If using synthetic oil, you can get by with changing the filter, leaving the oil, and topping it off with fresh synthetic oil. Do this only with real synthetics though. (Amsoil). Amsoil makes a bypass oil filter system that cuts oil changes down to 1 oil change per every 100,000 miles. Not a misprint. The bypass filter filters down to 1 micron, it's like getting an oil change every 3 minutes at 60 MPH. Normal oil filters filter down to 15 microns. Pretty cool system, but it takes room under the hood, so it may or may not work in the Yaris. Costs about $200.00+. Ouch!

Holy crap! Thats quite a filter!
I've heard you change your filter every other time you change the oil. But on my old car, I changed the filter with every oil change... and never had any engine problems. I'm running synthetic oil now in the Yaris, and plan on changing oil and filter once a year, which is approx. every 12,000 miles.

no matter how often you change the filter, never use FRAM!! might as well place old pantyhose there, works just as well.

Oil + Filter for this car on the cheap side is under 15 bucks total. Replace the filter.
