Does K&N really work?

in regards to the K&N drop in replacement filter, does it really work? i've researched online, and a lot of them say that it does let air flow better, but it does not filter as well as the factory paper filters. is it worth it to us Yaris owners?

I have tried it out.If you use the replenishing kit, it will be ok.

However, the gains are not that many...You can't feel the difference!

i had a K&N filter on my old car, not the drop in, but the cone type. it made a bug difference (40-80 more miles per tank). i did have to wash it at least twice per year...is it worth getting the drop in for my Yaris?

ive used a drop in k&n on two different cars with little to no difference (except a $60 to $15 price difference).
ive used a ring type k&n filter on a carburated engine with excellent results

I think from my own experience is the filter only makes a difference when the filter is the only thing between the air and the engine. any airbox / or other assembly makes more of a change.

I used to have a really good link where a guy tested all sorts of different air filters. It was a very scientific test with very expensive equipment.

In the end it showed that while the K&N flowed more it also allowed a lot more dirt through.

Also when you have a MAF sensor there is the possibility that the oil from the filter will contaminate the wire on the sensor and cause all sorts of problems.

No thats not it. The test I was talking about used scientific type testing procedures. But its pretty much the same idea.

Um, a CAI offers the same quailty of filtration as a K&N filter...

you still wash it every 6 months or so and it still has the same cotton fiber filter material. the HKS ones are a sponge type.



chaging it now or later will render you in the same place...

yes, but with the complete CAI, there will at least be some hp gains opposed to the drop in. but i still don't know if i will get one or not. i had a short ram on my GTI, and i didn't like cleaning it often...

IMHO

a CAI and a short ram will need to be cleaned more often then a drop in K&N and the K&N will still have a virtual HP gain just like the CAI and short ram...

i did some online research, and i think it said that the drop-in does not really give any hp gains...

most hp gains are in the design of the airbox not the filter. stock airboxes are designed to flow enough air to keep the engine running but keep noise levels at a minimum.
