View Full Version : Stickerbombing dash pieces!

has anyone else done this? I did mine today because of the paint splatter. i've been slowly trying to get it off but the paint is so robust i'm doing more damage to the plastic than the paint specks! so for now i sticker bombed them and my wink mirror. someday i'll find new dash pieces and keep them on the side.
stickers have been applied, mod podge is slowly making its way on there now :D

"Stickerbombing"? So that's what they call that... Didn't know that anyone came up with a term for that...
Should look interesting when it's put back in the car.

It's alright, i was most likely going to do it sooner or later anyways, lol :D
I'm surprised it didn't work as well myself. Turns out nail polish remover seemed to do the best in the long run, but it discolored the plastic pretty bad(worse than the mineral spirits were). it did take it off the wiper stalk with no harm, though. difference in plastics, i guess. I'll get new dash pieces sooner or later and have a regular set too.
They'll be back in the car tomorrow morning, and possibly the wink mirror as well. gotta figure out how i'm going to mount it without drilling any holes, if I can.

how did you do that ? it is just sticking the stickers here and there so you cover the whole area ? did you use some clear coat afterwards ?
thanks
please post the instal pics

yeah, it's just putting the stickers all over it however you feel like, I'll take some close up pics tomorrow also. some are overlapping, some are right next to each-other. if you look close you can still see some black plastic under too. I even cut some up to get it just how I wanted.
Afterwards, you coat the stickers with a clear acrylic adhesive / sealer / finish. I use "Mod Podge" which can be required at pretty much any store that has a craft section. (i got mine at micheals arts and crafts, but Walmart carries it also) It comes in a spray can form, and brushable form. this time i used brushable. if it would have been a larger flat piece i would have used the spray can.
I used the Matte finish, as a friend of mine who did his used gloss, and i wanted to be a tad different. both end up with excellent results. Mod Podge goes on white, but dries clear, so don't freak out, lol.

Suffice to say that MS is all I use on my plastics when it comes time to remove and re-treat with the UV stuff that I use. Never had an issue. With that said I am currently pondering getting a few new pieces and doing a paint or carbon fiber on them.

I wonder if the discoloration i was seeing was the uv protection being removed, and a little bit of the paint smearing. the Kleen Strip was working, but i stopped because i thought I was staining the plastic, lol.
anyhow, it's pouring rain and I'm trying to convince myself to go put these in before i have to go get my windshield re-sealed. Dang Oregon....

Yep, i used "sticker bomb 2". you can buy the first and second one at Barnes and Nobles, and I'm sure other bookstores as well. There's probably lots of other books with stickers like that too.
I'm thinking about doing the cup holders next, and possibly the little item tray in front of the shifter.

Hey, look at that. Four coats of Mod and a razor blade to cut the stickers i pushed into the lock button housing (after it all dried) so the lock could function freely, and it's done! thinking about carefully cutting out the other accessory covers so i can add things to them in the future. i almost drilled a hole in one and put a switch in it, but i opted not to in case i go another route when i need a switch.
Pictures of it in car soon!

I haven't pulled my doors apart yet, but likely doing that tomorrow. Ebay sent my speaker adapters to the wrong address and now it looks like i spent money for nothing, since he wont respond to emails. >:( Guess i'll just remove the stock speaker from its enclosure and modify it like i did for the rears.
but yeah, most the pieces just pop right out, the cupholders were a bitch. there's a chance i'll do the upper portion of the door's arm rest by the cup holders, but I'm not sure. running out of stickers, lol. gotta go buy the other sticker bomb book.
Lol Garm, that would be interesting. Don't know if i could handle that, though :p

Dadams - Rit Dye. get a big tub that you can completely submerge parts into, and dye them. it will never chip or peel or flake!

yay, 4th coat of mod podge is drying.
Also, in case anyone is wondering about removing stuff like this later on in life, it is very simple. the mod podge actually makes removing the stickers easier, since it strengthens the paper. it wont rip leaving the stick and half the paper down. it comes off with that satisying *pop* sound that happens when it all comes off clean :)
I'm wondering about either dying or replacing my headliner with a black one, or removing it and re-upholstering it. if i re-upholster it, i'm thinking black and red checkerboard. I've never done a headliner......anyone have any insight on that?

been sick since i got home from vacation so i haven't done too much to the gnar gnar, but i felt up to it so i pulled my front end apart and removed the tow bar attachment that was left. 26 pounds of un-needed steel! Allthough, after thinking about it, that bar is probably the reason i am driving the car today. It most likely saved the car when it got in the wreck. there's one piece on the passenger side that still needs to be removed, but the whole being sick thing made me not want to do it. i'll get under her soon and pull it. it's only like 2 pounds of steel lol.
Pulled a few more pieces to sticker bomb today, and got my hands on some wink mirror mounts! Expect pictures tomorrow of a mounted mirror and more pieces :D
Also, for Garm if he's following this at all, I'm working on something to make covering the whole car easier! Any luck finding stickers?

OH MY GOD THIS SUCKED SO HARD DON'T EVER ATTEMPT THIS SERIOUSLY.
The bandana is in, but it still aint in the car yet. that was quite possibly the most annoying thing ever. had to but little tiny slits in it and tension it on the clips, then keep juuust enough on the edge of the console while clipping it in or it just fell out. Hell if I know how i'm going to get it to stay on the shift rod how i want. that rubber boot sounds better and better by the minute.

here's some pretty lame pictures of the wink mirror. To much glare, ignore my hand. my camera went full retard if i didn't block the light. It's mounted via two windshield mounts. vibrates a little bit at idle, and a bit while driving. no more than if you had it mounted with the brackets. gotta put my sun visors back in sometime. will take more suitable pics when i can.

Should have nabbed a large shifter extension from Garm while I was down there. Kind of want one for my other shift knob.
Tomorrow if I remember when I get home from work I'm going to pull the plastic surround from the third brake light and bomb that. I need to install a relay on that anyhow, i want it to blink when i press the brakes. Anyone know which side of the car the wires for that are on? I'd rather mount it anywhere else other than up by the light itself.

I uh, got wheels yesterday so the piece i am sticker-bombing right now got put on hold. it just needs the Mod Podge put on and it's ready. been searching for the best price for 195/50/r16 tires. (and lugs)
anyways, phototime. third brake light go!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120119_183336.jpg
You can get vinyl sticker paper for a regulas printer, youll just have to trim any blank areas around what you print off.
Sign shops should be cheap too, did the 10x10 square foot total of decals on it for right at 100 bucks, and that was installing too.
If theres anything simple you want, I might be able to crank some out in my computer art class.

Having trouble deciding which of those fabrics to order! debating between the "geisha grey" and "ocean fun". Think they're going to be wide enough? I'd like to try and do it in one piece. i was thinking of ordering three yards, that should be more than enough to cover the headliner lengthwise at least.
I'm at a standstill right now! I have no more stickers, i haven't ordered the carbon fiber yet, I don't have the fabric, I need more ideas! Waiting on my tires for my new wheels, waiting on taxes so i can buy seats, coilovers, and a steering wheel...... i need more stuff to do to the interior! Ideas plox.
the next pieces to get stickers are: steering column, interior liftgate handle, possibly the dome light and book light plastics, they might get carbon fibered in the future, so i can sticker them now i guess... Debating what to do with the sun visors. Don't know what to do with the ohshit handles. the kickpanel plastic might get something as well as the lower floorboard plastic. A, B, and C pillars are up for grabs as well....
Also - send me stickers! If you have any laying around that you'd like to donate let me know!I'll even put them where you want :p

44" wide is just wide enough for the headliner.

Wont he want alittle more to cover and tuck in corners, or fill any lips or raisings?
I havent look at the headliner in the yaris, but I know I had to get wider then the width in my truck to fill areas sucj as under visors.
If you want Im going to make a digital sticker pack for my yaris lower lip and possibly my salt flat rims if I get them. If theres any design or saying youd like, Ill try and give you a file and you can run to your sign shop or print them off. I have a few Im working on now Ill post wen I get a chance.

44" gives about 2" of overlap on the sides. It would be nice to have a bit more, but at least he can do it without seams.

my new (used) wheels are sitting in my living room - waiting for my tires to get here!
My spikes just came in! I can De-badge and move my front license plate now!
Sometime in the future I'm going to powdercoat these - probably pink. I'm not the biggest fan of gold but for the price I paid I couldn't pass these up. thats not curb rash, it's on the rubber. the have a few nicks here and there but its mostly paint that came off.

Originally I was worried about people bumping into them and or taking them, but lock-tite ought to help with the later of the two. Debating painting them as well. going to leave the first two unpainted and see how they hold up.
If someone bumps into them and screws up the liftgate, that's all the more reason for me to speed up the process of buying the fiberglass / carbon fiber one.

Also, they're a few pounds lighter and i can feel a slight difference in acceleration which is always a good thing. yayyy, tinkering today with the car, might as well post what I did. Talked to Jeff today about my getting stuck in reverse issue - suggested i adjust the shifter cable, but i couldn't quite figure out how. so while i was in that area of the car...... I ran my amp's power cable! Don't worry, it's not plugged in battery side, yet. I made a small hole in the heater hose grommet, and fed it through there, then zip tied it up out of the way, and then down through the center console.

then since I was bored, i started cleaning the engine bay up a little bit. removed some of the nasty electrical tape and other wire shielding, and replaced it with the loom. also removed all the foam on the hoses, it was stained and blotchy. then i went over a majority of my wiring and removed all the excess plastic clips and organized / routed it, and started replacing the wire loom that was bad. i need a lot more.
tomorrow I'm going to remove the bolts for the engine cover, and start sanding the valve cover down to remove the spots. then a quick spray of engine bright, a splash of water, and some tire shine to prep her for the warm weather of hoodless driving! (and then the fiberglass hood from garm)

That looks good, man! I just removed my engine cover the other day and now I realize that it doesn't look as good as I thought it did.
Maybe I need to tidy it up as you did.

popy costa from micro-snausages!
Bye Bye 522's, Hello D2's! I was kind of torn about that until i mounted them. They fit perfect! almost flush with the fenders. a little rolling and moar low, and it'll be tuckin' like mad.
clean clean clean. gotta get some strong cleaner to do the insides, looks like a CV boot tore and flung grease all around one.

Wired my sub in the rest of the way, and it turns out it's blown. so....no sub for a while. just picked up a 300 zx that has a 8 inch bazooka, thinking about putting the 12 in that, and the bazooka in the gnar gnar. will post pics of the new car in here maybe.
also brought the Gnar to a body shop to have the front end looked at, they guy was very reluctant to say anything other than "we need to do an alignment" so....will try another place.

Ok! mini DIY carpet removal - sub install - currently covering sub in stickers!
Heres a starting picture, i undid the rear seat belts at the bottom already, oops! you have to remove there to pull the carpet.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_102823.jpg
next we undo the seats! Don't forget to unplug the sensors!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_103123.jpg
lookie, sub wiring. we'll get more into this part later. begin wondering how you were able to drive with this much dirt under your seat. contemplate cleaning seats.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_103018.jpg
remove the bottom part of the front seat belts, now. 14mm just like the rears.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_103246.jpg
start gently pulling up carpet, careful now!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_103251.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_103451.jpg
annnnd, don't forget to unbolt the gas lid lever. i did! :p
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_103457.jpg
Pull the rear vent things, too!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_103641.jpg
Ok, now that we're up to the front seat area, be careful! there are little plastic clips holding your carpet in. So pull the running board plastics off, its pretty easy. gently pull up from the back, and pop! out they go.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_103840.jpg
now pull gently, and out comes the carpet! yay!

Eww. gross........now is when you start getting unhappy.
especially if you aren't the original owner of your car. Dog food? Cereal? YUCK. start audibly cussing at the PO of the car, so neighbors can hear. this part is optional, but highly recommended.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_103937.jpg
begin finding things you lost previously, like dampening adjusters.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_104013.jpg
Start getting aggravated even more, this is gross, i swear i would never let my car get - hey, is that change? SWEET!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_104128.jpg
pull foam stuff and Styrofoam pieces, pull the styrofoam gently. it could break! Assemble stuff you found in neat little pile.

Use one of these. Everywhere.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_105602.jpg
Next, we grab our favorite cleaner. I like this stuff. SCRUB LIKE THE FATE OF A CIVILIZATION DEPENDS ON YOU. Get to your level of cleanliness. I ran out of dry weather, so i hurried.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_105557.jpg
Use the shop vac again. maybe even a third time. Put seats back in.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_114447.jpg
Apply floor mats. These came from some sort of jeep. Friend works at infinity, and they were going to throw them away after servicing it, guess he replaced them with weathertech or something.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120501_114456.jpg
thats that!
Now onto my sub install, quite pleased, i must say. Going to be covering this in things, maybe even stickers! Who knew?

I've never used a real bazooka tube until i got this one out of the Fairlady, I am super happy with it. Fits the yaris well, since I like the clean look, no amp to be seen!

most of the interior is back in now, too. all that's left is to cover the headliner, and it'll all go back in.
and, now for today's update.
Was in a good mood, so I started tinkering with the Gnar. :)
Painted my oil filler cap. Best piece I've painted so far, I'd say. Came out perfect.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120514_162034.jpg
Re-located my license plate, looks ok I think. Might move it, not sure.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120514_161342.jpg
Installed this switch - seems the Kenwood head unit I have likes to get stuck on "reading" instead of playing my Ipod every now and then, and the only way to fix it is to unplug the stereo. Installed this switch on the 12v constant, so to reset the stereo in case of said issue, shut car off, flip switch, restart car :) I'm trying to figure out what causes this issue, wondering if it's my Ipod, or if the little surge of power it gets when you start the car is the issue.

Fun day. Oh, I rotated my tires too(hooray?). Tried re-installing my fender liners. No go, guess I'll have to custom make some.

how about some copy pasta's from MI!
Welp, I've been slacking. still haven't finished the pieces I started the other day. I did however, put some stickers outside, to make fun of a certain crowd of people, lol.

There's a blue lowered Yaris HB around my area too. dark tinted glass and dark wheels. gotta find the guy. I have competition ;_;
so, i ripped my middle tie brace out. here, have a pic.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120618_195526.jpg
easy enough to spot where I hit......wait...that's not normal. this bolt wont come out?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/vash_the_stamepede/IMG_20120618_195535.jpg
hey wait....that belongs on the frame! so yeah, there we have it.. no more center tie brace for me! lol.
also - I removed my rear perches today to level out the back of the car a bit more, and i see this. was i supposed to mount these on top of the spring, not on the bottom? I noticed that they seemed to sit in there at a slight angle because of how the axle is designed. the adjusters still go on so that's a plus....if i ever use them.
