2011 SEMA Show: Toyota Yaris B-Spec Club Racer
The 2011 SEMA Show will feature the debut of the Toyota Yaris B-Spec Club Racer at a press conference in the Toyota exhibit in Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. It is the first race car built for competition in the U.S. from the next-generation 2012 Yaris SE.
The Yaris Club racer will compete in the SCCA B-spec class race category in 2012 with Action Sports Star and BMX legend Jamie Bestwick behind the wheel aiming to qualify for and compete in the 2012 SCCA National Championship Runoffs, held at the famed Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wis. The seven-time X Games champion and former Dew Tour Athlete of the year will be on hand to talk about the Yaris B-Spec Club Racer at a Toyota press conference.
The Yaris B-Spec Club Racer was built by SportsCar Magazine utilizing an all-new second-generation Yaris SE three-door hatchback. It demonstrates how the all-new Yaris offers a cost friendly avenue for amateur racers eager to gain experience in SCCA wheel-to-wheel racing. The Yaris B-Spec Club Racer’s livery also pays homage to Toyota’s 1998 LeMans pole-winning GT-One race car, as Toyota celebrates it return to the famed racing series next year.
With the right size for drivers who need an agile and functional vehicle, the all-new 2012 Toyota Yaris Liftback features sporty styling, outstanding safety features and improved fuel economy.
The all-new Yaris features a remarkable attention to detail in the design and engineering of the vehicle. From its smart, interior design and quiet, refined passenger cabin to its responsive driving dynamics, the 2012 Yaris answers car-shoppers’ demands for a no-compromise vehicle.

Yeah... You know even after your proof a press release, marketing guys have a knack for inserting incorrect things. The car is an L (3-door) with drum rears. No matter, the rear brakes are just along for the ride - we still have the original OE rear shoes on the H Prod car after two seasons. The wheel stand from SEMA last year said our car was a 5-door.

For those that don't recognize it, we again chose to pay tribute to a past Toyota racing car, the Le Mans GT-One entry.
Interestingly, this was done with no knowledge of Toyota's plans to return to Le Mans, merely a nice coincidence - or as we like to think, we inspired them.

Really good looking car, really nice paint scheme. I'm still looking for my first Yaris, but this gives me some great ideas. One question though, does this car have a STAR system delete, so the electronic grannies don't interfer with the track performance?
Oh yeah and will these same mods work with the older cars as well?

There isn't a single SE manual in California. Toyota's site says they make one, but you can't "build your car" with it.

They should be here eventually. When we picked out this car it was one of only six new cars in the states, and it was the only manual - kind of made it an non-choice.

I doubt that cage will fit the older car, the new chassis has a lower roof. And this one was a rush job, I took them the car with no interior, so I don't think they took any measurements.
Lap timer/data/driver coach for Jamie. http://www.rlcracing.com/track-commander-auto.htm
Before we started the project Jamie joked that he wanted to be able to listen to his tunes while racing. So I relocated the USB/audio link from the glove box to center console by the e-brake just to have some fun with him... It just doesn't seem to work so well without the rest of the audio system.

If he can't find his way around we will get an in-car radio system so we can yell directions at him.
But we don't anticipate any problems... He has a good deal of experience racing. He did a four day Fast Lane Racing School before competing in the Toyota Celebrity GP at Long Beach. He has also done the Mustang school at Miller Motorsports park, and spends some off time road racing a sport bike.

Different class, different rules. One of the staples of the new Yaris is the new interior, we certainly couldn't take the best part of it out for the show.
So what if you can land a 360 barspin. Let's see what you got in turn 1 on cold tires.

Funny you should mention GPS, as it is now the system most race sanctioning bodies are looking to convert to for timing and scoring. We (NASA) have been working with Track Mate timing systems at most all of our tracks to build a data base for switching to a GPS timing system in the very near future. At this time we are using an ABM transponder based system with a timing line cut into each tracks start/finish stripe. One way we have been able to use the GPS, is for real time performance testing of our spec class cars, finding out who might be pushing the limits on power to weight and such things!

The shorter roof line should help at fast tracks. The nose also seems to be less square, so more air should go over the car, instead of under it. Added bonus is the longer wheelbase, which should help stability.
On paper the new car looks better to me. We will find out in Jan.

Having not yet seen an aftermarket lightweight hood we put the stock hood on a diet, cut 9lbs 2oz out of it. Also removed the OE hood latch assembly from the car and replaced it with AeroCatch locks.

We pulled the plug on our BS program right around SEMA. Toyota had no official interest in the class, and the lack of a firm rule set was also a disappointment, so we went to Prod.

Totally understandable, now that Grand-Am has come on board maybe there will be a firmed up set of rules very soon. I still have interset in the Class, but it would have to be with an early car, say '07-'08 for cost reasons. I hope it will fly, just to get back to more of the good old fashion econo-box formula.

We were surprised that no one noticed that something was up with the Yaris at SEMA... The transformation was already underway to Prod, and a lot of the parts on the car and many listed on the wheel stand are not BS legal parts.
We only have the one season (that we know of) with Bestwick in the car, and we wanted to make the most of it, had we gone to BS we would still be waiting on final rules. Instead we already have three races in HP.
The more groups that adopt the class the slower the process gets, everyone has an agenda and thinks they know how to put on the best show, so it slows the process. Additionally we are already seeing manufacturers changing up BS kits, so in response the others make tweaks. Frustrating. We completely pulled a 180 on our kit, and submitted the most basic stuff we had access to. It started to seem like a waste to spend a bunch of time on R&D and to spec an expensive kit, when all the of cars are going to be slowed down so they don't run away from the Fiat.
If you have any hope of running in Grand Am I would not buy a Yaris. Toyota is not planning to buy in, which is required by GA to play, so you wont likely see the car classed over there. The Yaris will be legal in World Challenge.

Sadly the 2012 program is coming to an end. Toyota does not plan to fund a 2013 race program for a Yaris, and the damage to the car is far to extensive to even consider a repair without factory support. Shortly it will take its final ride to the crusher. Such a shame.

One very sad looking 2012 Yaris was dropped off in Torrance today, destine for the crusher. :frown:
The upside is I now have twice the garage space, which makes the wife happy, and I should have a lot more free time this year.

Recently got the Oct 2012 issue of DSport, includes DVD27, which has some great coverage of the Toyota Trading Places event we did with Andy Bell and Jamie Bestwick.
Here is a pic from the 2012s last ride. :frown:
