Tire Wear

What is causing my front tires to wear like this? Are the tires crap, do I need new struts, or is it something else?

also, are you rotating them every 5k-10k miles? looks like normal front tire wear to me on crappy tires that havent been rotated. Maybe gone a few hundred miles below 30psi before rechecking?

Check your pressure. It kinda looks like underinflated wear to me. Not that I've ever personally seen that, just guessing.

Thanks for the replies. It is a 2008 yaris with 40,000 miles on the car. I bought the car used, so I am assuming the tires also have 40,000 miles on them. Both of the front tires look worn like in the picture, however both the rear tires look fine. It has been a while since I have rotated the tires, maybe a year ago. We only put several thousand miles on the tires/yr. I have religiously filled the tires with air when ever the tire pressure warning light comes on. The tires are Good Year Eagle LS.

OK - the Tire Pressure sensors come on at around 17psi - that's about a half of the recommended pressure. if this keeps happening (clue is in "every time the light comes on")
This means you are running probably 80% of the time with seriously under-inflated tires.
Cure: Go to a tire shop and replace the fronts with the same tire as is there now, or replace all 4 to match. And make sure that there is no slow leak, which you obviously have now.

I agree this looks like an underinflation issue.

It appears all the "strange" wear is at the outside edges. From the photo it appears the rest of the tire is wearing well. If those LS have that much tread left after 40k you are doing well otherwise. Most people who have them can't seem to get many miles out of them. Fix the leaks and or replace them.

Also (at risk of getting lambasted), try running closer to max sidewall pressure and marvel at the improved mpg, better wear and improved handling!

If you wait until the light comes on to inflate them, your waiting too long. The light is just letting you know that something is wrong and you need to get it taken care of. Alot of people with a Yaris, depending on the tire requirements, set their PSI to about 34 for a near stock setting and a pinch firmer than the usual 32 PSI.

Consider the tire pressure sensors like idiot lights. They only warn you when things have gotten so bad that it's often too late.
Soon, we will have sensors to tell the driver when the windshield is dirty.

Slowly but shurely, cars are being designed for complete idiots, the exact same people you do no want on the road! Can't park a car because your driving skills are ridiculously bad? Tha't's OK, we have a car that wiill park itself.
Can't add 6+6? That's OK, we have a car that wiil do that for you.....

don't buy more Goodyears though, buy four DECENT tires and start fresh. make sure to rotate religiously

Goodyear LS;
Any reason is a great excuse to dispose of them. Quite frankly, they're crap. And 40,000 miles is well past their normal life expectancy.

Ours had 40k on them too and were about 4/32" of tread depth left. That was close enough for me lol

Yeah, the G-LS are about the worst tires I ever got with a new car. I could not get rid of them fast enough.
I replaced them with cheap, Yokohama "Avid-TRZ" and even those cheap tires are like night and day better than the LS.

Ahhh - you never had an early Yaris with the Bridgestone RE92 tires. THEY were even worse..... I was so glad to see the '09 came with GoodYears, and they were much better. Honest!
