View Full Version : What did you drive before your '12 Yaris?

What did you have before the '12 Yaris? Why did you get rid of it? And while we are on the topic...what other automotive toys do you have?

We don't have our Yaris yet. 1 month down and 3 to go until our 5-speed Blazing Blue Pearl SE gets here. It will be my wife's new car.

She currently drives this:
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/PhocusZX3/08051949.jpg

2007 Rabbit. Purchased it new and paid it off last year. Just at 91k on the odometer and it has been a great car. Only modifications are factory GTI springs, GTI skirts, recalibrated steering to GTI spec, and the roof rack. This will be mine once the Yaris gets here. Not sure how much longer I am going to keep it though. I absolutely love the car but two doors is a pain in the ass (and my back) with a child. I'd go for a four door Golf but those only come with an automatic now unless you go TDI or GTI. Leaning towards a WRX or Forester XT if gas prices aren't too crazy.

This is my daily driver:
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e362/PhocusZX3/blackbumpers.jpg

1989 8v Jetta Wolfsburg Edition. Unknown mileage as the odometer stopped working when the prior owner replaced the speedo cable. I purchased it for $500 over a year ago, got it running, and got to work making it a reliable roadworthy car. Once the Yaris gets here I am going to take it off the road, strip it, put it on a rotisserie, and do a complete rebuild.

I traded up from a '94 Geo Metro 3-door...which makes my new Yaris feel like an LS-series Lexus.

Those VWs sure are beautifully styled cars. Yummy.

Went from a 1994 V6 Camry with 314,000 Km on the odometer to our present vehicle. The colour on the Camry was a metallic bronze. There were a few scrapes, scratches and minor dents on the body. My wife wanted a new colour (red) so I told her to go over to the local Toyota dealer to pick out a red paint so we would have a genuine Toyota colour on the Camry.

An hour later she showed up at home with a new red Yaris 4 door sedan and said that this is what she wanted and she was saving me money because the Yaris used a lot less gas than the Camry.

With reasoning like that how could I say no.

I drove a 1992 Honda Civic VX hatchback, with 5-speed manual. I bought it in 1992, with 6000 miles on it (it was a repo). It was a great car, 43 MPG, but I finally couldn't get it to pass the smog test. I sold it to the smog test guy for $1,000, with 196,000 miles on it.

My wish list for a replacement car included: (1) Great gas mileage, (2) manual transmission, (3) no power anything, and (4) as short as, or shorter than, the Civic. My new Yaris is getting just over 40 MPG, which is fine. It has power locks (but not remote locks, which I definitely didn't want), and electric power steering, which I can live with. And it's about 6 inches shorter than the Civic. Overall, after about three weeks with my new Yaris, I really enjoy driving it.

Drove a white Mazda 323 Astina BG (pop-up headlights) until the torque converter gave out on me. Great little car, but previous owners didn't take good care of it. My wife wanted a small, reliable, economic car... So we got the Yaris! :D

What's too bad with the yaris compared to old Civic, it's that we feel like driving a minivan since it's so high. At least the 2012 yaris as adjustable height standard on the driver seat. However, I don't know about the VX steering, but Yaris PS >>> PS on my '99 civic. I even switched the steering pinion for an Integra one (3.2 turns lock to lock instead of 3.6) since it was so terrible.

You have fantastic taste in cars. That is all.

How is the skyline legal in USA? And what's the car on the before last picture?

Some owners transfer the VIN plate from a 300ZX (that they have the title to--as an example) and title the Skyline as such. Most people at the DMV don't give it a glance. Just don't get pulled over, or you are in it (legally) so deep (as this is illegal). If word got out your had a real non-R35 GTR/Skyline (and it would), I can't see anyone being able to keep it on the street. They are illegal cars in the U.S.--and a LOT of people know it.

Same reason I can't import a Kei sports car such as a Suzuki Cappuccino, Honda Beat, or Autozam AZ-1 into the U.S.!

Just heard about a few people trying this a couple of years ago (not saying that is what rub did, but it's a guess). Not even a Skyline is worth all the hassles. But damn, are those R32-R34 coupes all so sexy! Straight-six engines are so hot, too. V6 engines are so pedestrian, by comparison.

But Skylines are dime-a-dozen in Canada ("grey imports" they call them)...as are said Kei sportscars.

BRB, moving to Canada forever.

EDIT: I just noticed you are in Canada, Broody. This is all old hat to you then, isn't it? I am so jealous of your used car availability. Can you send me a Suzuki Cappuccino? I'll even send you the cardboard box first. lol

A couple years ago it was not too hard to get a title for a skyline or cefiro or any other jdm car. Georgia was easy too.Tenn was a cakewalk. Now that the dmv figured things out
It's near impossible. Its actually easier to get a registered machinegun now than it is to title a skyline.

The next to last car in the pic is a infiniti M30. I put a skyline motor in it.RB20det. In japan it's a f31 leopard. I use to drive a vitz when I was in japan alot. 2-3 times a year.
I worked for a importer. So when it came time to buy a new car yaris was it.

no kidding about GA being the EASIEST way to get a title for a JDM car. My good buddy and ex roomie bought a RHD CRX SI. got it shipped from canada. cost about 2k extra more dollars but it was his dream car

It seems risky to own a rhd in USA...
In Canada, we can import them once they are 15 years old, but in Quebec (where I live) since 3 years now (april 2009) it changed to 25 years because too many young people were buying skylines and such and wrecking them. I bought my '92 MR2 rhd in march 2009 so I'm fine, but it's too bad I cannot import anything, I'd like something more exotic like a Suzuki Alto Works awd.
I found a used beat for sale once (legal to drive here), it's a blast to drive but too narrow for me (6ft3).

However, I bought a jdm bike last year (FZR250 1988), since it's not RHD, there are no problems :). Plates for a sub 400cc are 330$, 650$ for 400+ and 900 or so for a sport bike (it was even 1400 until last year). And my fzr is more powerful and fun (18 000rpm redline) than any american 250 (ninja or cbr), perfect beginner's bike to drive around town.

The problem is that I have too many vehicules, but I cannot discard any. My DD is not good for track use, my MR2 (track car mostly) is not good for DD, and my bike is not good for winter and I won't track it (safety reasons). I'd like to find a vehicule that can make both DD and lapping, maybe a Yaris 2012 SE, but it will feel a bit slow compared to the mr2...

Get a clean usdm body for 3k or so and a genIII engine clip for about the same. 6k for such a nice car is honest.

There are many classic to be had, but they cost a fortune in Japan too. The big advantage of 15-20 years old jdm cars is that they are almost given, we pay more for the import cost than for the cas itself.

An affordable car that I would like to own is the Honda City Turbo II, it's more than 25 years old now.

I lost my 1999.5 VW TDi Golf to a deer last Nov and the cost of a new 2012 VW was $31,000 so I headed to the Toyota dealer to get my 2012 Black 3 door Yaris. My '12 replaced an '02 Echo, which I really liked except for the flop-on-its-side-and-die handling it exhibited around most corners.

An extended family member needed a car quickly, so I sold him the Echo, which gave me an excuse to get a new Yaris which I had been very interested in as soon as I saw the new model. After 4 months with the new car, I have no regrets at all. :)

My weekend and ski trip car is an '09 Subaru Outback Sport, which is an enjoyable car in need of stiffer suspension (I may eventually get around to putting a rear sway on it to begin the quest to improve its handling) and which unfortunately guzzles gas, relatively speaking. Which is what relegates it to weekend and fun car.

If I could get a Yaris with the Subaru's power but the Yaris's fuel economy and handling (and definitely the Yaris's shifter and brakes), that might just be the perfect car for me! :-P

I drove an '08 Ford Focus coupe 75k miles prior to the Yaris, and before the Focus I had a 2001 GMC Jimmy which I loathed for it's phantom electrical problems.

I'm happy to be out of the Ford, though it never left me on the side of the road it was leaking oil at 73k and had a squeal (that made it sound like a hoopty) apparently perplexed Ford techs for 45k miles.

Now I have my Yaris, I love it, it feels very minimalist and has a lot of utility.

Your wish list =:clap::clap:. My wish list was the same and the only one I fell short re was car length (pretty close though--outgoing car =149.4 inches and 2007 U.S. Spec 3-Door Yaris I think = 150.5 or 151.5----other countries =some as short as 147 inches--differences re U.S. bumber specs?). My previous car was a 2001 Suzuki Swift that I purchased new on Labor Day Weekend 2001 for almost 20 percent under (yes almost twenty percent under) the factory sticker. I retired it from service on what I thought COULD be it's last trip, depending on conditions (and it was -- unpaved roads in Newfoundland were just too hard on the steering rack -- and I researched the Yaris before I left). I drove it up the coast of California, through Oregon and Washington, and into the Vancouver Metro...then 4 months across Canada from Lion's Bay, BC to Cape Spear,NL (with a 2 day detour into Michigan)... then back into the U.S. after the Atlantic Provinces and soon to Rhode Island for my Yaris. The Blue Book Value was literally zero and with the chewed up steering rack a wholesaler doing other business gave me 50 bucks for it and allowed me to rip out the JL Audio etc stereo including all the high end wiring. I drove 151,000+ miles in the Suzuki Swift in about 61 months.

I just looked up the specs on the Suzuki and it had a 1.3 engine with 79 HP--- with the 5 speed manual and a gear ratio with a 1st gear that felt low AND the low weight, the car didn't feel underpowered. The car could never be built now (at least for the U.S. market). The mindset the car represents (in a good way) is kind of what Bronsin wished the market could go back to offering (in a recent thread he started). The people who replied to him I think correctly pointed out that it wouldn't sell---people wouldn't give up multiple air bags, etc. that exist in 2012 and do contribute to the car costing more.

This may have been mentioned in another thread, but if so I didn't see it....I learned on Wikipedia the second generation Yaris will be sold in Europe as the Daihatsu Charade through the 2013 model year. Toyota owns 51 percent of Daihatsu and has decided that Daihatsu will pull out of the European market at the end of the 2013 model year. The second generation Yaris/Daihatsu Charade will be built in Thailand for the European market----see the link from footnote #24 from the Wikipedia article.

How many miles on the Echo when you sold it? New when you bought it?

Hey man, new here. I've got a '12 Civic SE Taffeta White as well. Why are you wanting to switch into a Yaris? Thanks

I only bought the civic manual b/c it was close to the same price quoted to me by my Toyota Dealer so I took the car with more HP, Class, similar MPG. I am averaging 35 to 36 a gal. with mix highway and local...I am still looking to save more gas without going hybrid.

Why Yaris?

...I live in Queens, NYC...and the civic is slightly a high profile car b/c there are a lot of thugs whom drive Honda's and hunt for Civic and Accord Alloys just to swap or resell in the black market....The Yaris is a lower profile car to me b/c most people in my circle doesn't even know such a car exist...so therefore I would like to drive a Yaris just to Dare-To-Be-Different. I have also owned many older Toyota and Honda cars before and I always felt that Toyota was just a bit more of a solid car but at the cost of the Fun Factor.

It hasnt been really restored (yet). Its more of a 50 footer, original paint is a little rough. What I have done to it myself is replaced the engine, was blown when I got it, upgraded to 3/4 ton 8-lug axles with a shackle flip in the rear for lift, razor grille conversion, larger fuel tank, custom bumpers and rock sliders. Also did some interior mods.

This Wagoneer is a little deceiving because they never made a 4-door SJ with wide track axles and fender flares. This was converted to a wide track when it was new by a dealer out in Cali. Only the J-trucks and some of the 2-dr Cherokee's had the fender flares.

I previously drove a 1999.5 MK4 VW Jetta (one of the very first ones to roll off the assembly line for that model). I loved this car overall, but it eventually developed peculiar electrical gremlins where the windows would not function depending on the phase of the moon, the car alarm would go off in the middle of the night even when not set, the turn signals worked when they felt like it, and numerous plastic pieces decided to break/snap off just for fun. Wheee!

With me requiring an absolutely dependable daily driver, the aforementioned oddities were unacceptable. I have higher hopes for Toyota.

Yeah money was definitely a problem in that truck lol. Wish I could have kept it but Chicago winters have been hit or miss lately. I can do without the 4WD. The narrow tires and traction control should be enough. And just in case, my buddy down the street bought that lifted Taco and I gave him all my recovery gear so I should always have a free tow haha.

BamBam, what happen to the first Yaris? Looks pretty bad.

Kame, know what you mean on gas prices. For me, I need something that can go much further on one tank of gas. Having to stop every 3 or 4 days is killing me.

Should have stuck with another Camry.

I would defend til the cows come home his right to do that (unlike how liberals feel about that (usually)), but I still think his doing that was incredibly wasteful (I guess I can't completely shake off the SF Bay Area Native within me....although I have politically from an economic perspective). Speaking of politically...I've been missing in action for the last week and a half re my foot, so I didn't get a chance to reply to your long reply to multiple people before tk-421 shut down that thread. I wanted to reply to about half of your replies on that post. I don't want tk-421 to get upset and ban me, so I won't compose all of those replies. Hopefully he won't be upset if I just do one of those replies very briefly. You expressed surprise (I can see why given my posts) that I argued (to a member of my family) that Obama was a better choice than HC for the nomination. I hadn't yet read anything he wrote (or supposedly wrote) at that point in 2008 and I was so disillusioned by many aspects of the Bush administration that I wanted to believe what he SAID. Both of us are the only children our parents had together. Both of us were essentially raised by our grandparents (although I was much closer to mine than he apparently was to his). Both of us had similar 4 year periods before college. Both of us started out at small private 4 year colleges for our first 2 years before transferring to larger universities, each 'on the map' globally. I guess I just wanted to believe. At that time I cared quite a bit about how other nations view the U.S. .....now...not so much.

It was a nice SUV in excellent condition, but got to be too much after awhile. It was overkill to drive from point A to point B. When we moved to the country the idea was to get a truck to be able to haul bigger things we found while out junk shopping. Well, 3 Christmas trees, 2 chairs, and 2 curio cabinets later...it served its purpose. Even with the straight 6 the gas mileage sucked. It would be cheaper to have stuff delivered!
My 2013 Yaris is a nice personal space, it is a blast to drive & is basic without all the frills I never used. Air Conditioning, Automatic Transmission & iPod capability is all I need! It is great to stop at gas stations now...for just coffee!
