Visiting Cali: SF, Monterey, Sequoias, Yosemite

What's up West Coast?

We're coming this week to put down 800 miles from San Francisco, down to Monterey/Big Sur, over to the Sequoias, up in Yosemite, and back to SF.

Suggestions for sights and food? We love food.

Anthony Bourdain's show put us up to:

I can suggest a place in Monterey. Sea Harvest Fish Market. I had either the grenadier or the rock fish. Portions are enough to satisfy, not to get absolutely full, but man, tasty!

I believe I got snapper at Nick's Lighthouse in San Fran. It only got 3 out of 5 stars, but the food is good. Restrooms are EXTREMELY cramped tho. They do have tons of restaurants in the general area tho.

As for the other places, I haven't been to Sequoia, so no clue, and I've only been to a retreat in Yosemite, so I can't make any restaurant suggestions.

Make sure you go on the 17-Mile Drive when you're in Monterey.

17 mile is definitely on the list and Carmel is enroute to Big Sur. I don't drink wine but the wife does. Maybe we'll hit Napa for that.

We'll stop by Paso Robles as it's right on the way to the Sequoias

If you are going to be traveling from SF to Monterey, I suggest stopping by in Los Altos, at Muracci 2. If you like Japanese curry, I recommend it. Only 2 in the whole California.
They are open from 11:30-2pm And then open again around 5:30-9p.

They take 2 days to prepare their curry.

When you are on your drive to Monterey/Big Sur, do a quick stop in Castroville, CA for some deep fried artichokes at The Giant Artichoke Restaurant (http://www.yelp.com/biz/giant-artichoke-restaurant-castroville#query:Fried%20Artichokes) or Pezzini Farms (http://www.yelp.com/biz/pezzini-farms-castroville#query:Fried%20Artichokes) I personally love artichokes, probably because I grew up in Castroville lol!...

You can also head on over to Moss Landing, CA near Castroville on Hwy 1 to Phil's Fish Martket (http://www.yelp.com/biz/phils-fish-market-and-eatery-moss-landing#query:Fried%20Artichokes) great place to eat, known for their Seafood Cioppino, its been featured on food network, travel channel etc...

if your taking HWY 152 over to the valley on your way to Yosemite, you can also stop by [Casa De Fruta (http://www.yelp.com/biz/casa-de-fruta-hollister-4) great little stop, to stretch your feet out and check out their shops.

Los Altos sounds good. I'm in for Castroville as well. We're not anywhere near HWY 152 so maybe that'll be another trip.

I won't be able to make the NCVC meet on the 25th either as I'm only staying for a week :T

If you do that, no need for Napa. Paso Robles has a very robust wine industry, and are well known for their late-harvest Zins.

From San Francisco, CA-1 to Carmel/Big Sur/Cambria; CA-46, CA-41, CA-198 to Sequoias; CA-99, CA-41 to Yosemite; CA-145, CA-99, I-205 back to SF .. one big loop

BTW, be sure to familiarize yourself with parking rules when you're in SF.

They are on the prowl 24/7 because the city is broke (so they say) so they try to shake you down every which way and I've seen many cars with the infamous BOOT. :rolleyes:

Checking in. Just dropped $60 for dim sum lunch at Yank Sing @ rincon. Walked to Mee Mee Bakery for some boxes. Yes boxes of cow ear cookies. Add a bag of almond macaroons to go

Ahhh... Yank Sing is ** the best ** but really pricy. Well, there are other places in the heart of Chinatown but I wouldn't be able to explain how to get there. Yeah, parking fines are outrageous :rolleyes: so read the signs carefully.
