Texas Longhorns fan?
Looks very nice!
Also, I notice that the 'main' color in the center console is orange, with the exterior trim white, and you did on the door sills the same with the main color as orange with the white accent piece as well. Looks very balanced out like that.
Good job!

Looks good finish wise...the colors aren't for me, but that is not important. I thought about getting into the same project but the pillar moldings would bother me, then I'd end up painting everything. I didn't want to open that can of worms.
P.S. whadya get in the mail?? ;)

Are you using vinyl dye? I can't imagine being able to preserve the texture of the surfaces with standard spay paint. Looks good!

What kind of prep, and what brand paint(made for plastic, etc?)? The finish is really great...must resist urge to buy paint...the hardware store calling my name.

all i did was spray it lightly with some cheap walmart brand spray paint for the white, and the orange i used krylon for plastic, and i didn't even clear coat it, cause i didn't want to be blinded while driving

This is amazing. I bought spray paint from walmart too, but didn't achieve nearly similar results (I tried without sanding, but got bubbles/drops/blemishes, then I sanded and painted again, but when trying a second layer the paint again clogged up into bubbles instead of an even coat. More sanding and trying again...and eventually I got it black, but with a rough and uneven coating). It was a glossy black spray, and it said usable for "everything".
Did you pick one that was specific for plastic?
ttr125fan09
07-15-2011, 11:00 AM
nope, just regular walmart spray paint, but you need to do extremely light coats, i was driving with out the center parts and floor center console for like 3 days, i did about 5 or 6 super thin coats.
i did get some bubbles in some places but i just sanded them and redid them

Could you guys maybe make a quick little tutorial on how to paint the interior orange/white and/or red like this. I wanna do this to my yaris too but im kind of a beginner with painting. I dont know too much about paint and sanding and such lol.

1. sit in your car and think about how you want to paint it, remember its your car be creative
2. start pulling off the panels that you want to paint, be careful not to break any clips
3.give the panels a good wash, and let them air dry, you dont want lint all over your prepd panels
4. start out with a couple of light coats of primer, just make sure it can be used on plastic
5. let it dry
6. now on to your color of choice, once again several light coats
7. let it dry
8. if you choose to use clear coat for a shiny finish do so, i didnt, i wanted the matte look
9. let the clear coat dry
10.start putting your panels back in, and enjoy
also if you want a shiny finish without clearcoat, you can also use gloss paints, i used flat paints

the paint idea is pretty cool guys, i would love to do blue to match my black and blue interior. also the homemade Tac mount is a great idea. i was gonna actually drill a hole in my "behind the stering wheel" glove box.......but i use it a lot.

thats the only reason why i didnt drill into my glovebox behind the wheel, i use it too much

dude, i wanna see some pics of that custom tach when you finnish it. it's a smart place to put it, cuz if you put it on the door pillar it's to far away from our clusters in the center.

i just painted my center console with my left over bayou blue metallic and clear coat i used for my eyelids. im not good at spray painting so it looks like crap. im waiting until daylight to see if i like it or not. :(
http://i39.tinypic.com/2mcit1y.jpg
im going to have to sand it down and start over, the finish it terrible. but i like how it could potentially look!
oh, thinking that everything in the dash was just "pull apart" i stupidly broke the clips for th a/c controls so a firm push on the AC button and the hole knob will fall through... so dont do what i did.

Very good looking man, please tell me you atleast used adhesion promoter though?
Did you make sure the clear had UV protection, considering most off the shelf stuff doesn't.
If you just straight sprayed it, it's only gonna look good for maybe 2 years before it's time to re do it. Lack of adhesion promoter will cause it to peel once the UV starts getting at it also.
Also, RED scotch brite is the perfect thing to prep plastic. Gives it enough bite for paint to stick to, but small enough texture to fill with paint.
Seriously though, ALWAYS use adhesion promoter, it replaces primer and is made for this exact application. Primer is not adhesion promoter, it's to help the color stay "true" and fill minor imperfections.
