View Full Version : How do you utilize the extra glove compartment?

Unique for our car, is the glove compartment behind the steering wheel. As we already have two others, why did Toyota feel obligated to install one of these? What do you keep in your drivers side glove compartment? Anyone get creative with this space?

When i finally graduate and start traveling on the weekends with my future wife, i plan to put a gps up in there. Im thinking one that can retract and cutting out the center of it and making it removable. Then i can just pop off the middle, push a button and raise up my gps and have it right in front of me but not an obstruction. Then cover him up at nice and no one will notice. giong to be nice, but still a while to go before i get to that point.

for now though, i just keep trash that i see on the floor in it, that way it keeps my car looking clean.

Yep, liftback specific. The top cup-holder is also liftback specific and makes for a great holding area for the blackberry since the screen is nicely exposed.

Driver side is my most used glove-box. Maui Gim Glasses, portable nav (when it's unplugged), coins, blackberry (when it's not in use). Also ideally located for using 'speaker phone' mode on the cell. Just pop up the glove box and talk into it, it does a great job a isolating the voice from the rest of the car (it helps that that the motorolla v525 has a good speaker phone built-in)

It be cool if Toyota Put-in a smooth glassy service on the dash so that the suction cup device can be mounted directly on the dash, instead of the windows. (e.g. portable nav).

Its only on the liftback to my knowledge. There's one right infront of the driver behind the steering wheel which imo is a good use of space because obviously the guage clauster isn't there. The sedan has some glove compartments but not as much as the liftback.

Gas reciepts, state parks pass, insurance card, shift light cover, hospital ID in the driver box, bandana, boonie cap in the upper passenger, tire pressure guage, leatherman, flashlight, pen, hill country map in the lower passenger. 10x better than having only one large glovebox.

I love having 3 glove boxes, and all of the different compartments in the hatchback...

In the bottom passenger glove box I keep the yaris manual and insurance papers. In the glove box above that I keep a box of tissues and moisturiser.

On the driver side glove box, I keep the aux cord for my iPod, when its not connected to the stereo.

Kilo of black tar heroin... but seriously, this car would be great for small time drug mules and those that drink and drive. I made some joke to the dealer about that and I thought that for a second he wasn't going to sell me the car for offending his sensibilities. I find it a constant struggle to keep enough crap in all the possible places.

I don't have my Yaris LB yet but my plan for the driver side glove box is to flush mount an ipod universal dock in it and then run the dock cable through the back of the glove box and into a new head unit. That way the cabling is all behind the dash.

What I really want is a way to mod the glove box lid so that it will have a smoke tinted sliding plastic window.

Regarding the glove compartment on driver's side. The spring component was not available for my vitz and so glove compartment did not lock up as it should. I managed to get one from my dealer. I have tried all kinds of positions for this spring to be in its place correctly but I never managed. Has someone already replaced/changed/inserted the spring and might help me by providing some guidance/technique on how this should be applied? If photos are provided it will be highly appreciated.

Hey I want all those places to store stuff... I had to buy a sedan for my son, but wouldn't you think in a car "set up" for a little family they would give you more places to store stuff? From the second I sat in the car the first time I was wondering if I should just put a notebook and pen on the dash in front of me... It feels like a desk so why not make it one? Then I was trying to figure out why they didn't make it storage to the point I looked under the dash to see if it was all cluttered with computers and it wasn't... Didn't know untill I came across this thread in the hatches the same area is used as gloveboxes... bummer.... wonder if the dashes are interchangable?? Be a pain and costly but wonder if able to be done?

I put my gps there, very convenient, don't even need a mount to use it, and i just close it when i park so no thief would walk by and break my windows to steal it. Much more convenient than popping it off of its mount and placing it in my glovebox every time. Plus its illegal where i come from to mount it on the center windshield.

keep sunglasses , cds , gas mileage log book , and computer screen cloth in them . The cloth works great for wiping dust from dash and interior of car thanks to the fibers and static . Line the upper compartment(s) with the white spongy rubber lining used for kitchen drawers . Keeps sun glasses and other items from sliding around in it .

A few judicious holes in the box allows the UG plug to remain hidden and a similar hole (cut with a Dremel) creates a tight enough fit for the GPS mounting bracket to slide in, hold the GPS at the proper angle and still allow the glove box to close (it is close). The GPS mount hole was cut just into the curved part of the "lip" of the glove box. There is "stuff" under the glove box but it was easy to avoid the important things. My GPS is a Garmin 855 with voice command ($119 ebay) , the voice command works very well and in turn you do not have to reach through or around the wheel to enter addresses etc.

The set up works well, keeps the GPS hidden when not is use, just open the glove box when driving, does not interfere with airbags or obstruct the view in any way.

I just added some LED's to mine...trying to find something(besides the chips) in those compartments at night on the road was a PITA. I'm pleased with the results, they are very bright.

Man, you carry a big bible...mine fits in the little drop down compartment to the left of the steering wheel.

There's a glovebox behind the steering wheel!??

I didn't notice it until halfway back from Michigan, where I bought it. I am still in the habit though of using the two on the passenger side, too many years of having rigs with that setup! I think I have some spare change and a few bills there, there are so many other spaces I forget, and don't really need, that one, I like having it however.

Right now I have my ScanGauge AND my Sirius dock velcro to the dash, thanks to this site they will both be going in the upper compartment. I can't believe I didn't think of that myself!

Inspired by PYM's setup, I just finished mounting my Ultra-Gauge and Garmin Nuvi 250 in my drivers side glove box on a small rectangle of bent plexiglass.

At the proper angle and with the GPS on the left side (to avoid the hinge) I am able to close the lid without modification, I simply chased the wires out the front along the the steering wheel column and behind the drop panel where my key less entry module is located. Out of sight with the lid closed.

I don't use the GPS that much so when not in use I simply coil the wire up behind the Plexiglass mount.

As a side note for anybody wanting to mount anything here, I used Scotch All Weather Fasteners, applied to the plexi and the units.

These are not Velcro/hook and loop, they are in fact hook and hook and really "lock" the units to the mount. There is no "play" whatsoever like one would usually get with standard Velcro.

Cheers

Mine contains a window rag, some chewing gum, $1.75 in change and a 2-quart bag of sheetrock screws and roofing nails just in case I get in a high-speed chase with the cops. (I know, it's futile but it's sure tempting sometimes)

that's where I keep my pot.....no seriously, it is.

I put in a tach a while back and it is retartedly bright. I put in a potentiometer and I keep it in the dash so that I could adjust it if I wanted to. I need to buy a fancy little black knob for it now though.

I moved my Sirius docking station to in there after reading this thread, it is a perfect use for it with room to spare. Plus the display is easier to read being in the shade. Thanks for the idea!

I put an iPod mount I had from ProFit Intl., just 3M taped it to the bottom and I keep my iPod there when its not being used and I plan on keeping it there when I get the interface. Plus I put my house keys there when I'm at work.

I keep my GPS (when not in use) the face for my head unit in it's case, and sometimes my iPod Touch. I also have a Dash Mat that completely hides the behind the wheel glove box so I figure my dead unit face is probably mostly safe in there. Will post pics when I can.

I keep coins for parking meters in it. The 2nd generation Yaris hatchback is unique in having this driver's side glove compartment. It makes up for the center gauges. too bad the 3rd generation Yaris will not have this glove box.

I dunno if this was said before but the most enjoyable way I "utilize" my driver's side glove box is to gloat in front of my non-Yaris owning friends. I like to show them the glove box behind the wheel (and the top box on the passenger's side) and hear them say, "wow, that's so cool!"

But mainly, I stick napkins in there for easy reach/access and gas station receipts.

Any chance you have some pics of that installation? What did you use to
mount the control head inside? What kind of antenna are you using?

The way some people are replying i'm starting to think maybe we arent talking about the small compartment under the drink holder at the left knee location, have i missed a functional glove box in my 08 sedan on the dash where the instruments usually reside on most cars? if so how do you open it..
Any pics of the glove box in question?
This is basically what i'm looking at,i dont see a drivers side glove box..Yeah i know the pic is of a hatch.

Only the LB has it.
You see that notch behind the headlight switch, right next to the cup holder? That is the extra glove box.

why?

yes the sedan owners get screwed. No glove box behind the steering wheel or above the regular glove box. What gives?

Sorry I don't have any pics but I can answer your questions. I used sticky on one side Velcro to attach the control head in the glove compartment on the drivers side (right in front of the driver). I am using a Larsen 2/70 amateur antenna with I believe a Diamond mount mounted lowdown on the liftback area.

Thanks for the info edmscan!
I've been using a 5W HT with a mag mount, and recently installed a lip mount
on the back hatch as well....probably the same as yours. I'm looking at installing
a 2820H head inside the glovebox similar to yours. The 2820H has magnets on the
back for mounting. If and when I get that installed, I'll send you a pic. I know the
purists want us to drill a hole for an NMO mount, but I wasn't ready for that yet.

In the UPPER DRIVER SIDE glovebox I keep coins, paper clips, a tire pressure gauge, a compass, a sunglasses case (with the sunglasses in them at night or if it is a cloudy day), pens, registration receipt (to show to out of state law enforcement -- in Texas the actual registration = a front window sticker), proof of insurance, over the counter throat/cough drops. In the LOWER DRIVER SIDE glovebox (see post #66 on this thread with picture -- he calls it his money compartment) I keep a 12v splitter (has a 12v male end that splits off to two 12v female-- so a passenger can bring along a cell/smartphone car charger and use it). In the UPPER PASSENGER SIDE glovebox I keep a 12v car charger for my netbook, over the counter throat/cough drops, a small first aid kit, a pocket US Constitution, a Motel 6 Directory, napkins (the restaurant/kitchen kind), and folded plastic (empty) Wal-Mart bags (for Trash and for when I dog sit my favorite dog and walk him). In the LOWER PASSENGER SIDE glovebox I keep a Lumix camera and proprietary battery charger, 3 CDs in their respective jewel cases, a book (1,001 Ways To Save The Earth--given to me by my little cousin who was the inspiration behind my Yarisworld screen name), a Logitech Trackball Mouse, and a 'hang anything from your rear view mirror' type strap from the gift shop at Elvis' Birthplace in Tupelo, Mississippi. I am currently shopping for a small (but rated 100 watts plus continuous) 12v to AC power inverter that will fit (when not in use) in the LOWER PASSENGER SIDE glovebox. I'll use this to charge my Macbook Pro. I keep the contents of a normal wallet in a neoprene sunglasses case (sold for use when fishing) that is connected to my keychain and the end of that case fits (when the car key is in the ignition) in the DRIVER SIDE CUBBYHOLE so that it doesn't dangle and hit my leg while I'm driving. In the PASSENGER SIDE CUBBYHOLE I have seashells from a recent trip to the beach at Captiva Island in Florida. I also have a belt clip case mounted on the lip (near the seashells) that contains my AT&T Fusion with a rubber band that straps my Nokia E5 in its case to it. I don't have a SIM card in the E5 and use it mostly for the map program (all onboard that allows for navigation without any data/cellular connection that will run up charges). I have a 12v splitter in use (apart from the one stored in the LOWER DRIVER SIDE glovebox) and have a male 12v (plugged into each of the two female 12v connections) with dual USB ports in each. I have two extra retractable USB cables (fully extended) connecting the Fusion and the E5 to one set of the side-by-side USB ports, and I tuck the slack from the cords into the PASSENGER SIDE CUBBYHOLE around the seashells. I have two prepaid lines, one with Verizon and one with AT&T. I don't use them much, but when I do I'll use them for hours at a time) each with an old Motorola V3. I love the size and Durability of the V3, but the battery life is horrible so I decided to get the Fusion to compliment the V3 and re some of its individual merits. I have Rocketfish USB cables that I have long used with the V3s in the car (for some reason if I TRY to use ANY OTHER USB CABLE IN THE CAR I get an 'unauthorized charger' message) so I have the V3s sitting in the CD cutout behind the parking brake with the Rocketfish cables running from the V3s to the other set of side-by-side dual female USB ports from the other side of the 12v splitter. The service rep at my local Toyota dealer told me that the in dash factory 12v female is connected to a 15 AMP fuse at the fusebox. I think each device is probably pulling under 500 Milliamps, but even worst case scenario it isn't over 2 AMPS so a total of 8 AMPS is still well under 15 AMPS. The Fusion and the E5 are recent purchases. I now know I'll always have a charged phone, unless I somehow run through the full charge in all of them without being able to recharge...but I don't forsee that happening. I remember that another poster to this thread mentioned that she keeps an umbrella in her UPPER DRIVER SIDE glovebox. I can't remember where she lives, but I tried using that size umbrella and it got destroyed by the force of some of the winds we get (even being 70+ miles from the Gulf), so I purchased an adequate umbrella for my use and keep it in the BACKSEAT PASSENGER SIDE CUBBYHOLE. I keep my netbook in a neoprene case under the passenger seat.

....oooops! I forgot one item from the UPPER DRIVER SIDE glovebox.....I also keep a 12' tape measure in there. I keep my 'Starbucks personal cup' in the passenger door cup holder (I normally keep my laptop bag on the passenger seat). I keep a 60 count container of moist hand wipes from Dollar Tree in the Driver door cup holder (much cheaper than the effectively next cheapest 40 count for $1.64 house brand at Wal-Mart). I keep both of the hatch specific in-dash folding cup holders, as well as the one at the back of the console between the front seats, free to accommodate actual beverages.

I just moved my Nokia E5 and AT&T Fusion into the UPPER PASSENGER SIDE glovebox. The spools from the retractable USB cables fit in there too. The part of the cables below the spools exit over the edge of the glovebox. The cables are so thin that they allow the glovebox to close completely. I can now unplug the male 12v adapter (with the aforementioned 2 retractable USB cables plugged into its dual USB female slots) and toss it into the UPPER PASSENGER SIDE glovebox as well when I leave the car and don't want to bring the Fusion and/or the E5 with me.
