I see the 2nd generation discussion area has a Fuel Economy topic so I decided to add one for our third generation Yaris.
On two tankfuls I got 43.05 and 43.15 on a 2012 5 speed manual Yaris L.
This was using non-oxygenated fuel, as I live in the Colorado front range, but am in a county that does not require oxygenated fuel (extra ethanol).
Oxygenated fuel in use in the Denver metro area from October 15 to March 15 gives you about 10% poorer mileagethis is based on my experience on my 2000 Eldorado. .
You're getting great FE. Do you drive a lot of high way?
I drive about half city and half highway. I filled up today at 201 mi @ 6.8 gals = 29.55 MPG
My Brother filled up today for the first time, but he does a lot of city and local driving. He drove 176 mi and filled 6.9 gals to full. So 25.50 MPG.
We're from the chicago burbs. We have a lot of additives in our gas. I believe we have our winter blend already. I want to see how much MPG we over the progression of time, but I can't wait to see what we get in the summer time with the summer blend.

90% highway driving, but up and down mountains from 8800 ft to 5700 ft and back to 8800.

i used to get most tanks of 42+ with my manual 07 yaris, so i expect the new yaris, rated even higher at 30/38 should have no trouble being in the low to mid 40's on mostly highway/light suburban type driving.

can you guys verify how close the computer average mpg is to the actual mpg (miles driven divided by gallons used)?
thanks.

90% highway driving, but up and down mountains from 8800 ft to 5700 ft and back to 8800.
I knew some coasting was going on. Great work. More proof EPA numbers are just lab numbers. Real-world, 40MPG is easily doable with the 5-speed Yaris. One more checkbox checked in the little car's favor. If they were in my area in serious numbers already (and I could take advantage of the college grad $1000 rebate right now), I'd have picked one up already! I need no more convincing about this baby!
can you guys verify how close the computer average mpg is to the actual mpg (miles driven divided by gallons used)?
thanks. Read my mind. Inquiring minds want to know!
It was about 1-2 MPG off for me and my brother. Its close enough for me. I'll do a reset next time I fill up before work. I'll go back after work and refill up and we'll get a closer estimate of accuracy.

it wont be a very accurate comparison unless its done on a full tank of use.

Coasting gives you poorer mileage, compared to just letting off the throttle. The computer shuts the fuel flow off when throttle is zero, whereas coasting makes it think you are idling, thus burning a small amount of fuel.

i would assume colorado uses winter formulated gas starting in october just as most states do. along with the cooler, denser air, those are good numbers.
id guess you will be up around 44-46 mpg's in the spring when the air warms up and the regular gas blend is back in use.

I have an 09 sedan 5spd and at nearly 100% hwy averaging near the speed limit (70mph) I got 458miles on just over 10.5gallons. That's roughly 43.6mpg. No coasting. Again, cruising at near the speed limit the whole way with absolutely no attempt at fuel efficiency.
That being said over 40mpg should be easily achieved

Theoretically I live in a county that does not participate in the Denver Clean Air program that mandates the use of extra oxygenated fuels, but due to the fact our gas stations are serviced from the Denver refineries I may be getting the "winter fuel". The only way to find out for sure is see what mileage I get in May 2012.

Two fill ups ago I had the first oil change and had them put synthetic 0-20 in my 2012 Yaris 5 speed. Since then on the past two tankfuls I got 43.4 and 43.2 MPG.
In addition to synthetic oil I run 40 lbs (at 32 degrees) of pressure in the tires.

My car broke in at around 1600. My car is a 2012 5 door LE Auto
At first I was getting 29.5 MPG, but now I am getting 38 MPG just inflating my tires to 45 PSI all around. The max PSI on my tires are 51 PSI; I don't believe in over inflating for hypermiling.
Safety above all :D.
I am just glad that I am getting over EPA estimated.
I am going to switch to synthetic when I hit 5000 miles, so hopefully I will be getting better MPG.

I have been storing my records on the EPA system known as www.FuelEconomy.gov. Since I bought it 6000 miles ago it has averaged 42.6 MPG. If one does a search for "Find A Car" off the home page, and then select 2012 Toyota Yaris and select how details you will get to this page which is updated weekly, and I update my records at every fill up.

Then this is the EXACT oil I will use when I change it. Question: I have 492 miles thus far. I know that building engines is a lot "cleaner" these days, with fewer microscopic metal particles bouncing around and all...but when do I change my oil to not only get rid of most of these little eroding particles, but also switch to synthetic?
Yes. I have done the "search", read the threads, and my manual. I value YOUR opinion, Hershey. That is why I am asking you.
I am averaging 28.8 mpg, mostly city, very little (15% highway). Last fill-up was 34.8mpg combined, only 492 on the odo as of last night.
Also: anyone see these ga$ price$ climbing? I bought my Yaris just before the sh!t is gonna hit the fan (again, like in 2008), with the "market adjustment" (READ: gouging) fee on economy cars from the dealers of $1-2k over sticker because it doesn't get 15mpg (like back in '08, Priuii were going $3k OVER sticker where I live--and people were paying it!!!)
If you are gonna buy a Yaris--do it now before Armageddon! :eyebulge:

Minnesota will be going to 20% ethanol fuel on August 31, 2013. My mileage is also about 10% lower than with non-oxygenated gas. I expect to loose another 10% when the new fuel hits the pumps. Right now non-oxygenated gas is about 25-35 cents per gallon higher than 10% ethanol. If the mileage loss is as high as 20%, it will be cheaper to buy the non-ethanol given the better mileage.

I'm only at 500mi so I haven't broken the engine in yet. AND I have an A/T that sucks up fuel. Been low revving too, never over 4k rpm. We'll see. Seems like everyone is suggesting that I change my oil to synthetic after about 1200-1500mi instead of the factory 5000mi.
The thing is, I have that Toyota Care program where I get free maintenance for 2yrs or 25k mi. So, if I change to synthetic at 1200-1500mi, would I void this program?

i do more highway driving but i noticed i've been kinda hitting hard like yesterday i went from 30 mpg to 28 mpg because on the highway i'm very aggressive 4000 to 5000 to 6000 rpms because chicago drivers are nuts. for me i feel like with my a/t when i drive city limits 25-45 speed limits and using cruise control i save more gas. and ur question to use a different oil is a good question. I got the extended warranty so i got free oil changes for the next 6 years. I'm just gonna change the oil every 5000 miles like they say we should.

I share similar mileage, and it is disappointing.
I just passed 1,000 miles today, and will wait until 1,500 to change the oil and filter to pure synthetic. I honestly think the break-in oil is very thick, and wearing on what would otherwise be (as everyone else seems to be getting or nearly getting 40mpg highway) getting great mileage.
I think with a thinner oil in there after break-in, we will be in a better place, MPG-wise.

I have just 860 miles on my new Yaris. On the highway at steady 70-75 mph (no AC) with cruise, I am getting 36-37MPG. When I get off the hwy in semi-rural Massachusetts and travel in the 30-50 mph range in 4th or 5th, mileage increase to 38-40mpg. Engine is already starting to "feel" freer and drivability has improved (or at least my driving!). I average 37.6mpg on my first full tank and 37.4 on my second.

Oxygenated fuel in use in the Denver metro area from October 15 to March 15 gives you about 10% poorer mileagethis is based on my experience on my 2000 Eldorado. .
Last July I drove through Colorado and got some fantastic mileage...in my new Sienna minivan. The car is rated at 24 MPG and I was getting 29 MPG. I thought it has something to so with the hills and being able to coast down massive hills and take advantage of DFCO. But maybe it was the fuel, or a combination of both.

There is no reason why you can't achieve at least 40 MPG highway. 90% of my driving is highway and I am getting 44 MPG. Its a standard shift, and I run 40 PSI in the tires, and synthetic 5W20 dealer installed Quaker State oil. I also have 11K miles on it.

Then, I will switch to synthetic. We'll see if it brings a change. I also don't shift beyond 5k RPM. I don't exactly flog my car...I think it's all the damned ethanol. Plus I do 60/40 city/highway driving as well.
the city driving kills the gas mileage. But getting better gas mileage is about practicing softer driving. Softer on the gas, softer on the brakes, softer on the wallet.
Hey that sounds pretty cool.

After 1400 miles, I find that I am averaging between 37-38 mpg in my 1.5L 2012 Yaris SE with manual transmission. I get less (35-36.5 mpg) on the highway at 70 mph/3000 rpm. However, in my daily 20 mile round trip commute and around town driving in semi-rural Massachusetts at 30-50 mph, I get 38-42 mpg. This is all about double what I got in my 2005 GMC Canyon that the Yaris replaces. I am not doing anything to "hyper-mile" drive or tune the car, nor will I. I am very happy with this result.

I'm getting right on 38 mpg for an average, but I was getting 40+ in the 2002 Echo that this car replaced, in exactly the same driving. So that's a little disappointing, but this car is so much more fun to drive it's worth the extra pennies for gas. :)
I find that if I go over 65 anywhere, the mileage drops down noticeably, but the flip side is that if I just flog it for the whole tank, I still get 35, so there's only so much that a 1.5L engine can guzzle.
Like others have mentioned, I am hoping that when the winter gas is gone (should be happening very soon in my area) it will bounce up to about 40 like my old car. My driving is about 2/3 highway, 1/3 suburban, with just a little stop-and-go commuting sprinkled in.

Winter gas is only supposed to be in use from 9/15 to 4/15 according to EPA documents. So our mileage should be going up in a week or so.

Oxygenated fuel in use in the Denver metro area from October 15 to March 15 gives you about 10% poorer mileagethis is based on my experience on my 2000 Eldorado. .
Lol, man how are you getting so much High MPG? i have a 2010 Yaris i don't even think i get that high MPG i live in Colorado to as well in the Thornton area have any tips?

Yesterday I drove about 40 miles: 30 percent country roads at 55 and 70 percent on 4 lane highway at just under 60. Before I left home I reset my factory fuel gauge. I drove with an extremely light foot. I was pleasantly astounded when I checked my MPG gauge just before I exited the highway to discover that it had recorded 46 MPG.

40 PSI at 42 degrees Farenheit at 7756 ft above sea level in all tires, buy gas (85 octane) at Loaf n Jug Bailey, use Toyota installed synthetic oil. Drive 90% highway 10% city.
Regarding the 40 PSI the 2012 15" tires have a maximum cold inflation capacity of 44 PSI, so 40 PSI wont hurt anything.

read as "90% highway 10%city."
Also note Toyota uses different tire manufacturers for some reason. There were at least 3 different stock tires on 06 to 11 Yaris, wouldn't be surprised if that was still the same. They all have different recommendations and abilities.

Hows the peep with a 3 cylinder 1.0 litre engine? It's been a while since I've been in Germany but $2.00 a litre doesn't surprise me. 5.2l/100kms isn't bad at all for a gas engine.

I agree, the consumption is okay, in terms of peep (performance ?) it's okay when driving alone, considering to buy a 1.33 though to get slightly better performance uphill and on the motorway. You need to revv it a lot, in return the 3 Cyl sound is quite nice in my view.
BTW the fuel economy on a Yaris D4D should be an amazing 60 mpg or so.

Years ago when I worked at the Honda dealer and we had the Insights first roll out I had one customer who drove the car new for a year, and after about 10 months he showed up for a regular service and has a custom tag on his car, "101 MPG" I jumped at the chance to ask him what and how in the world, he said you know you don't have to be in a race to get everywhere.
It was his best average for a trip, but he just cruised on the highway and drove the car like there was an egg under the gas pedal, lol...

How much does driving down mountains help to increase the mileage? I drove last year across Colorado in my 2011 Toyota Van and got fantastic mileage. Most of it from coasting down large mountains at 90 MPH.

Hi Guys,
I have had my 2012 Yaris 1.5L 5 door Automatic for around 1 month now and after reading the fuel millage that people are getting my numbers aren't getting close.
Here is a link to my fuelly. I have recorded every single fill up since getting it do I only don't know the cost of the dealership's tank they put in for me
http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rison/yaris
As you can see on fuelly it has all been 95ULP with no ethanol except for 2 which one was 98ULP and the other was 91 with ethanol (the latest one).
The car has done around 3300km's does these numbers seem normal? I am driving about about 20% city driving and 80% Highway.
I am not sure if it is just because of the difference in fuel types cause of been in Australia.
I have had the free service at around 1,000km that the dealer does other then that I have not done anything.
Cheers,
Matt

My lower ones (Around 6.7L/100km) has been when I did a long trip on the freeway but the rest of them have been about 20% city and 80% freeway. I can't seem to get below 7.1 which is my average. I travel 1,000km's atleast a week for work so I am going to try using a few different fuels and see how it goes. I update my fuelly page about 2-3 times a week so feel free to keep checking it.
I am wondering if changing the oil will help? I am not sure if it is the same in Australia or not but people seem to be getting better mileage after changing the oil?
If I can get a constant 6.2-6.5L/100km I will be very happy. But I am really enjoying the car anyway and it is better then my previous car.

I think mine is up there mostly with the tire inflation... mild hypermiling... and that my avg speed on my commute is low 40mph and my high speed is usually only 60 mph....
The 2012 has an mpg monitor setting after the trip meter... I notice that at interstate speeds above 70 mph its hard to get those good numbers... and when i am going through one stretch that is 45 mph my numbers go way up!!!
Are your aussie gal's imperial? I am not sure of the conversion factor... and what engine do you have in your cars???
I am wondering about this tank as I have been utilizing the CC I installed (Thanks CT Scott) as much as possible and my meter which has been a lil low has me averaging over 43 mpg... Tomorrow may be the day, but then I may try to see just how many miles i can sqeeeze out of her 11.1 gal tank..... (has me thinking i wish i would have tried to squeeze a lil extra in there... How kewl would 500 mi tank be...)

As discussed by several people on one of the 'how long does each gas tank bar last on the Yaris' threads, the first bar lasts the longest (if you fill ALL THE WAY to THE TOP) because the tank stops registering at 11.1 gallons. I ran out of gas while pulling into a station (to get gas) in California. I filled that tank all the way to the top and it took 12.777 gallons. I regularly get within .25 or .20 gallons of that. Why? once wrote that at least part of the reason for that is that the bladder in my gas tank behaves differently being primarily in a Humid Subtropical climate. A 46.7 MPG rate in my car would take me 596.68 miles before running out.

Achieved nice mpg with my last tank. 52. Need to admit how I was able to achieve it: It was a pure highway (Autobahn trip) at typical truck speed. Limited to 90 km/h in Germany.
Just been curious how low I could get, not ideal for daily driving :-)
