Has anyone ever installed headlight leveling motor to their normal headlight?

Seems like a lot of work and expense to adjust a mechanism that usually only needs to be adjusted once in the lifetime of the car.
If your lights are a bit out of alignment its not hard to turn the two adjusting screws..

The JDM Yaris headlights on certain packages have auto leveling headlights.
I also dont think anyone has done this yet because....we might need the ECU for this? Maybe CTScott can chime in.
I know some Toyota cars have manual adjusting headlights..the car i rented out when i was in Japan had it. Very similar knob to the cluster illumination knob/wheel.

I had the manual level adjustments in my 2000 Celica GT-S with the OEM HID package. I have the motors on my test bench, and the circuit to make them work is very simple. Basically an adjustable resistor (potentiometer) and some other parts. After taking our OEM headlights apart, I noticed the OEM Toyota motors would fit very easily.
But why didn't I do it? Sure, it would be cool to have. But I don't change what I load much, so it would have just been a waste. But I can tell you, it is possible.

we would need to get the Vitz motors. How big are the motors of tge Celica? and possible room to fit in ours?

Mine (IMHO all EU market Yarii) has manual headlight adjustment. You can see part of the switch here in this pic (http://www.lyonssystemsserver.com/breakerpro/1038/1038-230411-130434-491-010-PTIMG.jpg). I believe you guys have the instument panel illumination switch there (which we don't get).

I think he means the switch to the right edge of the picture.

My ST1300 motorcycle has motorized headlite up and down.
I never use it.
I did have to adjust it with the screw provided.
Yes it has a screw adjuster even though its motorized. For some dumb reason the travel used by the motor doesnt cover the entire range...

What are you guys doing to get your headlights out of adjustment so often that electric motors are being considered to keep them in alignment?.
Dont think i've needed to adjust a headlight on any of my cars in 20 years..

This is for height adjustment (leveling) to compensate for the front of the car tilting upwards when the boot is loaded (thus aiming the headlights to the sky and oncoming drivers). The electric motors allow to temporarily lower the light beams so they light the area of the road they're supposed to.

You might want to look at this thread. This guy uses the same motors that I have. Although, he points out that they are tough to find. Although, I've seen similar ones on eBay for different cars.

I looked through those Tacoma forums, and those DIY work looks very clean.
And i didnt know the Sienna XLE had the manual controls for the motors.
Thank you for the link.
So whos up for this project?

In Europe height adjusting headlights are mandatory for all cars. To get a European set of lights to work on a NA market car you would need the lights with the motors and the interior switch along with wiring to control them. You would have to modify at least some of the to the wiring to the lights as i really doubt it's prewired in the car.

My headlights have those, but I didnt connect them when the OEM HID swap was done.
its like the dimmer for the lights on your dash.
the motor is where the up/down adjustment is. no clue about the wiring. I cant imagine it being complicated. (up, down, +, -[shared?]) or (+up, -, +down, then interior with the same with extra pin for illumination)

edit: 84152-52080 is the leveling adjustment in the interior. It goes right next to the side mirror adjustment switch.

I've always wondered what the blank space next to the side mirror adjustment was ! Even on the latest generation Yaris, the blank space is still there. Now I know something about the Yaris my dealership doesn't :p

I don't think it's for actual alignment, but rather have different alignment settings depending on driving situations much like how BMW headlights works.
Our Smart had this adjustment via a switch on the dashboard even though they were just halogen lamps.

The design rules here in Australia state that any vehicle with HID headlights must have automatic self levelling of the lights, and they must be fitted with washers on the lenses. Retrofitting is not allowed unless the vehicle was originally available with HID lights.
The given reason is to prevent glare from poorly adjusted lights blinding oncoming drivers.

My Vitz has built in wired motors behind the headlight and loose plug beside mirror adjustment switch. When i connect a headlight level switch to the plug, it doesn't work. I wish i had the EWD for JDM Vitz.
