Hey everyone.
I just got my Yaris back from the repair shop, not sure how many people saw my other thread (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34620) but in it I got hit by my girlfriend's dad and the damage was about 1,300 dollars. I'm glad to say it's as good as new now.
I got it back Wednesday (been in the shop since last Monday) and today I thought I would try the "Home depot style" lip, made from the garage door weather stripping.
(As seen on page 4-5 on this thread (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27708&page=4) and on page 3 of this thread (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12685&page=3).)
This is how it turned out.
Before:
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/6944/may2011006.jpg
First I cleaned the bottom of the front bumper with some all-around cleaning agent and a rag to remove any dirt that might affect the double-sided tape from sticking.
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/3867/may2011007.jpg
I got some "outdoor double sided tape" and the garage door sealant. The double sided tape worked VERY well...until I ran out. The roll I got didn't have enough so I had to improvise on the driver's side since that's when I ran out. I should have got a bigger roll. :bellyroll:
I started from the passenger's side and I had about 4 inches to go when my double-sided tape ran out, I thought I would have enough but I didn't.
If anyone is planning on doing this the same way I did, get the bigger roll.
Here's the stuff I used. (Weather stripping for garage door (http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardware-Hardware-Fasteners-Weather-Stripping/h_d1/N-5yc1vZard7/R-100125407/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053))
http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/9690/may2011008.jpg
And now some "after" shots: (Sorry, no real DYI pictures, it was kind of hard to get pictures of it while I was in the process of it.)
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/6203/may2011009.jpg
I appologize if you can't see it very well, it was very cloudy today so i'm going to take some more pictures when then weather is better.
Here's a bigger image (http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/465/may2011010.jpg) of the bellow picture for better detail.
http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/465/may2011010.jpg
http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/4818/may2011011.jpg
I think it turned out good. I haven't driven with it yet, so i'm eager to see how it holds up. I messed up on the left (driver's side) of the car, but I don't think it's too noticeable. Overall, pretty pleased with it, I like how it looks very "OEMish"

Nice stuff. Mine has been holding up quite well. Countless of driveways, some debris on the freeway, etc. Although, I did you self tapping screws in addition to double sided tape. Here's its current condition:

I didn't think about the self taping screws, should have probably got those too. XD
I think the outdoor double sided tape should hold, the package said it holds up to 5lbs, but we'll see.

I highly suggest some self tapping screws or drilling holes and using zip-ties. I don't think the tape will hold up against rubbing on a driveway or something. Don't want that hard work to go to waste

It's actually stuck on there pretty good, but I might go ahead and use the self tapping screws just to be sure.
Did you drill any holes before using the screws or zip ties?

Nope, just drilled very carefully. Also used a washer for each screw. I spaced out each screw three inches apart. They don't have to be long either, and inch would be more than enough. Just make sure the screws don't start drilling into the side of the bumper. hahaha

I just read another thread about this and the guy who didn't use screws(or staples) lost his on the first trip out. I'd use some screws...
I actually went to home depot to check out the rubber piece(literally just got back) and they only had the soft rubber seal in black, I want the stiffer one.

Nice job.
Mine has gone through a full Canadian winter and still holding up rather well -- no issues. I did put in a few screws (4 total).

There's a Genuine Toyota part for this in Europe, but I can't seem to find what it is. I ordered mine from a friend in Europe and installed it on my car. It comes in 2 pieces, has the mounts and extra screws/plugs to go into the vacant holes under the bumper. It looks awesome though, and no chance of it falling off.

I had the HD lip (the soft one) and it held up fine, but I used screws as well. It was flexible so it just bent on driveways and stuff if I did hit it. I'd use the screws not so much for bumping into stuff but if any wind gets caught up under that at freeway speeds, it'll be gone quicker than Lindsay Lohan's dreams of getting off her charges.
It has since been replaced with a stiff factory OEM lip. As so:

Well sadly, I haven't had the time to put in any screws in my lip. I'm still debating on if I really need to or not.
So far, i've driven the past 2 days with the lip on with just the tape and i've gone up to about 60 MPH on the highway and it hasn't budged at all.
I think that tape is pretty good stuff, I might not even use the screws, but I might add some glue or something to seal the part that looks a bit dodgy.

I just used double sided tape similar from what the OP used and it is pretty stable. Been driving 60-80 on the freeway and it is still there. I also tested it by pulling the rubber and tape is holding it strong.

Just a note guys. The garage seal posted by our Canadian members is made by "Tago" and carried by the Home Depot's of Canada. The majority (99%) of the US HD's carry that made by "Frost King" and it looks different. It appears to me that the seal used in V2 by Mr White HB is branded "MD" and carried by Lowes where I found it today. It is a harder rubber so I see it maintaining its shape and strength over the "Frost King" stuff from The Home Depot.
Just a heads up that if you want yours to look like what you see here and on other forums and you check it out like I did, be sure to get the right stuff. Me, I like version 2 so I got the MD stuff at Lowes. Now all I gotta do is figure out which way to flip it upside down.....lol.

Also, I've seen people fit this lip on many different cars.

It's a rubber seal, I don't think the paint will hold, and if it does, the second the "lip" bends, the paint will crack.

It's literally a Volvo lip. Comes of the 90 to 93 Volvo 940 and 740. But way more work is involved in it then the hd lips. Plus you need a heat gun. I got the idea from a 240sx friend, very very common on them. Plus you get a lip that looks stock for about twice the price of the hd lip. But....
An advisory to anyone who wants to do the Volvo lip. If you are lowered at all your lip will scrape EVERYWHERE!!! I have about 3 and a half inches ground clearance parked, and I have DF210s. Edit: unless you can drive a lowered car properly

i did the hd lip today it ran me about 20 bucks cause i had to buy two rolls of the double sided tape ($5 each) and the stripping ($10). i think it looks pretty cool but i dont like how i can see the double sided tape sticking out a bit. did i do it wrong?
im kind of nervous about it falling off but i have the screws and washers i just cant put them in because my drill doesnt fit under the car! i have to find time to lift it but i only have the emergency jack.
It's a rubber seal, I don't think the paint will hold, and if it does, the second the "lip" bends, the paint will crack.
with the left over weather stripping, i sprayed all purpose primer and base coat on to it. the foam absorbed the paint and it looks like it could be promising.
http://i39.tinypic.com/28isp3m.jpg
ignore the messy part.. i was bending it to see what it would do but while it was wet and touched it to itself.
ANYWAYS
Im thinking about picking up another pack of weather stripping tomorrow and painting it properly to see how it works out.. but after painting my eyelids, a/c control panel, foglight bezels, part of my rear bumper, and the scraps i painted.. i might need to order another can of paint first.

What kind of tape did you use? I used the heavy duty outdoor tape that is supposed to hold up to 5 pounds, and after a year my lip is still there.
You also have to be sure to use rubbing alchohol on the spot where you are applying the tape so that the spot where you're using the tape is clean and is sticking to the surface of the car and not the dirt under the car.
Post some pictures! Let's see how it turned out.

Is it unique to 2009-2010 HB?
Thanks
Thanks for asking as I am curious also. Part# and pic of it installed if possible.

What kind of tape did you use? I used the heavy duty outdoor tape that is supposed to hold up to 5 pounds, and after a year my lip is still there.
Post some pictures! Let's see how it turned out.
sorry i havent checked yw forums in a few days but i ended up borrowing my friends jack/stands and i got under with the drill just fine. but i used the heavy duty outdoor tape too, i just wanted to make sure it would stay on..
but heres the final product + a plastidipping of my bumper lol

im actually way more satisfied with the hd lip than i thought i would be. i thought it looked cheap in pictures but seeing it in person (and on my car) it looks awesome.
oh and for anyone that was wondering, when i tried color matching the hd lip scrap, it didnt work. the paint cracked after drying. cheers!

Just curious, is there any mileage advantage to this or is it all for looks?

Looks mainly...I put one on my bumper to protect it from hitting shit and getting scratched again.

Im thinking about doing this because the previous owner of my car took the lip of my yaris up acrost something HARD! nice and scuffed under there and the factory stock lip had 3 screws missing. (sure hope it didnt happen when i loaned my mom my car for the day :frown: ) either way I need a cover up and this looks like it.
Thanks

I gotta be honest, I don't know the part number. I will do some digging though. I know it isn't exclusive to hatchbacks, or the '09+s but the reason I ended up with an OEM stiff replacement is because my car got hit on the front with the original bumper and HD lip that I had installed on that.
When I got the car back from the shop after the bodywork, it had the stiff replacement lip, so I sorta scored the OEM for free.

Thanks, man
Now you have a moral obligation to find the shop technician who worked on your car and torture him till he tells you where he got this thing from (serious issue considering no aftermarket lip is available for 2009-2011 model)

guys the streets of brooklyn are tough i avoided a drunk driver and hit a monster pot hole or dip in the road whatever it was has ripped my little stock lip thing off so i want to do the hd one. from looking at you guys it just screws into the holes that are there already and maybe some extra 3m tape, and it should be fine correct?

That 3m does not wanna hold to the rubber. Gonna drill small holes and do the zip tie route I guess. Can't figure out the best way to position it so that it would look like a legit lip.

**Not Slow Speed Internet ready -> a few pics**
This is my "Home Depot" Lip DIY Version 2.0
(1 long garage door seal cut it half and sicked together upside down)
http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h453/mrwhitehb29/VitzHomeDepotStyleFrontLipDIY008.jpg
I used Double-side tape with plastic door trim cut flat and sicked it to the bottom of the lip edge to stiffen it.

Test Fitting to see how it looks

DIY Front Lip complete. ... I wonder though if vinyl lettering would stick to the rubber ... if it can maybe I will add a cool vinyl sticker to it.
I took the idea of this new style Lip from here:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1526863 (Credit goes to NASIOC Fourm user Mobutusan, for Front Lip Version II)
See where my Falkin logo is, I'm thinking of blacking out the white area there with black matte vinyl ?!? make the front look more agressive, what you guys think?
Next Project... DIY "Home Depot" style side skirts... might try paint the rubber as well, maybe plasti Dip spray paint will work!?!
What size rims are those?
