Well the wife is having a baby (due oct 29th) and I am seriously considering selling my yaris to buy a larger car. She has always loved the prius and wanted one (no idea why I think they are ugly but cool in a technical way). Has anyone ever owned one and has it been a reliable vehicle? I'd really like something that can seat 3 people and a baby that gets good fuel economy because I plan on taking some road trips in the near future.

I have a friend, he owns a Prius, he is very happy.
His flow on the highway 4.5-4.7 liters per 100 kilometers.
Do not forget that in Russia, we have kilometers. and liters.

theres a few recalls depending on year, but we dont see many in the shop for stuff breaking. there seems to be more peripheral issues (ie: stereo, nav, etc) that can be very expensive. I just priced a central screen/nav unit for an 08 the other day. exchange was like 800 bucks, new was 5000!

moral of the story is: decide how important the frills are to you. mechanically they are good cars

I figured they were mechanicly sound because used parts are cheap which means they are not in high demand, on ebay a used trans is 600 used battery pack 500. How many battery packs have you guys changed out there?

1 or 2 tops. ever. (Im assuming you mean the HV batt). the small battery is about the same as any other car.

Believe it or not, we have changed FAR more HV batts on Ford diesel hybrid busses, if that tells you anything about the frequency of toyota hybrid issues!

I've researched and besides a few people reporting burning a qt of oil every 5k miles they seem to be pretty reliable. Do you work at a toyota dealer?

sure do. assistant parts manager (generally work the mechanics counter, so I see pretty much what goes on in the shop). We havent seen a lot of excessive oil consumption issues here.

I think I finally found the prius I wanted its an 06 pkg 2 115k one owner with a full service history. I have never worked with a dealership so helpful and willing to go the extra mile.

We have several regular customers with 100k+ miles, and a few over 200k with very few issues. just like with anything else, keep up on maintenance and it will do well.
The only expensive issue we have seen is gen1 prius cats going out (which could happen with any older car).
