finish sanding is always recommended for the best, smoothest result.

oh okay thanks so i have 2000grit on hand.. will that do the trick?

2000 is more of a polishing grit, I don't know if it's enough to knock down small bumps/pits/scratches/unevenness. I would use 400 or 600.

Sorry, not a painting pro here -- maybe someone else can post up about prepping fiberglass for painting.

2000 grit is for finishing, you don't really need more than 400 grit to rough up the surface and get the paint off (if there was paint previously)
