So, it looks like the SE model, which is the sporty version, will have a tach. However, the base "L" model doesn't appear to have a tachometer again. Interesting.

According to Motor Trend it will only have a tach in cars with the 5 speed manual.

So long as all 5-speed models get a tach, I'd be OK with that.
I like the look of the SE better (different gauges, front/rear bumpers, spoiler). Wonder how much it'll cost with a five speed?

Even the automatics should have a tach. We're talking 2012 here, not 1995.
Toyota has clearly taken all the cost cutting measures possible to maintain this price point. It sucks for Toyota to have to compete on price against cars built buy Mexican and Korean factories with much lower wages.
A little off topic but...
Toyota actually made a statement when asked why the new Yaris carries over an old weak engine and 4-speed transmission (Accent has 138 HP, 6-speed, and direct injection and a cheaper price!). Toyota simply stated that newer tech would have made the price increase not worth it to buyers. I assume it would carry the premium of the Honda Fit, perhaps.
Also of note with the SE model, are bigger changes than the 2nd gens S model got. The SE gets stiffer suspension, disc brakes in the rear, aggressive side bolsters in the seats, ect. At least it's not just styling changes, but real performance enhancements. However, no power bump.

Regarding a tach in an automatic L or LE: Since they put one in the SE automatic, could I order one from the dealer and get it put into my new LE 3 door? Thanks.

I think if the cluster doesn't come with a tach it should at lease come with a temp gauge. Then I again I think all cars should get a temp gauge b/c I really don't understand how the temp light functions...or reads...

I'm still a little peeved my 3 door 5 speed manual didn't come with a tach. I've been looking around for one I like but haven't found one yet at the local parts places. I hate ordering on-line, so I'm still hunting.
Every manual trannie vehicle should have a tach and a temp. gauge.

In the UK market the basic Yaris does not have a tach at all, just a speedo and a digital fuel guage IIRC, it's toyota cost cutting but what you got to remember is that Toyota is charging £11000 for a basic Yaris, a lot of money for a small car in the UK market!

The missing tach is the one thing that has disappointed me with the Yaris too. As for finding one you like - online *really* is your best bet. The models available in retail outlets are far too limited and too large.

i am surprised to hear cars made without a tach, my 2007 yaris is the basic model and has a tach. but in truth in automatic, the tach CAN be left without and still be acceptable whereas the manual is a no for me

Eh, about $17,300 USD for the stripper Yaris. Is that including the rip=off "VAT tax"? Here it's priced at $15,1xx, plus tax, title, licensing, etc...so about $16,200-ish. About 10,301, converted back to British Pounds. So, we pay nearly a "quid" less than you for about the same car. That sucks man.
I would love to drive a little Pug 206 or Renault Twingo. I like the style of those two little Frenchies.

I sent an email to Toyota's customer service about the possibility of a tach making its way into the 2013 (or even 2012 1/2) 3 door/automatic/L/LE Yaris. The reply was "we don't have that information on future models" which I thought a bit strange. If they don't, who would?
Interestingly, they also said "try the aftermarket, as there is a large aftermarket demand for it", which again, ought to tell them something and give them a little kick in their behind to give us all factory tachs, and not cut us automatic-but-tach-lovers-anyway out of the equation.

I also was disappointed that my Yaris did not come with a tach. So I installed my ScanGauge II where most people would expect the dash speedometer to be located. The SGII gives me speed, RPMs, engine temp, and mpg. It can also give me the error codes if the check engine lite flashes. I downloaded the Toyota-Yaris computer codes.

I looked at the fact sheet I received with my 2007 Yaris sedan (Canadian model) and under "Equipment on all Yaris models" it says "Instrumentation: Tachometer".

In Canada, the packages/trim are quite different fom USA, the 3 door hatch only comes in CE trim, which has no tach and nothing powered.
The 5 doors only comes in LE (1000$ more than the 3 doors CE) or SE, the LE has standard tach, power door locks and mirrors. For 1000$, the extra features and doors are worth it imo, and for another 1000$ you add cruise control, air conditioning, keyless entry and power windows, with the convinience package.
So, the 3 door canadian version is really for an appealing price more than anything else, I don't really get why it's not available in LE trim...
It reminds me the Civic hatchback CX, which was as comfortable, well built and powerfull as any other civic, but had really nothing fancy.
Otherwise, it's cool to know what rpm you are at, but it's not really usefull, my first car (geo metro 1998) didn't have one and I didn't mind, you just have to hit the redline once to know what's the limit.
Anyways, I'll wait a year or two to get a yaris, not only my civic is still fine but they will probably fix some small issues and have end of the year sales. In late 2009, a yaris 2009 (base trim) was sold 2000$ under msrp, which was quite a nice deal, but Honda did better (-2500$ on the Fit, which my mom bought).

They find somehwere to cut on newer models to keep the price low. The 04-05 echo hatchback (Canada) had standard ABS, while the 06-10 Yaris didn't have it standard...
