Can anyone please confirm that Yaris CAN interface (CAN Bus) complies to SAE J1939 data protocol. Could not find any information to confirm this.

Low level wise is could be considered J1939 compliant, but it is officially J1987 compliant, uses the SAE J1962 terminal arrangement and high level packet wise is ISO 15765-4 compliant.

The reason I am asking is I like to install a temperature gauge in my Yaris.

Hooking up a scan tool to a DLC terminal and seeing engine temperature gave me an idea that I may use a temperature gauge compliant with CAN bus signal.

This way I can avoid inserting a temperature sensor in the radiator hose modification or fittings in the engine block and avoid running wiring from the engine compartment. Since I could just tap into DLC terminal wiring or instrument cluster wiring as signal wiring is available in both.

I guess I will send the manufacturer an email and see what they say about SAE J1987 protocol. Specifications state it is compatible with SAE J1939 data protocol.

Here is a link to the gauge I am considering as it has a nice large sweep. I could go with digital gauge but analog grabs ones eye attention faster.

I don't believe that gauge will work, as the SAE J1939 compliance is at the low level. The communication that allows a device to read PIDs, like the water temp fall under the high level ISO 15765-4 protocol.

Too bad, maybe one day everybody will get synchronized and use something like NMEA2000. I sent them an email already, to inquire if their gauge would work with SAE J1987 data protocol, now I am skeptical. Back to the drawing board. :frown:

If you've got an android phone you can get a bluetooth OBDII reader off ebay and download an app called "Torque" which shows all the readouts as well

Thank you all for the input. Ordered ScanGuage II from eBay, coming from Canada so no worries about duty. ($159.95 incl. shipping)

With ELM-327, an Android device and Torque you get a scan tool for about 30$. Torque can do many things including logging. One of the options is to log to their website, so can login and view your data in the map. Or import into Google Earth.

You were right CTScott. Just received email from the manufacturer. The gauges I was considering will not work with SAE J1962 data.

I will be happier with ScanGauge II anyway.
