Why do so many posters (and on several M/C forums I post on) obscure the numbers on their license plates when posting pictures of their vehicles on the internet?

I mean, when you drive the vehicle the whole world sees it anyway....

What are we trying to avoid by doing so?

I always thought it was cause if you had nice parts you wouldnt want people spotting you based on your plate and stealing your stuff......

In my old forum we had a warning about ppl registering just to see the ipgrades on teh cars so they could spot them and get info so they can rob your things....so most people protect against it, specially on audio threads

I've taken pictures off my Facebook even, that showed my plate (Autocross pictures)

I recommend censoring the plates just for security reasons, people in town will know its yours if they have something against you who knows what they'll do...

One girl who was on my facebook, got a job at a gas station, hooked her friends up with some gas let them drive off, she called the cops and reported my car driving off without paying for gas. Thanks gas stations who dont have cameras. She got blocked real quick and the police dropped the bogus report.. My car had been sitting on E for a few days.
The cop said she was super descriptive about the car, which was odd because it was during rush hour, what gas station attendants pay that much attention at that hour? Just be weary is all.
