Taking the Amsoil Plunge

Well I have decided to take the plunge and give Amsoil a shot. I was going to go with a Royal Purple filter and the XPR oil from RP however procuring the filter seemed like it was an online order only product. So for grins I decided to look up Amsoil dealers near Montgomery and got a hold of Bill at All Pro Cars in Prattville. Bill is quite the proponent for Amsoil and seriously scoffed when I mentioned RP. He was involved with NASCAR for 30 years through the 70s, 80s, and 90s. He pretty much staked a replacement engine to me even that the Amsoil filter for the 1NZ which is rated for 15k miles IS viable up to that distance. I am not going to test that distance however I found it interesting how adamant he is on the quality of the product. He even offered to give me a discount on the oil and a filter from Amsoil. I am picking the stuff up this evening and will be performing my change tomorrow afternoon. Since I am not actually racing he said that I would be fine with the Amsoil filter however if I was to actually race the car and be particularly rough on the motor then he recommended WIX because the flow on them is better designed for the type of application like racing. Now I am sure there can be all sorts of discussions on this however his opinion mirrors my uncle which has been dealing with high performance auto applications since the early 60s. The one thing that I do find interesting is that Toyota calls for 0/5w-20 and Amsoil recommends the 0/5w-30.

why is amsoil a plunge?? i love how they dont use detergents on their motor oil and the tranny oil got rid of my previous car "celica" 2 and 3 gear grinds.. was told i need to swap tranny but ran into this thing which fix the problem for a lot less cost..took 3 weeks to settle and completely fix the grinds... yaris has been on amsoils after 10k..

well I haven't ever used it before and do not know anyone personally that uses it so I have no first hand knowledge...so it is a plunge ;)

Can't go wrong. Been using 5W-30 in mine since I got it and change it every 5000. Amsoil is all I use in my bikes except for the Norton.

Been using Amsoil 0w-20 for a while now. My vendor suggested that I use MANN filters instead of Amsoil oil filter just to be safe (replacing every ~7500 miles.

Also, aren't you boosted now? The 25k mile interval is for "stock" NA cars. I think for "stock" boosted cars, it's 15k. No warranty/guarantees are given to any modified cars, I think.

I am actually glad that I am trying Amsoil this time. The guy that I purchased from is life long friends with the inventor of Amsoil Al Amutuzio. They were in ROTC together in Duluth Minnesota back in the early 70s. I even got to see a pic of them standing on the flight deck next to a plane. It was pretty cool. The guy provided me with a bunch of testing literature proving how much better Amsoil is in comparison to RP. He did state that if you plan on racing with your car to not use the Amsoil filter, but go with a WIX due to a much higher flow rate that would be required in that application. It was an interesting evening for sure.

Well I definately believe Amsoil oil is superior to Royal Purple oil, I'm just not so sure about that filter. The RP filter that I got was locally sold, and the testing they have done on it sounds legit. Of course, they are the ones that tested it....the filter is said to last 12,000 miles before a change, so combined with the Amsoil oil, that's one filter every 12,000, then complete change at 24,000 miles. Sounds good to me. I'm not so sure about how the Amsoil filter adds up, but I've heard nothing but good about the WIX filters for sure.

I still won't trust changing any further out than 5k personally especially being boosted. The Amsoil is 25k miles and the Amsoil filter is 15k however I would be hard pressed to really believe a company would replace a motor for an oil warranty.

I have been using Amsoil since the Yari turned 1,000 miles in all 3 of my Yari . I employ 10k oil and filter (Toyota) in all 3 as well . My buddy employs 20K oil and filter changes on all his heavy duty trucks . Your boosted Yaris should be fine with 10K changes .

Amsoil sells kits for around 25 bucks which includes the shipping and analysis for you. I am thinking of becoming a dealer once up home. There is currently only 1 dealer in northern Maine and he lives in the sticks. I can tell you that the oil performed awesome this weekend while at IA. The car ran really cool and super quiet. The only way that peeps could tell that I was boosted what when they heard my blow off valve and of course when I left them in the dust :thumbsup:

Hmmm , wonder if an UOA is on the Amsoil website .... We use BLACKSTONE LABS for our used oil analysis for the YARIS . Very pleasant and helpful . Here's their website , http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ . They'll send you a FREE kit . If you do decide to get a sample , try to get it about half way through the draining of the oil from the pan for best sample . Is messy , but worth seeing the results . Here's the U.O.A.s for our YARIS , http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34674 . Plan to do a few more U.O.A.s for the '08 sedan , 1 in the fall and another in the spring of next year . You also may want to get a T.B.N. , that'll tell how well the oil is holding up . Especially for 10,000+ mile intervals .

What I would like to do is obtain 3 samples . #1 of my 10K oil change , #2 of off the shelf , unused conventional motor oil and #3 a random sample of a oil change at a local Jiffy Lube . Label them A,B, and C .

Should be interesting .... Welcome . It's about $45 a pop for a U.O.A. with T.B.N.. So , can get expensive :frown: . Would be interesting to see the results . Can become addictive :smoking: .
