has been a dream with very little to spend on it and hope fully will continue

My question is i have been driving fine all day and i have not noticed anything
different all gears changed fine until i pulled in to park at home NO REVERSE
its like the place is there but i cant keep it engaged it just pops out !!!

hold it in the reverse position release the clutch nothing.

as this is my only for of transport at the moment any help would be appreciated
Thanks

When the car is off, have somebody shift around to different gears while you look inside the bay. Make sure the linkages are all moving correctly (or at all) and then see what happens when it goes into reverse. If the arms move, and it still doesn't go into gear, theres something wrong INSIDE the granny. If nothing moves.. then something is wrong with the linkage. (This is just how I would troubleshoot)

thanks for the quick reply thats what helps keep these motors rolling

ok i can still select all forward gears when trying reverse there is resistance and very little movement in the bay ( but there is movement )

Sounds like its something only a shop could diagnose..

Hmmm, 11 years old. Does the tranny still have fluid in it? Might be a ridiculous question, but it's gotta be asked.

did you ever service trans?
drain to see if fluid is full of metallic particles
if it is besides of normal wear n tear if any signs of metal chunks drains
then best to shop for a transmission

It's possible the cables are worn, or the bushing for the end of the cable at the transmission is worn and not pushing the arms far enough.

It's also possible the linkages are dry. Have you tried lubing them up? You can also pull the cover off the inside around the shifter and check to see that the cables haven't popped out of place. One philips (star head) screw at the back in the single cup holder and just pop the front out by pulling up.

so reverse works when its cold, but doesn't when its warm? is this usually how it goes? or is it intermitting?

is there a possibility you could make a video so we can hear any sounds and see where the shifter is when it pops out? may help a bit with diag

I am really leaning towards the cables though.. worn bushings maybe?

ok
this is the senario
monday did 50 odd miles start stop reverse fine at the end of the day pulled up tried reverse nothing.no sound, crunch judder switch off try to put in reverse the selector resists and pops back into nutral.
tuesday morning started car selected reverse fine drove 10 miles selected reverse couple of times when in traffic fine get to work NO REVERSE (damn) push into a space
left work reverse fine, drove 10 mins no reverse !!!!

there are no sounds and the car drives forward with no problems although worried i may loose forward gears

I have only been able to check under console there is no adjustment on cable nothing loose well lubricated will change oil in gearbox and report back

again thanks for all the help received......

Another thing that could be added, is it possible that the clutch is out of adjustment? Maybe the clutch isn't fully releasing, causing the problem going into reverse? Just an idea...

^ It would grind the gears like crazy if the clutch wasn't releasing. But good idea.

hi all
I Have got it soughted after a days slog

thanks for all your advice and tips

it was the cable (bast...d) I rang a gearbox company who we do work for (electrics) just for some advice and didn't speak to sales but a young techy he said we have had in a couple of yaris T sports and they were diagnosed by recovery GEARBOX similar problem.no reverse or some times no reverse 2nd or 4th. They then dropped the gear box out to find the cable due to heat from the manufold which was were my cable had been resting for some time has disintigrated the outer housing.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When the car is cold the centre core moves freely as it gets hot pushing the centre core freezes up but as you pull the centre for 1st 3rd and 5th it works fine. Having said that those gearboxes were replaced.
J-parts were also helpfull and said the tranny was unlikely to fail but cables go.

with much desire to get the car on the road a second hand cable was fitted £120.00
for both. new ones are £172.00 each damn.

Thanks for posting that update! Have you determined how to keep the cables off the manifold so you don't have a repeat? makes me want to go check mine now...

there are 2 cables one longer ( rests on manufold ) one shorter close to bulk head
it seems a bracket or clip of some sort should be there to hold the longer one from the manufold.

I have used a metal cable tie to pull the longer cable to the shorter one as a short term measure but i will look at some sort of bracket as a fix.

I must say not the greatest of designs but for a 10 year old car not bad going.
