What are you personally looking to achieve?

Drop: mild, moderate, or slammed
Ride: OEM comfort, bone jarring stiffness, or somewhere in between

You could install new struts if you want, a lot of people left the shock and strut stock. Generally, stock strut/shocks may wear out a little quicker, so keep that in mind. Aftermarket (performance) struts and shocks often add a degree of stiffness.

damper is usually the adjustment of the shock's Hard and Soft settings. Some coilover kits have dampening adjustments.

Just regular coil overs are just a spring that has adjustable hieght by using keys. You are just moving the spring Higher or Lower from the shock housing itself

I run Tanabe NF210 and stock struts on mine. Going to have to replace the struts though, one of the rear ones has given out on me. Ride is comfortable and handling was improved a LOT. It is a bit bumpy on poorly paved roads but I prefer that over a "squishy" feeling car. On the occasion that I drive my mom's Accord I feel like I'm on a boat.

I have springs right now on an 07 sedan and the drop is pretty low for springs (~1.9in).

It is advisable to replace struts only because the new lower stiffer springs may wear out the factory spec struts more quickly. If you replace the stuts and springs together you wont have to go back under the car. But replacing the struts is not required. Lots of us are on springs with stock shocks.

If you can afford coilovers and are trying to go pretty low then I would recommend getting them. They should all be ride height and damper adjustable and they will give the most extreme handling and lowering you can get on any ride.

Or you can do what I did, buy some springs, get used to the feel and the drop and then save your money til you can get some coilovers.

GL and you may want to search. You will find a lot of great info.

Coilovers in the first picture, is just that.. just an example. just spring with an adjustment for hieght.

2nd pic is just a lowering spring.. nothing to adjust, so height is really determined by what the manufacture says and how much weight is in the car. ex, sound sytems... also they do not come with shocks, will have to buy separately as other here are suggesting

3rd pic is basicly what a yaris coilover is. Its usually a kit with adjustable springs and comes with shocks. these are usually more aggressive and stiffer ride, but completely adjustable for that mild look or slammed look
