View Full Version : a question for those with tinted windows...

greetings everyone: for increased comfort and security purposes, we are planning on getting some mild window tints. however, my wife loves how quickly the rear-defogger works (in comparison to my old civic and her old avalon). the question is: will tinting the rear window adversely effect the rear-defogger?? will defogging times slow down, or will the defogger cause unsightly bubbles?? thanks for any experience and input you guys can provide. oh, is there anything we should be looking for when browsing for tinting shops, such as warranties, materials, etc...??

I've heard that some metal tint films can actually aid a defogger by conducting the heat across the window better. But this is what I've heard... don't take my word for it!

most tint shops have lifetime warranty on work, if installed properly there wont be any bubbles, i have worked as a tinter in past and never had any issues. It will not have an adverse affect on the defrost, never heard of it speeding it up but it makes sense since a good tint does contain metal, not dye. You will not have any problems, find a shop with lifetime warranty on thier work, most do.

I have the cold weather package with the defogger on the rear and my rear window is tinted.
If it makes you feel any better, I havent seen the ground this month (it has snowed that much) and I've had the rear defogger on pretty much all month. No issues here.
Get a warranty JIC... even if its a few extra bucks. I used mine already!

hi everybody, i'm working for my dad, we own a window tinting shop here in Georgia, and Please DON'T BELIEVE LIFETIME tint, because there is no tint that is last for life, they said LIFETIME that actually cost you about $50 to $60 dollars more for that, the tint will last for about 10 years the most. Any other questions feel free to ask, i'd been working on window tinting for 5 years now.

On your Yaris the most expensive you will pay for your tint job is $140 to $160 dollars the most, we used Solard Guard the same as 3M will last for at least 10 years. Don't pay for anything more than that or else you get jack.

oh if you have a Yaris 3dr lift back, the most you pay for that is $140 dollars that it's, if you have a sedan then $160 dollars is the most.

ok, i have to speak on this. I have tint done at Xtremetint in California. Cost is in the $100 area with high quality 3M tint that will not turn purple, bubble,or fade. they installed it perfect no bubbles, but the guy told me not to use the rear deffoger. It has a Lifetime warranty. Lifetime in reference to the "lifetime of the car." Considering that people get rid of thier cars after a few years anyways, thats why they say lifetime warranty. double check with the dudes. I was advised against it.

You can use your rear deffoger with no problems, i am really don't see anything wrong for not use your rear deffoger. I had more than 40 peoples in my family including aunties and uncles and nephews cousins.... more than 40 cars, all different brands nothing wrong with the tints we used at all, we kept our cars for more than 6 years almost.
Again Solar Guard, Protect Guard or 3M is the great Brands. but none of them will last for Lifetime.
The tint will last for about 10 years if you use water to clean on the tint or soap and water mix together, not Windex or any Other Chemicals out there that said SAFE FOR TINT, it's not at all.

And one more thing, 3M is very expensive brands i dont see how they did it for your car for a price of $100 dollars.

BTW i pay my window tint for $160, because the tint was sliver (use for windows of office bulidings) not black , and an extra $20 for one foot wide sun strip (usually they only do it for 6in wide ) (black) total for $180, is it too much? here u can see the big 12in wide sunstrip.
3113
i'm quoted at $290 for all my windows (except the front windshield). the back 5 windows is $190, and the front two are an extra $100. i'm planning on 15% on the back 5 and 50% on the front 2.

California tint prices should be pretty cheap seeing as how it is almost a necessity in that relentless sun... everyone tints their windows.
$180 is a little bit pricey. $290 is fucking crazy... tell that guy to jump off a cliff.

they're using the tint that's not dyed film. i think it's 3M. do you guys know of any other place in Sacramento, CA that is reputable and doesn't use dyed film? and how much is it usually to have all but the front windshield tinted?

heh, yeah, maybe. but yeah, i just got off the phone with another shop near by (next city over), and they quoted me at 199.95 for the back 5, and 300 bucks for all except the front windshield. and they told me that they use carbon based film. that shop is rated at 8.8 while the other shop that was talking about earlier, Eclipse, is rated at 8.5. so i think i will just stay with Eclipse.

Surely there is some one out there that does tint at a resonable price. It cant be because its SMF could it?
Maybe some one here on YW is familiar with your area and knows someone. I drove 70 miles for mine. It was a nice fun drive too.

That is your city code where you live. Your weather station does not use three letter codes for your city on their map? Have you ever flown?
It is your city code.

I haven't noticed any issues with the rear defroster.
I have Madico Onyx-20 ceramic based film, on the rear glass, and it works as usual.
Mind you, the temperatures here do not go below -10 C, and I park indoors usually so I don't have "gotta scrape" frost accumulation on the rear glass.

nobody talks with city code, not behind "chi" :)
SMF doesnt mean anything, but the actual city would give everyone a good indication of whats goin on.

does tint with metal film (right?) affect any electronics? i'm asking this because the other shop i asked mentioned that their carbon-based film will not interfere with the electronics...

your right.. its habbit for me.. just a faster way of typing too.. i did it without thinking. while i was typing i thought of it as an abbreviation.. but its not.. (it is to me) but not to most.
so being Sacramento, CA may be a reason for the over pricing...

I have read on tint forums that the metal based films can degrade radio reception. That is in vehicles with the antena in the back glass.
I have metal based film on my sedan with no noticeable change in reception.

i have metal based tint with a glass mounted antenna, with no issues at all. In my S10 I did have trouble with my car alarms receiver, it seriously reduced the range that i could remote start or disable the alarm.

Hmmm.....just a question ~
What is the Darkest legal tint allowed in US or where ever you are?
Australia is 35% ~ I was quoted $249 for my tint.......(Mind you.....that's in Australian dollars).....that's for all the windows except the front and I've booked in and getting it done in March ~ That's the cheapest I have found and he showed me the tint and stuff ~
Can't wait for my Yaris to get tinted ~ It's white.....but still gets quite hot >_< ~

the us tint laws are broken down by states, so there are 50 sets of differing laws out there! CA has one of the stricter front window laws, requiring 70. since most manufacturers dont even make a 70 tint (most stop at 50), pretty much anyone with their front windows done has an illegal tint. the rear tint here has no limit, so darken away!

like static808 mentioned, the front windows cannot be darker than 70%, which is basically nothing, and the front windshield cannot be touched except the top 4 or 6 inches. i'm not sure what $249 AUSD is in USD.

249.00 AUD Australia Dollars = 193.724 USD United States Dollars
