Wanna go lower than my coilovers allow :/

I am fairly new to the yaris in general. I am coming from the miata world where my cars lowest point was about half an inch off the ground, so I don't need to be told how impractical having a super low car is, or the dangers of exposing parts to damage or prematurely worn out shocks. I am going into this fully aware.

That being said!... I recently purchased some tein basics and installed them. They are all the way down all around but I am quite a bit disappointed with the drop... I know for the rears I could probably just remove the collar set up all together (it'd basically just be a tein lowering spring with the tein shock. But for the fronts, removing a collar isn't going to give me much more of a drop.

Is there anything similar to a recessed top hat that can be purchased for the fronts so I can get that extra bit? Can anyone recommend a way to go about this? The suspension set up on the Yaris seems... odd... to say the least coming from dual wishbone all around on the miata. I'm not sure how to approach this.

Coils aren't the way to get all the way down to 1/2" on the Yaris. Especially Tein Basics. Those are some of the softest coils on the market for our cars.

The suspension setup on the Yaris is pretty basic. As far as I know, even Megan, D2 or Tein SCs are not going to get you 1/2" from the ground, cranked all the way down with the collars removed. The car sits so high stock that you just aren't gonna get that low without cutting a serious chunk out of lowering springs or just biting the cost and going to bags.

If you're trying to go the 'stanced' route, there are several VW forums for that. :drinking:

All that said, if you decide to ditch the Basics, let me know. I'll put 'em to some good use. :biggrin:

Hmmm I have Basics and my car is one of the lowest on the site..... :)
But I work at a performance shop that specializes in SCCA cars so our head mechanic did some work to them, im at about 3.2" front and rear drop wise on Tein Basics! I still can go almost 1 more whole inch on mine. Megans you can set your frame almost on the ground but you cant drive it that way.

Look up Saggio's ride, he's about as slammed as can be on coilovers, maybe get some inspiration from that :)

Don't get me wrong, all, I'm not trying to get to the same height as I was with the miata, I just can't stand how high it sits while it's still bottomed out. And I'm not trying to knock on you guys but three inches off the ground isn't "slammed" at least in my opinion. That's more than enough room for dodging most obstacles. It's just how you go about it that describes the practicality of the matter. :D

Anyhow... I did know that the teins were soft going into this, but I also was hoping for a bit more drop like the basics in the miata world. Mistake on my end, I know.

How feasible would it be to cut and reweld (by a professional fabricator that I know) the knuckle mounts on the front shocks a bit higher up? That would allow me to maintain travel and essentially just lower the chassis point, right? Am I all wet with this?

O, just a few numbers for reference. With these all wound down I am at 12.25 fender to center hub in the front and 12 fender to center hub in the rear. The OEM bumper is 6 inches off the ground still! -_____-;;

totally agree on the hieght of this car.. it just seems soooooo tall.. After looking at Jason's H production car running against crx's and civic hatch's, Yaris looks like a bubble compared to those in a race.. just looks wierd.. but it was impressive how fast it was.

Its the shape of the body thats making this car look tall to me.. the roof is made for alot of head room for every shape and size of passengers. What size rims and tires are you using?

I cant say for sure about the knuckle mounts relocation. Not that familiar yet

Rims are the OEM steelies and it has 195/55/15s. Soon to have Rota Zeros (I know, I know) in 15 with 205/50/15 azenis.

REally you want to drive I5 and I405 slammed daily.....:bow:......most functional way to get low with it is bags....got a guy in Burien who is a retailer for them and will get you a good deal.

Lol I am completely slammed all the way on Megan and had 15" wheels and scratched the bottom of my car on every bump on streets and speed bumps my car would get stuck lol

Believe me, I table topped my miata more than once where the chassis was on the ground and I had to rock the car back and forth to put the rear wheels on the ground and get traction.

Tein Basic Coilovers modified to go lower, my bumper is about 1 1/2 inch off the ground, as i stated i have one of the lowest Yaris's on here without having a lip kit or body kit either like most of the guys do, im 100% stock body! :thumbup:

my brand of coilovers allows the shock body to thread all the way through the spindle

if I did that, the bottom of the car would be touching the ground

as it is, I've got tuck all around (with me and the GF in the car) and in the front I could go ALOT lower (like inches) , in the rear I could probably go another inch lower
