The cluster lights (tach, speed, o etc area.)
I started my car this morning let it warm up 10 or so mins.
Got in turned on my head lights and when I put the car in reverse to leave the drive way BAM there went the cluster lights on the dash.
I thought WTH..
I reached down on the left side dash area where the dimmer switch is for the cluster lights and it was all the way up (full bright) I turned the dial down past the notch grabbing part where it starts the dimming process for going dimmer and dimmer too off and it came back on.. I turn the dimmer all the way down and its dark and start the dimmer up and it gets brighter and brighter but when I go past that notch bump area for full brightness it goes out again.. Any one had this problem????

A few months ago some peeps here on the board were having trouble with the headlight switch. Maybe that is your issue also.

Problem solved after I went to the dealership.
I must have hit the switch cleaning the car.
Apparently all our Yaris' all shut off the cluster lights when you run it all the way up.
From the day I purchased the car it must have been on the full dimming area up and not past that little notch area.
Even though our cars have a picture on the damn dial that shows the more up you roll the roller the brighter it gets and then a picture that shows the instrument panel lit up, must be wrong.
I guess everyone can go try it and see.
Turn on your head lights roll the roller up and watch the dimming console get brighter and brighter and then go past that little notch area and when you’re expecting to see the cluster panel be its brightest it cuts off.
Some cars, when you get to that point and go past the notch it will turn on the dome light. And apparently what ever car they put that system in and the dome light comes on and it kicks off the cluster panel so you can see it when your driving at night with the dome light on. Is all i can figure.

I still thisnk you have a problem...
See the attached file, it's a section from the technical manuals, it should be at full nighttime brightness, after the wheel clicks, not off...
Sounds to me like the dimmer rheostat might be the cause of the problem.

I also think you have a problem, i will check mine tonight, but the owners manual says the upper position will illuminate the gauges, and not dim them when the headlights are on etc.. (read it yourself)
also try another car at the dealers to see if it's the same..

Same here.. i keep mine at full lock (UP) position, and they are always on max bright, day or night.

I swear, I am almost convinced i saw it go out when i was backing up. But they had me almost convinced other wise when they brought that other car around.. I dont think i am loosing my mind..
Thanks

ok i went and checked mine and yup, when you go passed the indent on the scroll wheel, the cluster does GO OUT, and the area for the trip meter goes full bright, so it is acting the same as yours, i have a sedan, and live in Canada. This function is for driving in bright daylight, since you don't need the gauge lights, but want to be able to see/read the trip/fuel meter. NORMAL!
I notice Chris07lb, has a hatch, maybe there different.

I have a LB U.S.
I always leave mine in the position past the little notch, it leaves my clusters on full bright when head lights are off (which is pretty much never), and then dims when turn on my headlights. I had always thought that it was to allow maximum visibility during daytime when glare on the glass could pose a problem seeing the cluster, but at night it dims to prevent the lights from distracting or causing any kind of vision hinderance at night. Afterall, the more lights in your cabin at night the harder it is to see out, and the cluster is def. visible at night without the brightest setting. So have i been wrong in my assumption?

What makes you say as if you know for sure?
Do you work for Toyota?
Please let us know so we can put this to rest.
See, I have a sedan and I'd pretty much swear mine worked all the way up too.
I am pretty sure that it was working like that and went out when I started backing out of the driveway.. I saw it go out.. What if the sedan has some sort of defect and they are going out? I may go to the dealership and get them to check three or so sedans and see..

My liftback stays at full brightness when its all the way up.

Sedan: When my headlights are on and I go past the "notch", the speedo turns off and the lcd clock/odo goes full bright. I use it that way at times such as rainy days when I need lights on and it is light outside as well. The speedo is easy to see most all the time, but it helps to see the dim lcd display.

Without lights on the liftback, we have no speedo. There's nothing to see but a needle. That's why the difference.
