Rutt Row.
26 months and 26k miles old.
Did anyone get this but not have a total failure for a while?
Coolant level is now and has always been "FULL"
Cant see anything around the water pump.

Take a mirror and angle it down to where you can see the inside of the waterpump pulley, bet it's pink and crusty in there. You do have the tell tale sign on the hood however.

I felt inside the wp pulley butthere ws no crust there. Im wondering if this could be stable for a lobg time?
Or will it suddenly let loose?

id go ahead and start saving up now if your going to take it to someone else. Or just buy the new water pump and get it over with now. Its obviously leaking.

As much as I cannot stand anyone else monkeying with my car its under warranty until next spring.
It seems though I have heard stories about new (Toyota) pumps failing too. Perhaps I should go with after market?
Also I work with engineers diagnosing complicated devices used in military and space appplications. (they design it I build it) So I am used to thiniking out of the box on things. Like: the splash looks old and there isnt a lot of it. Perhaps it just leaks a little once or twice and then it stops?
Thats why I want to ask others: is failure inevitable at this point?
Also I just drove 10,400 miles to Alsaka and back in 16 days. There were lots of days I was going 80 mph all day for 10 or 12 hours.
Maybe that has something to do with it?

My 07 HB let go at just under 15K the beginning of this year. I replaced myself with a Toyota pump from a online discounter. Did the thermostat and fluid change at the same time. I think the issue was part my fault in that I might have overtightened the belt adjustment after replacing my pulleys. I'd clear the issue up.

Now that I think about it in Fairbanks AK last month before leaving for home I changed the oil and checked the air filter in the Walmart parking lot there. I also checked the hood for tell tale water pump stains.
There werent any.
This has happened since then.
I know people have changed pulleys etc and the thought is perhaps this has something to do with the pump failing?
For the record I have no different pulleys and the belt has never been touched.
And in my (35 years of) experience Ive never seen a maladjusted belt cause a waterpump to leak.
My 2 cents.

pump failure IS NOT caused by afteermarket pulley/s as i am testement to that with factory pump and 50K still going strong. Toyota has a problem with once again outsourcing parts and this water pump failure goes beyond just yaris models....

I was thinking that. Toyota water pumps used to last 150k miles or at any rate more than American cars did (typically 50-60k) My Mercedes 240Ds pumps failed EVERY 60k miles almost to the mile.
Thats why I wanted to ask if the aftermarket pumps are lastsing longer? I guess Im going to have T replace it cause its under warranty.

I hope that my statement ref pulleys brought this on. My only thing was to point out that because I put them on and maybe overtightened the belt that I may have contributed to the failure so therefore I repaired myself. All is well.

Awesome!
Now...two questions.
If it fails OUT OF WarrANATY, how long is the repair covered for?
I assume if its warrantied for 100k miles they fix it free no mstter how many times it fails?

which is why i made my statement of aftermarket parts not being a contributing factor....

just to clear it up water pump is covered under powertrain warranty
which is 5yr/80k mi or 60mo/100k km
if it fail while its still under warranty the dealer has to change it no matter how many times it fails unless they find something that would cause it to fail prematurely
which they would have to prove it
if you change it through the dealer after warranty parts and labor should be covered by at least 12mo/12k mi
the main problem why alot of newer car parts fail in due to the higher use of recycled material

not sure in the 50th state but in the 49 other's its 5 YEARS/ 60K for POWERTRAIN WARRANTY....

Sheesh thats scary! Got 94K miles on all my 07 Yaris and no problems with anything but the accessory belt itself, Replaced it myself and HOPEFULLY did not over tighten it. Also replaced the same belt on my parents 2006 Toyota Corolla.

Worry not. Its faulty parts not handfisted home mechanics.

When you cleaned up your hood did the problem re occur ?
What did the dealer say was wrong.?

Clean the hood: Good Idea!
Just found this out yesterday. Dealer is blissfully ignorant.
The splash isnt a whole lot and Ive heard it said this leaking can be an intermittent thing.
So Im in wait and see mode for now.

I decided to bring the car to the dealer to have the wp replaced. Warranty issue. Will drop it off tonite, have them replace it tomorrow, and ride my motorcycle to work.
Then its wait for it to leak again and research aftermarket wp s in the meantime to see if they are better or not.

my 07 sedan has the spray on the underside of the hood from when i bought it at around 60k miles. it now has about 72k and the coolant level is still holding. i think it does spray intermittantly (sp?). i plan on running it until it starts making noises or leaking noticibly.

Yeah thats my suspicision also. This possibly could be an intermittant thing.
But if it fails in the middle of winter or on a trip that would be an inconvience I would not want to deal with.

Got my car back from the dealer and the water pump is replaced free of charge. But guess what? The car isnt making that little squeeky noise anymore! I noticed it a month or two after I bought it new. It happened infrequently but I KNEW I heard something. Its the kind of noise you tell other people when they have one: Just drive the car and dont worry about it.
It did happen more and more to the point that on the Alaska trip I heard it constantly.
So whatever is causing these waterpumps to fail, in my car, came right fromt the factory.

My first pump lasted 30K. Second OEM unit spritzed a bit after 1,200 miles. It's been periodicly spraying for 10k and I'm at 40,000mi. now. Debating if I want to roll the bones and leave it. I have an AC Delco pump on deck ready at a moments notice!

Had the same squeal on my xD and was able to pinpoint it to the water pump. TSB for coolant leak and abnormal noise. Part number change from original.
