) so , my oil should be good enough in cleaning engine interior and handling heavy traffic!

I don`t think the Toyota Genuine Oil is bad. 6000 km ain't much and we don't have any heavy conditions here. Car only got 13.000 km so there should not be much residue inside the engine.

U r using toyota synthetic or mineral? cuz i'm really confused ... toyota genuine motor oil is available only in mineral in my country ...

Oil color is not a really reliable method of determining how good of a job an oil is doing. Most folks I know with a Yaris report their oil stays very clean looking for long periods no matter what oil they use.

An oil turning dark quickly may simply be oxidizing and actually building engine deposits, to give an example.

Bottom line: choose any quality oil you like from 0W-20 to 20W-50, change at a reasonable interval, make sure your air filtration is working good and your Yaris will go further than most of us would ever care to drive them!

Either oil should work. I wouldn't worry too much. Here in the US they spec 5w30 and 5w20 for the Yaris, so I wouldn't worry that a 40 weight oil might be too thin.

There's not a lot of difference in your scenario. In a warm weather climate with a car that doesn't have a high performance or turbo-charged engine, the benefits of a synthetic are minor. If you want to use a synthetic for a little more peace of mind, go ahead, but it probably won't affect the longevity of your engine to any great degree.

As long as you use a quality oil and change it regularly, I wouldn't worry.

Exactly. In an ideal situation, you can run a synthetic oil longer than a conventional because the synthetics tend to have a more robust additive package. But, as you describe, you live in less than ideal circumstances in a very dusty environment. That will be your problem. Keep an eye on your air filter and your air intake, making sure all of the seals are good and that there are no cracks or leaks. That will have more to do with you engine's lifespan than the oil will.

But especially keep watch on your cooling system. Check your coolant level regularly and watch for leaks! More engines end up on the scrap heap from coolant problems than from oil problems.

I run Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 that I get for $22 at Walmart and I take my car to lapping days, and I still change it every 2 lapping days or 9000kms, whichever comes first.

My oil has around 8000kms, has been through this past winter and a lapping day, and is dark brown.

It's hard to say, not knowing what's available to you there. Any synthetic oil that's rated "SL," "SM" or "SN" by the API, or "GF4" or "GF5" by ILSAC would be fine.

We got some good stuff ... I think i'll buy my oil next time from saudi arabia (the country in the movie kingdom :-D) since they are leading in oil industries ...

I don't think it does matter if a country is leading in flowing oil. Engine Oil quality depends on other things.

Trust me, changing oil in shorter intervals will have engine longebility and far more better than using long interval synthetics.

Mobil1 is probably a similar formulation world wide, here in Canada i use Mobil1 5w-20 in the winter and 10w-30 in the summer, changing at 10,000kms intervals,

Use Mobil 1. I used Valvoline this past oil change and I'm at 6600 KM and it's already dark brown. I got to 10k last time with mobil 1 with a few thousand kms to go still.

"Multigrade oil" refers to an oil which can simultaneously meet certain low temp and high temp viscosity requirements. It does not necessarily mean an oil is synthetic but 0W grades are usually syn blends at a minimum. It does tend to be easier for syns to meet multigrade standards with less use (or non use) of additives such as pour point depressants and viscosity index improvers.
