Wonder if it states 0w-20 or 5w-20 on the oil cap for the 2012 . If anyone gets the chance to look at one take a peek under the hood to see if it remains 5w-30 and get back to us . Thanks

Not me. I'm really not fond of that flat sided bumper (amongst several other details).

The 2006-2011 Vitz quickly became a car with cult appeal. The 2012 model Vitz has absolutely none of that. Pity.

I only drove it around the dealership lot. I wanted to take it on a real test drive, but I had to be at work in 10 minutes. :frown:

Storage bins gone. Generic styling. Glad I bought an '11 before it's too late.

But I do wonder if Toyota fixed the throttle lag problem and the electric steering problem.

I forgot to note that this is the base model and the sticker price is $16,000. This car didn't have power windows.

Oh jeez in all the excitement I forgot to ask the most important question of all:

Have they increased the weight? Have they made it bigger?

traveller

Compared to the Mk2 its 100mm longer and the roof height is less. Don't know about the weight though.
That dash looks like something from the 1980's!

Found the weight on Toyotas site. Its listed at 2295 which is unchanged I believe.

The problem with small cars is they get bigger over time. I saw a Honda Accord in the showroom last summer with a sticker that claimed the car got 16 mpg.

If anything they should get smaller/lighter/smaller engine.

There was a nice photo I saw somewhere on the internet a long time ago, that compared an 80's Accord and a late model. It seems that the modern Civic is much closer to what the Accord was originally, and likewise can be said about the Corolla/Camry relationship. I guess these new models (Yaris/Vios/City/Fiesta/Mazda2) are stepping in to fill the void.

It's typical Western ideology (having been born and raised in the USA); bigger is better. And just like shopping at Costco, it doesn't always come with rewards. Often times shopping at Costco, I would end up with a bunch of unconsumed spoiled produce; or waste.

I for one, am very happy that the Yaris didn't get much bigger. I only wish that they spent a little more time on a more interesting interior/exterior design.

NEITHER, you should know us being blacksheep of toyota family we get the tired 5w30 with 3.9 quarts..... :frown: . We're using SHELL full synthetic 5w-20 ( SN/GF-5 ) in the '08 sedan and it's quite quiet . I'd say about the same noise level as the PENNZOIL ( Y.B ) conventional 5w-30 . The SHELL full synthetic 5w-30 before this oil interval was a tad quieter . Do you have access to the updated chart for the approved oil weights for all the TOYOTA models ? If so , what weights are acceptable for the YARIS ? The Canadian chart shows 5w-20 and 0w-20 are fine for the 1.5 ltr.. Thanks

I like my 2010 model year better. The 2012 doesn't have the cool center speedometer!! Also I think the body looks better on the older ones not the 2012. It is okay though, just not as good.

I don't like the exterior but I guess I'll get used to it, the interior is fine. But I'll have to test drive it, I don't expect to find many differences.

They get bigger and more poorly built. Otherwise, you could think that a 2012 Civic will be the same as a 20 years old Accord (which is true in terms of size and weight), but the quality of the materials, the sound proofing, comfort of the seats, and even room, is not quite as good as in an old Accord. I would love to have a brand new Civic VX (EG), they looked good, they were light, had fair performances and awesome fuel economy. There wasn't much room though.

But you can find some decent mid-size/small cars for your familly, like a Prius, which is the size of a compact car but almost as roomy as a Camry, and light enough (at least it would be without the hybrid system).

Saw one at my dealer the other day. The plastic area where the wipers sit has been cut off at the ends instead of all the way across. Not a fan of the hood thingy to lift it up, felt awkward. For some reason they went the cheaper route with the cover over the spare area. On another thread I made note of the whatever holder in the door panel. After sitting in it it wasn't an issue. I did like the fact that they included a seal at the front edge of the engine compartment where the hood closes. Still the same motor pulling what appears to me to be a heavier car. (appears to me)...Not sure but I think we don't get a 3 dr version so it is not in my want to have list.

IMHO the 07-08 3dr HB will be a very sought after car in the future. I just hope they sold enough of them for wrecking yard parts down the road.

The first yaris sedan came about 8 months after the hatchback, it will be the same I guess.

Should we have the prius C here eventually?

test driven twice now, one an auto the other a manuel. The single wiper are picks up a terrible wind noise at freeway speed-right off the tip on the passenger side. Huge oversight on toyotas part not fixing this and yes, the wiper arm really is off a truck-it's not a custom made part for this car. dash plastics look like scattered confetti in the grey light grey parts-not attractive or low key at all. Really, they should just change the name to scion, 'cause that's what it is, basic non intigrated radio and all. The engine and tranny is as the last yaris so the oil weight is still 5w30-I looked. The car has lost a lot of its character and gained nothing-oh, it gained out outside temp read out in the odometer cluster. The gauges are very generic and the auto has a noticably missing tachometer with a blank in it's place on the base model. Apparently the SE rates for a tach and is only available in an automatic. No reason I can see for this "yaris/scion" to replace my 08. I really think they borrowed the dash from the Scion TC and dropped it this baby.

Although I think we all unanimously have a strong distaste for the 2012, I think we should begin to be respectful of 2012 owners, in the best interest of keeping traffic up on this forum.

However, I am 100% against censorship and being too sensitive about not hurting people's feelings. I think we can keep it fairly open, eliminating statements like, "your 2012 sucks!" Nobody has posted anything like that yet, but I think that this point of view is worth posting. We already have enough childish bickering between sedan/hatch owners.

the SE can be had in a manual, as can the L s door....just not the middle trim LE in 3 or 5 door or the 5 door L.

the mass seller will most certainly be the 5 door LE. i never thought id see the day when the yaris' bulk seller would be one of the lower rated subcompacts mpg wise.

i sat in an LE 5 door yesterday. as someone described, the tried to give the dash some type of textured look, but it looks like it has these front to back lines and some type of shredded paper texture.....very cheap looking.

even though the interior is a massive step up from the previous gen (which imo was one the cheapest interiors ever put in a car), it is still a massive step behind any other subcompact out there.

they had the '12 model parked butt to butt with the '11.....the average person wouldnt know the difference. they did so little to the rear end. it barely looks like a refresh, if that.

but, i like the front alot better than the '11.

I'm not wanting to hate on the 2012, so I won't, but I am fasinated with how interiors appeal so differently to people. I absolutely love the interior of the previous Yaris. It is a simple low key design that never reflects glare on the inside of the windshield on a sunny day-this is a must for me and a total oversight by so many manufactures. The corolla and camry also have no glare dashes. Hard plastics can creak a little when cold, but the trade off is durablity and ease of maintenance over a soft dash. The new Sonic, Fiesta, and Fit have very bad glare/reflection on their dash boards which fatigues the heck out of me on a long trip on a sunny day. I'm not wild about my poka dot interior, but the synthetic seat material never stains-everything wipes off-though I have noticed sun fade on this material in used Yaris hatchbacks if their windows are not tinted. I guess what I like the most about the previous Yaris is that it's different, but thoughtfully put together in my opinion. The car was never really for our market and I like the differences over any other car in its class. The new Yaris is nice, but in a different way and I feel it resembles a 90's Tercel more than I'd like. oops, hating on it again, and what's up with the nose of the car looking like it's got a runny nose-too much droop in the grill work-SE avoids that with cross lace grill work. Did not realize SE is available in manuel-Thought the Toyota web site only had the SE listed as an automatic.

i actually think the new yaris is an ok looking car and we know it will have great reliability. i just feel it is competing at a price point that will be rough for toyota.

the one i sat in was $17k and wasnt even the se model. i just cant swallow that primarily because so little was done to this model over its predecessor.
