Larry Niven or Jerry Pournelle, they got together to write "Lucifer's Hammer". What an amazing look at the End of the World, even though it is a bit dated now, and an interesting introspective on the American Mind...

Many and they do change over the years, but right now it's Richard Russo (who wrote Nobody's Fool, later made into a movie with Paul Newman). He wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning The Empire Falls.

+1 on chuck palahniuk, dude has a writing style like no other...
Also, I'm a huge fan of the Myst games, and the books by Rand and Robyn Miller are fantastic. Huge Edgar Allen Poe fan too.

Sagan? I prefer Velikovsky myself, just as much information without the ego trip...

Edgar Allen Poe is undoubtedly brilliant. But I think as you get older, your taste in literature changes (or is it just me? :P )

right now it is Cory Doctorow:http://www.boingboing.net/http://craphound.com/

Orson Scott Card is awesome too, and Edgar Allan Poe is heroic. So many other science fiction and fantasy stuff though, David Drake, David Weber, Tanya Huff, Anne McCaffrey, and so many others.
