The dealership I asked to order my hatchback called me to tell me the car came in, he got all the options I wanted except for a big big factor... they got an auto. Even though I wrote it down about 10 times that I wanted a black 5 speed and nothing more. I test drove it anyways and I love the car but the auto is so numb to me. I need a 5 speed.
ugh dumbasses

I'm so I glad I seem to have the only competent Toyota dealer in the US. ;)
But really, that sucks man.

That's kinda like your friend telling you he's set you up for a date with a super-model .......... only it turns out to be a MALE super-model!!!!!!!! I know historically both hatchbacks and manual transmissions are not big sellers in the U.S.A., but you'd think Toyota would see that "times are a changin'". (apologies to Bob Dylan.
At least you know it will be worth the wait. Did they give you any idea of how long???

Did u take any pics of the Auto ? :)
Yeah, the SE Toyota inventory shows 68 Hatch's with Auto, 12 with 5 speeds. I finally settled on the Auto because my wife insisted on the power package. If I wanted a 5 speed Hatch with the power package it was coming from Japan (hopefully 2 months :( ). Bottomline, I bought the car as a commuter so the settled for the auto because of all the stop and go traffic here. Figured with 100 horses to work with the 5 speed was not gonna give me that much more "go" anyway. So far I am happy with the auto, just kinda wanted the extra 1 MPG, and longetivity the manual trans would give.

It hurts to hear that you got an AT!
I hope mine doesn't end up like that.... it came factory direct from Japan, so I better not have waited just get receive an AT.

Sounds familiar... my dealer did the same thing. Now I'm worried that the ordering system may be set up to only take automatic tranny orders(!)
Here's my post on the subject; you're not alone...

That sucks dude,I would not pay for it, I would tell them to get me the car I ordered or else! Even though I prefer the auto when my order comes if it were a 5 speed I would not pay for it, I couldn't even drive it, I would send back to japan :)
Hope they get your car right, if not I would make them take off the price of and pay for the price of the manuel and not the auto, the 5 speeds are cheaper. After all you did order it that way,not your fault they are too dam stupid to fix it for you the right way!
Take care and happy Yaris hunting!

That is pitiful. My dealership finally got my car, and get ready for a short shifter kit, I swear that school busses have shorter shifts then the Yaris.

ooh, that sucks man. so close...hopefully the wait isnt too much longer
It sucks that they screw it up. However, is it really that bad? I mean, I have tried both and kinda liked the AT. It's much smoother than other small car I have tried.

There's no way in hell I would go with an AT in a car this small/low-powered. You need to squeeze every ounce of performance possible out of these things for them to be any fun.

I also thought the Auto was pretty good - not nearly as slow as I thought it would be. Despite this, I'm with Idjiit; no auto for me.

I fully agree with both Idjiit and Goose. I've driven both, and while the automatic is not bad, the 5-speed (especially with the lowering springs) turns the Yaris from an econo-box to a sporty econo-box. I guess it depends on what you want. Some of us want more for our money than just a people mover. We want a car that no matter how small, and under-powered, is still fun to drive.
